AN OTTOMAN SWORD (YATAGHAN), TURKEY, 19TH CENTURY AND A SUDANESE KASKARA, 19TH CENTURY the first with curved single-edged blade cut with an inscription involving a tughra on one face, chased silver hilt extending over the forte and around the back-strap, and a pair of large horn grip-scales rising to form an eared pommel; the second with broad double-edged blade engraved with a stylised city gate at the forte on each face, iron cross-piece and reptile skin grip the first: 60.2 cm; 23 3/4 in blade (2)

2300-2200 BC. A carved black jasper cylinder seal with frieze of a bull and figures; accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: Cylinder Seal of Black Stone, 24 x 16 mm. In the centre of the scene is a walking bull with head down on whose back is the so-called 'winged gate'. On either side is a god on one knee holding either side of the structure on the bull's back. As a terminal there is a star on a rod. This is an Akkadian seal, c.2300-2200 B.C., from Mesopotamia. So far the identify [sic] of the structure on the bull's back is not known. Though worn, this seal is full of interest. 11 grams, 24mm (1"). From a London, UK, collection; acquired 1970s. This lot is part of a single collection of cylinder seals which were examined in the 1980s by Professor Lambert and most are accompanied by his own detailed notes; the collection has recently been reviewed by Dr. Ronald Bonewitz. Fine condition.

3rd-5th century AD. A carved schist frieze fragment depicting a standing kilted guard, bare-chested with right hand resting on the hilt of his scabbarded sword; mounted on a custom-made stand. 4.4 kg, 42.5cm (16 3/4"). From a private UK collection; acquired before 1980. In Hinduism and Buddhism it is common to see a pair of guardian figures to the doorway of a temple. These are known as Dvarapala and the name literally means gate protector. They possibly derive from minor village deities whose primary function was to protect the village from supernatural harm. As formal Hinduism and Buddhism developed and spread they absorbed the local deities and amalgamated them by having them carry out the same functions as protectors. The examples from Gandhara typically show the demi-gods in the clothes of Classical soldiers thus displaying the unique fusion of Greek and Indian culture from the area. Fine condition.
