The famous general seated on an elaborately carved chair and wearing a long coat over a dragon robe as he reads from the Spring and Autumn annals. With a silk brocade frame and mounted as a hanging scroll.Provenance: Sigurd Reininghaus (1933-1981). From the collection of Dr. Ferdinand and Dr. Gudrun Thaler-Szulyovsky, acquired from the above and thence by descent in the same family. The couple, who had both been practicing law, met in 1967 through their mutual passion for art. Together they built a substantial and diverse art collection over many decades. Ernst Eichler (1932-2018) was a judge and poet, writing under the pseudonym of Ernst David. His works have been published worldwide and translated into many languages, including Japanese. A STRAW-GLAZED AND INCISED 'TEA LEAVES' EWER, SONG DYNASTYChina, 960-1279. The pear-shaped body rising from a short straight foot, the sides decorated with incised tea leaves, the shoulder with two scroll-shaped appliques, covered overall with a straw glaze with a fine crackle just short of the foot revealing the buff ware.Condition: Minor wear, firing flaws, intentional crackling. Tiny losses around mouth of the spout and a small chip around the foot rim.Provenance: Fai Kei Ferros Velhos, Macao. Dr. Koos de Jong, acquired from the above in 1998 (invoice not available). Dr. de Jong is a Dutch art historian and has been privately collecting Chinese art over decades. He has authored hundreds of articles and several books on Dutch fine and decorative arts spanning from the Middle Ages to the modern era. In 2013, he published an extensive study of Chinese riding gear in "Dragon & Horse, Saddle Rugs and Other Horse Tack from China and Beyond". A LARGE PORCELAIN FAMILLE ROSE 'BAJIXIANG' TRIPOD INCENSE BURNERChina, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) to Republic Period (1912-1949). Apocryphal Jiaqing seal mark in a horizontal line in iron red. The globular body with pierced upright curved handles on each side and three stoutly rounded cabriole legs. The censer is sturdily potted and enameled on the body with the Eight Buddhist Emblems, Bajixiang, amidst lotus flowers and tendrils extending onto the legs, all reserved against a lime-green ground. Pink bats are flanking the handles, the waisted neck is encircled by floral scroll below a key-fret band on the galleried rim. With matching base and cover both beautifully carved from dark wood, the lid is flanked with a whitish jade handle with dark streaks.This incense burner is likely to have been part of a five-piece altar garniture set, known as the 'Five Offerings' (wugong 五供), which were widely used in Buddhist rituals to seek protection from the deities. In shape and decoration, the vessels included in these sets, which also comprised a pair of candlesticks and wine containers, recall those employed to perform ancestral sacrifices during the Shang and Zhou periods. Restoring the ancient Chinese ways through the reinterpretation of archaic forms was viewed by the Qing rulers as one way to reinstate the importance of performing filial acts, the core value of Confucian thought that legitimized the emperors' right to rule.Condition: Very good condition with some minor, age-related wear, some minor flakes and glaze chips. The Chinese association of dove pairs is with fidelity, as this bird pairs for life. The interior of the cover with gold takamaki-e, iro-e kirigane, gold hiramaki-e, and silver dew drops to depict chrysanthemums and other flowers behind a fence against a nashiji ground. A 'BUTTERFLIES AND LOTUS' LADY'S ROBEChina, 1900 - 1920. Finely worked in Beijing stitch and satin stitch with numerous fluttering butterflies and lotus sprays picked out in vibrant shades of blue against the blue ground. The collar, and sleeve bands with similar decoration, the side border with multi-colored floral scroll.Since the word for "butterfly" in Chinese (die) is a homonym for "octogenarian," the butterfly is a symbol of longevity. It is also usually an auspicious image associated with joy and weddings, and this robe might have been worn for such an occasion.Condition: Good condition with wear, little soiling and traces of use, few loose threads, minor tears, and repairs. A RARE BAMBOO NETSUKE OF KANZAN AND JITTOKU WITH DRUNKEN MINOGAMEUnsignedJapan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Depicting the two famous immortals Kanzan (Hanshan) to the right and Jittoku to the left (Shide), the latter with one large tuft of hair on the forehead and the former with two tufts of hair on each side. Both are laughing mischievously as they lure a minogame with a filled sake saucer (sakazuki), the thousand-year-old tortoise lapping up the liquid, and Jittoku readying his gourd-shaped sake flask for a re-fill. The bamboo showing characteristic dotted markings throughout and bearing a stunning patina. Good, asymmetrical himotoshi underneath the minogame.LENGTH 5.2 cmCondition: Very good condition with old minuscule nicks to edges.Provenance: French private collection.A very unusual representation of this pair, who are usually depicted with a scroll and broom. This representation is very much in the Chinese and old Japanese style.

The removable figure of the famous Chinese calligrapher Wang Xizhi, riding on the goose's back, wearing an elaborated gold and silver inlaid robe, holding a scroll in his right hand.Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, scratches, and casting flaws. According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar.

His most well-known treatise is Zhongguo Huaxue quanshi (A Complete History of Chinese Paintings), an extensive overview of Chinese artists and their practice. Fang Jiekan (1901-1987) was painter, calligrapher, and seal engraver. He worked as the editor for the magazine of the National Palace Museum and was also the professor at Shanghai Meizhuan and the China Art School.Zheng Yue (1902-1975), also known as Zhen Manqing, was a notable Chinese calligrapher, painter, poet, and had expertise in taiqi and Chinese medicine. Due to his skills, he was often referred to as the 'Master of Five Excellences'.
