Scottish History Interest. A bound archive of handwritten correspondence, 1784-1846, comprising letters addressed to and from George Blake, Student at Ross, later residing in Liverpool, between friends and family members, some of the letters appearing to be transcriptions in George's own hand, for example from his mother. To include a letter from James Black, Howick, 3 February 1784, 'Let no Beauty allure you by her charm. Steel your heart to the whole sex. For a young man, rising in the world, to fall in love, to give himself up to soft desires, is to stop short on his very career to glory'; a letter headed New York, 11 January 1846, 'My dear uncle, It is with truly unpleasant feelings that I now address you but through the most unfortunate circumstance I am really obliged to have recourse to solicit your assistance...in this part of the Globe I am indeed reduced to the greatest distress and I am in such a forlorn condition that I am ashamed in letting you know exactly my state. I am now obliged to go to Bellevieu [Bellevue] Hospital & alms house, address James Graham, care of the Gate Keeper, Bellvieu Hospital & alms house, New York'. Some of the authors or names mentioned include David Welsh; Dr Theophilus, Cottage of Peace; Rev. Dr Hunter, Professor of Divinity, Edinburgh [Andrew Hunter of Barjarg], and others. Jackanory, The secret Garden, ill.Paul Birkbeck 1939-2019, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett read by Rosalind Ayers, iconic image of Mary Lennox talking to Ben Weatherstaff the gardener by the garden gate, 28 x 36 cms. fully mounted, signed and dated '84, BBC broadcast 1982 ABOUT PAUL BIRKBECK; an appreciation, written by one of his daughters and published in the Guardian following his death. "My father, Paul Birkbeck, who has died aged 80, was an artist and illustrator whose work is familiar to those of a certain generation brought up on BBC childrens TV programmes such as Crystal Tipps and Alistair, Play School and Jackanory. His distinctive style and keen eye for detail ensured that he became one of the BBCs most-used artists through the 1970s and 80s. Born in Woolwich, south-east London, Paul attended Brighton College and Epsom School ofArt. After completing his national service, he also became the banjo player for the Dedicated Men Jugband, who signed to Pye Records in 1965. The bands single, Boodle Am Shake, did not trouble the charts but Paul soon began designing sleeves for Decca Records. In 1965 working with BBC childrens TV he became a prolific illustrator for its programmes. For Jackanory he illustrated 14 stories, including A Dog So Small (read by Judi Dench) and Peter Pan, (some in this sale), as well as the BBC Sunday afternoon Bible stories series In the Beginning. His work for Jackanory continued for many years. He created the memorable opening titles for The Vikings in 1980, presented by Magnus Magnusson, and the iconic Miss Marple series, starring Joan Hickson. Paul also drew the backgrounds for the ground-breaking TV series Jane, starring Glynis Barber, which mixed cartoon backgrounds with live actors and was based on the 1940s comic strip of the same name. (some in this sale). In 1991, as well as supplying illustrations, he was in front of the camera playing himself each week in the BBCs six-part childrens TV history programme Now Then, an educational show that cleverly brought our ancestors to life. Paul taught illustration at Leicester Polytechnic, Epsom College and the Royal College of Art, but continued to work in TV, including delivering the titles for the Stanley Baxter Show on Channel 4. He branched out into book illustration with Salman Rushdies 1990 childrens fairy tale Haroun and the Sea of Stories, for which his lavish pictures were much lauded, not least by Rushdie. My father spent the latter part of his life on personal commissions. His work appeared at the Keith Chapman Gallery, London, in Royal Academy summer shows and Sunday Times watercolour exhibitions between 2003 and 2008, and in the Mall Galleries Discerning Eye exhibitions. PROVENANCE The artworks in this sale have been consigned by his family. NOTES: The pictures in this sale were prepared in various mediums often used by the artist and often in conjunction with one another, including, pen and ink, crayon, water-colour, gouache, pastel, and oil and acrylic paints on card or on paper. The auctioneers acknowledge the help of his family in cataloguing this collection, and where-ever known each picture has been listed under its broadcast designation. but the vendors do not guarantee that all attributions in this respect are correct. The family do however guarantee that the pictures, both signed and unsigned are the work of Paul Birkbeck. . All sizes are approximate.

(4)Footnotes:Provenance: Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 11 July 2013, lot 49.Exhibited: London, Baillie Gallery, Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings by the late Simeon Solomon, 1905-06, no. 118, as 'Six panels forming a screen'.According to inscriptions to the reverse of some of these panels (together with a further two depicting Day and Night which sold Christie's, London, 11 July 2013, lot 48), they were conceived as part of a decorative scheme for the entrance hall of an as yet unidentified property. The property must surely have been designed in the Aesthetic taste. However, by 1906, the panels had been mounted into a folding screen and were exhibited in Solomon's memorial exhibition at the Baillie Gallery, London. It is clear, through comparison of subject and details, that Solomon has here borrowed from the works, by the same name, executed by Burne Jones. The Burne Jones paintings were executed between 1869 and 1871 for the Liverpool shipowner Frederick Leyland at his splendid properties 22 Queen's Gate and later 49 Prince's Gate, London. Edward Wilkins Waite (1854-1924)A girl by a garden gate, tending to her chickens and duckssigned 'Edward Waite' and dated 1894 l.l., oil on canvas61 x 51cmCondition report: Please condition report: The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has not been lined and has an artists’ supplier stamp on the reverse. The canvas tension is slightly slack and there are minor undulations across the canvas. The paint layer appears to be in a very good, stable condition with no evidence of damage or loss. The varnish is clear, semi-glossy and even. There is a light layer of dust and dirt on the front and reverse of the canvas. In general, I would say yes it is in good nic. The frame is period and with a bit of TLC, it would look good, however, intrinsically, it is not of particular importance or value. the picture comes from a private source. I hope this is of interest and if I can be of any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.Kind regards, Jane
