A Chinese dish, painted in underglaze blue, wucai enamels and gilt with a kylin beside bamboo, prunus, flowers and rockwork, beneath a flying phoenix, the cavetto with a leaf scroll border, the base with a rare pentafoil medallion containing a phoenix and cloud scrolls, Kangxi 1662-1722, old restoration to the rim, 30.7cm. A fine Chinese cloisonne ink-stick stand, the rectangular top decorated with the Eight Horses of Mu Wang, raised as a gilt edged panel on a base with scroll ends decorated with stylized lotus, on a turquoise ground, the borders Royal blue with a gilt scroll, unmarked, Qianlong 1736-95, 10.3cm. Together with a related wooden box cover inscribed bao mo tai (precious ink stand). (2) Provenance: by repute Mr Hetherington, a member of the British diplomatic staff at the Japanese embassy in the 1890s. Cf. China, The Three Emperors 1662-1795, p.227 for a yellow jade example from the Palace Museum, Beijing.
A Chinese agate snuff bottle and stopper, one side carved with two figures in a small boat, beneath a cloud scroll with a single character mark, 19th century, inventory no.30037, 8.5cm. Provenance: an important European private collection formed in the 19th century by a Russian nobleman and diplomat.
A good Chinese blue and white compressed circular vase, the body painted with a wide band of four phoenix in flight, divided by large peony blooms issuing from a continuous serpentine scroll, the shoulder with panels of peony and chrysanthemum on a complex geometric ground, Wanli 1573-1620, 25.5cm across. Cf. J. Harrison-Hall, Ming Ceramics in the British Museum, p.291, no. II:35, for a related example.
A Rare Chinese Jade Inscribed Boulder Carving, Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period 1736-95, incised with a poem, and with five seal marks including Qianlong Chenhan, 18.5cm high, 15.3cm wide. Worked from a pale celadon coloured stone with honey brown striations, and carved with a solitary Luohan, sitting in a rocky outcrop and wearing loose flowing robes decorated with a geometric pattern. The Luohan, is about to open a hand-scroll, he has left his shoes at the front of the base. The rocks are inscribed with six columns of calligraphy including one rectangular, and four square seal marks, the calligraphy with traces of gilding. The poem reads: `Liao Yi Qie Fa, Can Ru Shi Jing, Shui Liu Shi Leng, Feng Guo Hua Xin, Shi Hu Lun Di, Shi Guang Ming Zang, Li Yi Sao Chu, Shi Wei Li Zhang`. The lower section is inscribed: `Di Shi San Wei Ba Na Ta Ga Zun Zhe` (the thirteenth Luohan Banata) The seals read: `Ta Ge (the chamber of Ta), `Ying Chu Lan Xiang`, `Hui Yue Se ? You Sheng, `Wei Jing Wei Yi`, `Qian Long Chen Han`. Provenance A private collection in Monaco, purchased at Spink & Son Ltd., before 1982. With thanks to Ching-Yi Huang of SOAS for her help in cataloguing this lot.
A large Chinese square stone panel, the surface carved with calligraphy including the date for the second year of Sui gong corresponding to 686AD, the sides with stylized leaf scroll, possibly Tang dynasty, together with a glass top and plinth, to be used as a side table, 38.8cm. (3) Provenance: purchased from Arch Angel Antiques, Hong Kong.
A nineteenth century Chinese table clock, the twin fusee movement with a verge escapement and a ting tang on bells, the back plate with an engraved border and calligraphy, the circular white enamel dial with Roman Numerals with a chased brass surround decorated foliage, dragons and a lion mask above calligraphy, in a glazed hardwood case, the plinth pierced with carved foliage, on scroll feet. 20. 5in (52cm).
A 19th Century Chinese jade bottle - A pale green jade vase of slender high shouldered form with a compressed ovoid body set with a small domed cover with bird finial, the two united by a carved jade chain link. The body further detailed with open scroll handles with ring loops and a pair of ducks resting to water lilies to the side, the whole raised to a carved hardwood stand, possibly 18th or early 19th century, height 22.5 cm.
