HARDY THOMAS: (1840-1928) English Novelist. A poignant A.L.S., Thomas Hardy, on one side of a correspondence card, Max Gate, Dorchester, 24th December 1912, to [Charles Walter] Moule. Hardy writes, in full, 'Though you request me not to answer your letter I must send you this brief line of sincere thanks for the sympathy you express. Mrs. Hardy's death was quite unexpected by me, & the loss of her leaves a great blank in my life. With best wishes for the New Year, I am always yrs truly'. Matted in cream beneath an image of Hardy in 1913 seated in a three quarter length profile pose at his desk, with a pen in one hand, and framed and glazed in a plain modern black frame to an overall size of 9 x 15.5. One crease to the upper left corner, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG Charles Walter Moule (1834-1921) English Academic, the librarian and president of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.
