Late 18th Century Chinese blue and white export armorial part dinner service, comprising two rectangular serving plates, three plates and three bowls, each of slightly shaped outline, the centres enamelled and gilded with armorial bearings, by repute of the Whitclock family (sinister Argent: a fox [or wolf] sejant erect; dexter Azure: on a chevron or between three falcons close or), beneath a dove with wings outstretched upon a castle or fort, and wreath / torse, banner with motto beneath (presumably mistranscribed) 'QUODCUNCQUE EVENIRET OPTIMUM' [sic], flanked by flowers and foliage within narrow red and gilt scroll and broad diaper and floral spray borders, the shaped edge profusely decorated with flowers and foliage with traces of gilding, comprising two rectangular serving plates, three plates and three bowls, 30.5cm diameter and smaller, (a/f)One serving plate with 10mm chip to one corner leading to 90mm crack. One bowl with two crudely repaired breaks to the rim with old glue staining and residue and chips to rim edge. Two remaining bowls with chip to underside of rim edge. Two plates broken and re-glued, one with detached rim section and glue residue. Remaining plate with rim fritting and chips. All pieces with varying degrees of wear to the enamels and gilding.

Some staining centre right. Small hole to the centre with smaller holes scattered through the lower half. Long tare to lower right corner.

ZOHIKO: A GOLD LACQUER KOBAKO WITH CRANES AND PINEBy the Zohiko company, Zohiko seal markJapan, 19th centuryOf rectangular form, finely decorated in gold hiramaki-e, and kirigane with pine trees along a shore and two cranes, the sides with a continuation of the landscape. The interior lacquered in nashiji. Gold fundame along on the edges. The underside with a seal mark ZOHIKO, the character zo shaped as an elephant.SIZE 9.4 x 7.8 x 2.4 cmCondition: Very good condition with little wear, light surface scratching, small crack to one corner, minor chipping.Provenance: Ex-collection Claudio Perino, a collector with a keen interest in Japanese, Chinese and Far Eastern cultures. His collection consists of over 2000 works of art, partly loaned to the Museum of Oriental Arts (MAO) in Turin, Italy and to the Museo delle Culture (MUSEC) in Lugano, Switzerland. An exhibition of Kakemono scroll paintings was on view in the MUSEC until end of April 2021.The Zohiko company is a famous company of lacquerers established in the late 17th century and still active today.
