Lot 378

A large Chinese burnished pottery ovoid jar, Xindian cultureNeolithic period, 1600-600 BCEPainted in brown pigment to the neck with geometric bands representing clouds and thunder, the body with two 'yoke scroll' motifs and applied with two lug handles, 31.5cm high. 新石器時代 辛店文化 彩陶雙耳罐Provenance: English private collection.來源:英國私人收藏。Footnotes: This large jar has two yoke scroll motifs on the surface, a unique indication of being from the Xindian culture of the early Shang dynasty. There are also some animal figures, most likely to be goats and deer, on top of the yokes. Around the rim there is a wide band composed of painted geometric lines representing "cloud and thunder", classic decorations on early bronzes. The two large ‘ear’ handles are firmly attached to opposite sides of the rounded body. They are large enough to ensure the hands can properly hold them, so this jar is made to be hand-carried. The surface is partially burnished, leaving many scratching traces. The body shows uneven firing patterns similar to the Siwa culture pottery, which could also be resulted from being used for cooking. Xindian jars of such size and finely painted patterns are rare.W. SHANSHAN is a London and Paris based gallery that is specialized in ancient art. The gallery exhibits a selection of rare artworks, particularly Asian ceramics, bronzes, stone sculptures from the Neolithic period to 10th century.

A SMALL HUANGHUALI TAPERING ROUND-CORNER CABINET, YUANJIAOGUIQing DynastyThe floating panel top set into a standard mitre, mortise and tenon, tongue and groove frame with rounded corners, the four main stiles gently splayed and double-tenoned into the top, rounded on the exterior edges, each door inset with a well-figured panel, the interior fitted with two shelves, the door frame members and the central stile fitted with two curved rectangular metal plates with a lock receptacle. 72cm (28 2/8in) high x 50cm (19 5/8in) wide x 28cm (11in) deep.Footnotes:清 黃花梨圓角櫃Provenance: Klas E Böök (1909-1980), Sweden, acquired during his service as Swedish Ambassador to Beijing, 1956-1961, and thence by descent来源: Klas E Böök (1909-1980),瑞典,在擔任瑞典駐北京大使期間獲得,1956-1961,並由後人保存迄今。A Swedish diplomat and civil servant, Mr Böök first had a career in banking, that led up to the position of Governor of the Swedish National Bank from 1948 to 1951. His diplomatic career began when he was appointed head of the Commercial Department of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and envoy from 1947 to 1948. He was Minister in Ottawa from 1951 to 1956, Ambassador in Beijing from 1956 to 1961, and also accredited as envoy to Bangkok from 1956 to 1959. Böök was the Swedish Ambassador to New Delhi, India, and also accredited to Colombo and Kathmandu from 1961 to 1965 and in Bern from 1965 to 1972. He had special assignments for the Swedish Foreign Ministry from 1972 to 1975.The present cabinet epitomises the elegant design of classical Chinese furniture, achieved through a harmonious blend of flat surfaces and rounded elements. Particularly noteworthy are the four recessed stiles, gently sloping outward from the top corners, and the slight outward splay of the four square legs, conveying a sense of upward movement and adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the cabinet.Round-corner cabinets are one of four distinct styles of cabinets with shelves crafted by Chinese furniture artisans, alongside open-shelf stands jiage, cabinets with open shelves liangegui, and square-corner cabinets fangjiaogui; see Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1990, vol.1, pp.82 and 85.Historically, the tapered cabinet evolved from the form of large chests with panelled doors, which were utilised for storing silk cloths during the Song period; see S.Handler, Austere Luminosity of Chinese Classical Furniture, Berkeley, 2001, p.244, pl.15.5. These cabinets, such as the present examples, later found a place in scholars' studios, where they were used to store books, scrolls and writing instruments. A depiction in a hanging scroll from the Ming dynasty illustrates a scholar standing beside a small cabinet, poised to select a work from the shelves stocked with books and scrolls; see L.Lin, Catalogue to the Special Exhibition of Furniture in Paintings, Taipei, 1996, pl.9. Compare with a similar small huanghuali round-corner tapered cabinet, Ming dynasty, illustrated by G.Wu Bruce, Two Decades of Ming Furniture, Beijing, 2010, p.220. A pair of related huanghuali, burlwood and fruitwood cabinets, 17th/18th century, was sold at Bonhams London, 13 May 2021, lot 17.