CHINESE SCHOOL, 18th/19th century A painted hanging scroll depicting a Jesuit Missionary Station, with four figures in and around a courtyard with a small dog, another figure looking down from a tower, 140cm x 95cm, opaque watercolours on silk, upon a woven laid silk borders, solid hardwood roller, overall 217cm x 114.5cm Condition report Many creases throughout. Marks and damage to the woven silk. Paint has flaked, signs of age wear and fading of the paint
A PAIR OF CHINESE FAMILLE VERTE PORCELAIN OVOID JARS, each painted with a sage riding a Kylin accompanied by four boy attendants, later adapted with French ormolu mounts to serve as lamps, with open scroll and rocaille bases, early Kangxi (1672-1722), 30cm high. Condition report Drilled bases, all faults.
A late 18th/early 19th century Chinese porcelain plate, painted in underglaze blue with four warriors fighting, within a band of bats on scroll ground, bearing Kangxi four character mark to base, diameter 19.5cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a chip to the rim and a hairline spreading from it and three other areas of hairlines.
A late 18th/early 19th century Chinese porcelain plate painted in underglaze blue with eight immortals seated upon various celestial animals, within floral and scroll border, bearing Yu (jade) mark to the base, diameter 24cm and a further example painted with eight boys playing within border of lucky bats on geometrical ground, unmarked, diameter 20cm (af) (2). CONDITION REPORT: Both plates have some chips and areas of fritting to the rims, the larger plate with hairline spreading from one of the chips.
A near pair of 19th century Chinese vases and covers, painted in underglaze blue with two opposing panels depicting battle scenes on a scroll ground within floral bands, with dog of Fo finials, each bearing Kangxi four character mark to base, height 32cm and 33cm (af). CONDITION REPORT: One of the vases has a crudely reglued area to the neck, approx 3cm of losses to the rim. The other vase has a hairline spreading from the rim and an area of firing imperfection, one area of fritting to the rim and some small nibbles to the base and chips to rims of the covers.
A Chinese late Ming Provincial ceramic baluster jar with turquoise glazed footed and mould scroll decorated upper body, unmarked, height 14cm including a later turned zitan cover. CONDITION REPORT: A few tiny foot rim chips, crazing throughout, otherwise appears good with no further obvious faults, damage or restoration.
Two small late 19th/early 20th century Chinese porcelain pilgrim/moonflasks, painted in underglaze blue with dragon amongst clouds to both sides, on scroll and floral ground with twin dragon hands, height 10cm (one af). A pair of 19th century Chinese stem cups, painted in underglaze blue with flower head on scroll ground within cloud border to the top and with geometrical motifs to the tapering leg, diameter 10cm (af). CONDITION REPORT: One cup with two chips to the rim and several areas of fritting/shallow chips, the other cup with pitting and fritting and shallow chips to the edge.
A Chinese Qianlong gilt bronze and cloisonné enamel circular paste box, overall decorated with flower heads on a scroll ground, the detachable lid centred with a roundel of character marks, four character mark to base, diameter 10cm. CONDITION REPORT: General condition appears to the good, surface wear particularly to the gilt parts, several air bubble imperfections throughout.
A c.1900 Chinese ebonised carved hardwood hall bench, elaborately decorated with a dragon amongst clouds to the domed back above two dragon panels and dragon head shaped elbow rests, on five foliate and scroll decorated cabriole legs, 127 x 51.5cm. CONDITION REPORT: Loss to the main dragon's jaw, general surface wear including areas of flaking to the paint, frame loose, surface dirt commensurate with age.
THREE CHINESE SCROLL PAINTINGS ON PAPER QING DYNASTY One attributed to Feng Chao Ran depicting a scholar by a lake in a mountainous landscape, with a poem and three artist's seals, signed and dated wu yan year, 116cm x 31cm, a second attributed to Xu Cao depicting a horse and two figures beneath a pine tree, signed and with two artist's and one collector's seal, 129cm x 35cm, the third scroll after Zhang Da Qian depicting a butterfly and a lotus bud, 58cm x 30cm. A CHINESE MOTTLED GREY JADE ARCHAISTIC VASE MING DYNASTY The stone with dramatic black vertical striations, the body carved in relief with taotie masks and mythical beasts divided by flanges, the sides with two small elephant masks, the flared rim with formal lappets, the foot with raised geometric designs, together with a wood stand, 12.5cm. (2) Provenance: Christie's, London, 3rd November 1969, lot 136. The famous Guwantu scroll in the Victoria and Albert Museum documenting the Yongzheng Emperor's treasures illustrates a number of jade vessels including a closely related vase.
A CHINESE BAMBOO BITONG PROBABLY QING DYNASTY Reticulated and carved in relief with Confucian scholars examining a scroll beneath a pine tree, with further scholars and attendants amongst rocks, signed Ma Guo Zhen Ke, 16.3cm. Scottish cloak brooch - With hallmarks of Queen Victoria's head, thistle and maker's mark M.C. Bird Brooch - Stamped 'Sterling'. Three clear paste stones missing. Blue stone with chip under a claw and sight wear. 5cm across. Topaz set brooch - With soldered repairs to the back and additional gold plated panels added. Oval amethyst paste brooch - Mount worn and repaired and facets on stone rubbed, 2.4cm wide. Square amethyst paste set brooch - Stamped 'T+H' to the reverse. A GOOD PAIR OF 17TH CENTURY CHINESE TRANSITIONAL/KANGXI PERIOD BLUE & WHITE PORCELAIN BOWLS, the exterior sides painted with a formal design of hanging vine and leafage above a linked ruyi border, the interior centre similarly painted within a formal scroll border to the rim, each base with a six-character Jiajing mark in underglaze-blue, each base with a paper collection label, one base with a 1913 Manchester City Art Gallery exhibition label. Bought at Christies 1941.Recently Provided Provenace History: From the Collection of Robert Henry Benson (1850-1929) Exhibited at the 'Exhibition of Chinese Applied Art' City of Manchester Art Gallery, 1913, no's 460 & 461, described as Jiajing Period. Included in Christies celebrated sale of part of the Benson Collection, July 1st 1924, Lot 189 (as Jiajing), bought by Harcourt Johnstone (1895-1945) for 15 guineas. Included in the Sothebys sale of the Harcourt Johnstone Collection, June 13th 1940, Lot 49 and described as Transitional.
A RARE FINE QUALITY 18TH/19TH CENTURY CHINESE GOLD SPLASH FANGHU BRONZE VASE & COVER, decorated with bands of taotie and other archaic motifs, the sides with double mythical animal head and scroll handles, the whole with gold splash on a patinated ground, the base cast with a six-character Xuande mark, 17.5in(44.5cm) high overall.(formerly the property of an American museum - c.f. a gold splash censer was sold at John Nicholsons Lot 98 22nd March 2017).
A LARGE CHINESE YONGZHENG PERIOD MING STYLE 'LOTUS BOUQUET' PORCELAIN DISH, of saucer shape, the interior painted with a ribbon tied bouquet within a formal band of formal scrolling flowerheads, the exterior with a similar band within key-fret and scroll borders, the base unglazed, 15.25in(38.7cm) diameter. Bought Rangoon 1928. Damaged in a fire at the Mergui Customs House in 1935.
