Decorated in relief with a tree in a landscape, height 7.5cm, width 3.5cm, depth 2cm.Private collection of a Parisian lady (1876-1964), whence by family descent to the present South West Cornwall vendor.This opulent piece has a small chip to the lip and to the foot and, intriguingly, what appears to be a small scroll located within. A large pair of Chinese ancestor portrait scroll paintings, late 19th/early 20th century. The seated male figure wearing a blue robe with rank badge, the female in a red robe with rank badge, unframed, 207.5 x 96.5cm, image size 153 x 85cm. (2)West Cornwall private seller, by family descent. The vendor inherited items from her great grandfather Captain John Dewar (ship master). He was born in Shanghai in 1866 and died in 1950. His wife Susan Smith Oudney (1875-1967) whose father was William Oudney a master mariner owned two clipper ships including 'The Coach Inn'. John and Susan married in Shanghai in 1896.
A Chinese gilt bronze censer and cover, late Ming Dynasty. Xuande mark, with elephant mask handles, the body with dragons amongst clouds in high relief, with pierced cover and scroll feet, height 15.5cm, width 19cm, depth 15.5cm.The Vandekar family established their internationally renowned antiques dealership in Amsterdam before moving to London in 1916. They specialized in the decorative arts of the 17th-20th century with a particular interest in 18th-19th century European and Chinese ceramics. In the 1970s and 80s, Michael Beard worked as a ceramics expert in the London showroom of Earle D. Vandekar of Knightsbridge, travelling internationally to trade shows and antiques fairs, and helping with the launch of the New York branch of Vandekar in 1982. There is no surprise that he leaves in his estate some beautiful examples of porcelain, ceramics, and objets d’art. When Michael retired to Cornwall around 1988 he settled at first in St Ives, where he became a prominent patron of the arts and a devoted member of the Old Cornwall Society. On his death he has left a collection boasting some fine examples of Cornish painting, sculpture, studio pottery, and decorative chinoiserie. No damages. Weight of censer body 1702 grams. A 20th Century Chinese carved hardwood desk, or writing table, the shelved superstructure with two drawers and cupboard door, the base with two frieze drawers over a bamboo carved frieze on carved cabriole legs to scroll feet, 93 cm wide x 56 cm deep x 118.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Crack to rear bamboo gallery left side of centre and repaired cracks left hand side beneath the gallery. Signs of bird droppings to the top shelf, suggesting barn storage. Two dividers missing from the middle shelf. Writing surface with cracking along the joints and dowel repair to right hand corner. The underside lid rim has a chip and loss. The base is in generally good condition but does have firing marks to the centre and around one handle. The bottom handle scroll on one side is missing.