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP Y* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A RARE PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE YELLOW-GROUND 'WAN SHOU WU JIANG' BAJIXIANG BOWLSJiaqing seal marks and of the periodEach expertly potted with deep sides rising from a short foot to a slightly flaring rim, the exteriors richly decorated with four iron-red roundels containing the characters wan shou wu jiang, meaning 'countless years of long life without limit', all beneath the Bajixiang and lotus flowers on a yellow ground, the interiors with five iron-red bats around a shou character. Each 12.9cm (5 1/8in) diam. (2).Footnotes:清嘉慶 黃地粉彩「萬壽無疆」碗一對礬紅「大清嘉慶年製」篆書款Provenance: Gustaf Oscar Wallenberg (1865-1937), Stockholm, and thence by descent來源: Gustaf Oscar Wallenberg (1865-1937),斯德哥爾摩,並由後人保存迄今Gustaf O. Wallenberg was a Swedish businessman, diplomat and active politician. He was the son of André Oscar Wallenberg, founder of Stockholm Enskilda Bank (today's Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken, known as SEB). After a career in the Swedish Navy he turned to the business world and was active in improving the transoceanic shipping industry. Wallenberg was Sweden's Envoy to Tokyo between 1907-1918. In April 1907 he travelled to Beijing to amend the Treaty of Canton (1847) between Sweden-Norway and China and to establish diplomatic relations between Sweden and the Qing Court. As the Swedish Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary at the Court of Peking, he successfully negotiated and signed with Lien Fang, the Guangxu Emperor's High Commissioner Plenipotentiary and Senior Vice-President of the Wai Wu Pu, the Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation, between Sweden and China, which was signed in Beijing on 2 July 1908, with an additional article signed on 24 May 1909.The collection was acquired between 1907 and 1918 when Wallenberg was the Swedish Envoy in Tokyo, and possibly during his diplomatic service in China. Documents preserved at the Östasiatiska Museum in Stockholm demonstrate the importance of Gustaf Wallenberg and his extensive connections with the Qing government to the Swedish engineers and businessmen who were in China during this period, such as Johan Gunnar Andersson, Osvald Siren, Orvar Karlbeck, Erik Nordstrom and many more.Gustaf Wallenberg was the grandfather of Raoul Gustaf Wallenberg (1912-1945), an architect, businessman, and diplomat. Raoul Wallenberg has been designated by Yad Vashem as one of the Righteous Among Nations, as well as having many monuments and streets named after him in honour of him saving thousands of Jews in German-occupied Hungary during the Second World War, while serving as Sweden's Special Envoy in Budapest. As he lost his father the same year he was born, he was brought up also by his grandfather Gustaf Wallenberg, with the Chinese porcelain collection around him, inheriting part of the collection when his grandfather passed away in 1937. He died at a time unknown between 1945 and 1947, further to his detention in Budapest by General Malinovsky in 1944, and arrest by the Soviet authorities. Further to his disappearance his part of the Chinese collection was deposited at the Östasiatiska Museum in Stockholm, and later released to the family.Bowls and dishes of this type, with their wish for long life, are often designated 'birthday dishes' and would have been likely commissioned to commemorate the birthday of an important individual of the court. Various versions of decorative elements were produced with the yellow ground, a colour traditionally associated with Imperially-mandated ceramics. The distinctive combination of lotus scroll, Buddhist emblems and four characters against a yellow ground is also known in the Qianlong period in versions painted in enamel on copper. See for example, a Qianlong mark and period bowl in the collection of the Denver Art Museum, (acc.no 2017.42). Compare with a single underglaze blue, but similarly decorated 'wan shou wu jiang' bowl, Jiaqing six-character mark and of the period, which was sold at Christie's London, 11 May 2015, lot 11.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A COPPER-RED AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE APPLE-SHAPED WATERPOT, PINGGUO ZUNKangxi six-character mark, 19th centuryDensely decorated to the exterior in crushed-raspberry tones with four intricate floral blooms of lotus, hibiscus, chrysanthemum and peony, a band of foliate scrolls within underglaze blue lines encircling the foot, and a floral scroll border between underglaze blue lines to the mouth. 