Thomas Koether (New York, Florida / Europe, Australia Born 1940) Large Abstract Painting. Size: 38 x 51 in. In 1960, Koether was accepted to the school of the Art Institute of Chicago at age 20. In 1963 Koether Moved to New York City and started going to the Art Student's League. In June of 1966 he graduated with honors from N.Y.U. and was accepted to the N.Y.U. graduate school of Communications Arts in Cinematography under Haig Manoogian. In 1970, he moved to Paris to take a studio space at the American Center on Boulevard Raspail. In July of ?71 Koether went to Italy and did a lot of drawing and watercolors. In Florence he met Italian art restorers and learned a lot about restoration from them. That same year, he participated in a group show at the American Center and sold several pieces ? one to director Henry Pillsbury. The work from Ibiza and Paris dealt with attempts to delineate abstraction as a form with his own experience of his own abstractness ? landscapes and still-lives of his own psychic and emotional space. This work has a post-psychedelic aspect. In 1974 Koether moved back to New York and worked in N.Y.C. as an art restorer with Roger Ricco Associates. That year, he had a one man show at Ajanta Gallery on East 9th Street. In 1976, Koether moved to Australia and established an art conservation business and worked on the 5 major collections of Oceanic art in Australia. Max Pollak (California, New York / Austria, 1886 - 1970) Etching Titled "New York: Wallstreet". Pencil signed and numbered (43/150) in lower margin. Pollak exhibited at the Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939 and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in 1940. He won California Society of Etchers awards in 1942, 1944, and 1945, as well as a Chicago Society of Etchers award in 1942. He continued to travel nationally?to Cincinnati, New Orleans, Chicago, and the east coast?and abroad to Guatemala and Mexico. Finally, Pollak settled in Sausalito, CA. Max Pollak's artworks are held in a number of important collections, including the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts in San Francisco, the British Museum, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Freud Museum in London, the Judah L. Magnes Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Oakland Museum, Princeton University, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.Image Size: 13.5 x 4.75 in. Plaque comes with research papers. Sergeant Frank George Stephens was born in Sebastopol, Victoria in 1897 and enlisted 18/8/1914, serving in ‘A’ Coy, 8th Bn. Served Gallipoli in 2nd wave of the 25th April landings, being wounded by shrapnel wound to the foot 4/5/1915, 11 days later being wounded in the right shoulder. Returned to ‘base’ June 1915, so most likely he would have been present with the 8th Bn in their attack on Lone Pine in August. On 18/8/1916 promoted Lance Corporal, temporary Sergeant on 21/6/1917 and Sergeant on 16/8/1917. He was mentioned in despatches for participation for a successful raid on enemy trenches on 30/9/1916 – Signed Major General H. B. Walker. Wounded 26/11/1916. Killed in Action 4/10/1917 during the Battle of Broodseinde, Belgium and has no known grave, being commemorated at The Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial (Panel 7).

Album of World War photographs belonging to Corporal Basil Ward, Durham Light Infantry, includes a few photographs and postcards from Egypt and Italy but is mainly of service in Germany immediately post war particularly of Berlin, showing the aftermath of the battle there, damaged German and Russian armoured vehicles, battle damaged land marks such as the Reichstag building, Brandenburg gate, Franco Prussian War Victory Column, etc, also photos of the Allied Victory parade in Berlin of British, Russian and American troops, loose photos also included, a fascinating collection of historical photographs, together with a small brass ashtray with a 'Berlin Bear' in the centre and the legend, 'A Souvenir of Germany 1945'

One depicts two ladies in the snow by a gate; another depicts two women in the snow under an umbrella, c. 1766-1767; the final print is "The Clear Day Mountain Wind of the Fan," c. 1766.
