His father, Hu Weide, was the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Qing Dynasty, and briefly served as the Premier of the Republic of China after Duan Qirui was ousted from Beijing in 1926. He was instrumental in bringing democracy to the Qing Dysnasty and was a member of the Chinese delegation at both the Treaty of Versailles as well as the Hague Peace Conference.Hu Shi Xi was a Chinese dignitary, the Chief Ambassador of the Republic of China in Canada, as well as an executive chief of embassies in many Spanish-speaking countries: Spain, Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, and others. In addition to his diplomatic skills, Hu Shi Xi was gifted artist, exhibiting his artworks at public exhibitions and diplomatic soirees to great acclaim. During his time posted in Europe and South America, he counted amongst his friends and visitors many other well known artists, such as Zhang Daqian. Chen Banding (Chinese, 1876-1970): Birds and Flowers, the birds sitting in a wisteria tree, a peony flowering beneath, a hanging scroll of ink and colour on paper, stamped with the artist's seal and signed, the characters translate as 'painted by the old man Banding, in the autumn of the year of bingxu', believed to be referring to 1946, 91 by 214cm.Provenance: Given to the vendor by a great aunt who spent two years in China and travelled extensively.

Acupuncture.- Jinshin Gozo No Zu; Ôjin Meido No Zu; Sokujin Meido No Zu; Fukujin Meido No Zu, 4 large rolled wood-block print scrolls, browned, one or two tiny areas of loss, contemporary Japanese wooden scroll mounts with contemporary silk wrapping cords, laid into recent Japanese wooden box, v.s., Tokyo, Musashi Toyoshima, 1662.⁂ A complete set of four seventeenth-century Tokugawa hanging scrolls demonstrating the Japanese art of acupuncture. They illustrate the organs, meridians and meridial points in front, side, rear and internal depictions of the human figure. A Chinese bronze octafoil mirror, Tang Dynasty (618-907), of linghua (water chestnut flower) shape and crisply cast, the knob surrounded by four animals shown in lively positions as they frolic atop a flowering scroll within the raised inner edge of the outer band cast in the eight barbed lobes with alternating insects and foliate sprays, grey patina and small patches of small reddish crystal patina, approximately 17cm diameter, 511 grams Provenance: Purchased by the current vendors late father in the 1960's from the George Family. By repute it was collected by the British officer Robin George during the Boxer rebellion, and thence by descent through his family. George left China in 1901 for India, where he married before returning to the UK.