12cm (4 3/4in) diam.Footnotes:十九世紀 青花釉裡紅蘋果尊青花「大清康熙年製」楷書款Provenance: the Honourable Mrs Nellie Ionides (1883-1962), and thence by descent來源: 尊敬的 Nellie Ionides 夫人 (1883-1962),並由後人保存迄今Nellie Ionides (1883-1962) was the daughter of Sir Marcus Samuel (1853-1927), one of the founders of Shell Oil, and Lord Mayor of London, 1902-1903. She was a legendary collector with a particular interest in Kangxi porcelain, with parts of her collection published in R.L Hobson's The Later Ceramic Wares of China, 1924, under the name of her first husband, 'The Hon. Mrs Walter Levy'. Much of her collection passed to the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, with some pieces being retained by the family. Alongside Chinese ceramics she collected landscapes, enamels, musical instruments, clocks, brass jelly moulds and Victorian genre scenes of dogs. Her own poodle was known as Clicquot, short for Vulcan Champagne Clicquot. The present lot is based on Kangxi period prototypes; see one, Kangxi six-character mark and period, illustrated in The Wonders of the Potter's Palette: Qing Ceramics from the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1984, pp.42-43, no.10. Apple-shaped waterpots belong to a group of vessels for the scholar's table known as Ba da ma, 'Eight Great Numbers', which were made during the Kangxi reign. This group was previously thought to comprise a total of eight differing shapes. John Ayers identified a possible ninth form, however, by pointing out the existence of two slightly different globular water pots. The first is the pingguo zun, 'apple jar' such as the current example; and the other with a raised, low, neck (similar to a stalk) that may be referred to as a shiliu zun, or 'pomegranate jar'. See, J.Ayers, 'The 'Peachbloom Wares of the Kangxi Period (1662-1722), Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol. 64, 1999-2000, p.49.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A PALE GREEN AND RUSSET JADE 'CHILONG' POMMELLate Ming/early Qing DynastyThe attractive stone retaining the original russet skin, boldly worked into the skilful depiction of a chilong with long scaly body writhing around the exterior with a large archaistic monster-face on the side, the pale green background intricately worked with archaistic leiwen scroll, the interior a pale mottled green. 7cm (2 3/4in) long. This fine collection of jade and hardstone carvings was studiously formed by a London-based British collector over the past fifteen years. The collector, a professional cellist, would regularly visit our London rooms during the Chinese art sales, looking carefully and studying each jade carving, with a fondness to those of animals or mythical beasts. He always visited the exhibition at least twice, with his mantra being that if the object did not make sufficient impression on him to recall it in detail, then it's not for him. The first piece he acquired from Bonhams was the fine yellow hardstone carving of a lion and cub, Qianlong – a truly magnificent piece, of mesmerising colour and exquisite carving. It also benefited from having been collected by R.H.R. Palmer who acquired it in 1936, with a possible earlier connection of the piece to the imperial collections. Also of note in the collection, and of obvious attraction to the collector, was the rare category of yellow jade carvings. These do not come up often and were greatly treasured in the past as indeed today. To have three of those is quite something, particularly with two carvings dating to the Ming and one, a very fine example of the late 17th century. It is now for the next collector to admire and enjoy them. The quality of the stone and workmanship on this pommel is exceptional. The skill of the artisan in incorporating the natural skin colour of the stone into the subject is consistent with that displayed on other jades from the Qing Court Collection, in the Palace Museum, Taipei. Compare the depiction of the chilong to that on a jade 'horn-shaped' censer, illustrated in Through the Prism of the Past: Antiquarian Trends in Chinese Art of the 16th to 18th Century, Taipei, 2003, p.153, pl.III-18. The censer, 17th century, shares the same colour of stone to the current lot. The same scroll motifs worked into the stone closely match those on a jade cup illustrated Ibid, p.162, pl.III-28. See also a green jade sword bi with taotie and chilong, Qing dynasty, in the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum: Jade, 9, Beijing, 2011, p.126.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
