Oil on board18cm x 30.5cm (7in x 12in)Footnote: Eardley had a solo exhibition at the Gaumont Cinema in Aberdeen in 1951. It was organised by the cinema's manager, Reg Miller and local art teacher Annette Soper. It was thanks to the latter that soon afterwards Eardley visited the nearby fishing village of Catterline for the first time, which was to have a tremendous impact on her life and work. She returned in 1952 and rented a cottage there from about 1954.Haystack and Farm Gate, Dusk is an intimate yet powerful work. It was probably painted in the hinterlands of Catterline but may have been made near Eardley's friend Audrey Walker's cottage in Caverslee in the Scottish Borders. Eardley found endless inspiration in the cycle of day into night, the seasons and the agricultural calendar as experienced in the countryside and captured in her work, which she executed en plein air. In this instance a view over a field to a haystack - or possibly the gable end of a house - caught her attention. The bottom right passage is suggestive of grazing sheep. The low horizon allows the foreboding sky equal presence in the composition. It was painted with vigour on board, which is left bare in some areas, increasing its sense of spontaneity. Certain passages verge on the abstract, whilst the surface is sensuous, with the result that a modest scene is transformed into a compelling image.

Thomas Hardy Interest:Hardy, Thomas, 'Time's Laughingstocks and Other Verses', Macmillan & Co., London, 1910With a handwritten dedication by Hardy: 'Miss Ethel Hawker, with Kind Regards, November 1910', accompanied by two press clippings:"Miss Hawker: In my copy of the Macmillan 1910 edition of Time's Laughing Stocks there is an inscription in the4 fly leaf...The inscription is in Hardy's hand. Perhaps some of your readers could identify Miss Ethel Hawker. I have done a little research on the Rev. Hawker of Morwenstowe, Cornwall, but can find no relation of his with the christian name Ethel, C.S.D. Byers, Mullins Lane, Hythe, Southampton"In response to this request for information, in 1978, T.L. Walter of 17 Vivian Park, Swanage writes:"Miss Hawker was a close friend of my parents and as a child I knew her well. She taught elocution, was an enthusiastic amateur actress in Bournemouth, and for many years a member of the Hardy Players. Hardy often invited her to Max Gate to recite poetry to him, and I have always regretted that I never asked her to get him to inscribe a book for me, though I often thought of doing so. She married Frank Pool, of Pool and Pool- the tailors and outfitters of the Square, Bournemouth- and lived in Richmond Park Road. After the death of her husband she made her home in Crondall, Hampshire"
