A Chinese export silver coloured ovoid pedestal ewer or claret jug, possibly altered from a vase, third quarter 19th century, maker's mark 'S.M.', the domed cover with a leaf and bud finial, the leaf-capped high scroll handle chased with flowers and scrolls, a broad band pierced and chased with birds, flowers, foliage and fruit, a snake entwining the base, on a circular foot chased with a lappet band, 34cm (13.25in) high, 1030g (33 oz) (the cover hinge now detached). A Chinese Ming style blue and white porcelain vase, Qing dynasty, 19th century, painted with a fenced garden of bamboo, plantain and roc work below a ruyi head shoulder, karakusa scroll and plantain leaves to the neck, the lower border with stylized petals and demi florets, the trumpet mouth chipped, glaze firing faults, 30cm high Note: The design of bamboo, plantain and rocks originates from the Hongwu period and there are closely related vases from the Yongle period, such as the vase in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in the Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum (blue and white porcelain with under-glazed red (1) Hong Kong 2000 plate 33). This appears to be a late Qing copy in an earlier style.
