Rare American Civil War Period Burnside Cavalry Carbine .54 cal, 20 1/8 inch, browned rifled barrel. Front blade sight. Rear, flip up V sight. Barrel marked Burnside Patent March 1856 number 11277. Box breech numbered 2746 with hinged, down loading gate operated by the safety trigger guard. Side mounted Cavalry bar with sliding ring. Back action lock plate marked Burnside Rifle Co Providence R.I. Percussion hammer. Polished wooden butt with steel butt plate. Polished wooden forend secured by single steel barrel band. Developed by Ambrose Burnside using a specially designed metallic cartridge set off by a separate percussion cap.
