Yang Borui, et al, 19th century, a Chinese hanging scroll with two calligraphies and a landscape. Yang Borui active in the Daoguang and Xianfeng periods, 1821-1861. Three fan pictures mounted as a hanging scroll. Upper calligraphy signed Wiechen, sealed Weng Weichen, W51cm. Middle calligraphy signed Wu Shizeng, sealed Weng Weichen, seal, W26.1cm. Lower landscape, ink and colour on gold flecked paper, signed Yang Borui, W50.2cm. The upper body is overall good with no obvious faults/areas of spraying to interior . There are three marker labels inside which correlates to an area of overpainting to the exterior behind the scene of the ladies playing the Qin to the left hand side, confined to some foliage, possibly running down the panel to the lady outside the compound.Some old over-spraying around the foot, with related hairlines, with some retouching which can be seen under UV light. Although hard to ascertain exactly the extent of damage. It is likely that it could be just some consolidation of luting faults, hairlines. Firing imperfection/bubble burst to ladies punting panel, right hand side.The cover has been restored, probably in three, with a replacement lion dog. Typical frits around rims, shoulder and some minor staining.Vase 2UV light inspected. with two drilled holes in the base. Some fluorescence along luting lines but doesn’t appear to be restored to upper body. Small three pointed star crack to shoulder interior, not visible to exterior.Base with one hole visible. No over spraying to exterior. Firing fault to shoulder. Section of rim re-stuck in two pieces, frits and 3cm scale chip to interior of rim, with associated short hairline confined to the rim.The cover with four small areas of the rim over-sprayed. Minor restoration to original lion dog. The long narrow table decorated in red, green, and gold lacquer over a black ground, the rectangular top with upright scroll ends decorated with a central mountainous river landscape panel, flanked by floriform panels of lotus scroll, within floral cartouche borders on a brocade pattern ground, supported by pairs of straight rectangular legs, joined by plain stretchers and a lobed panel, with floral decoration.Condition: With wear, chips, and lacquer flakes to the edges (mostly to the top panel), restorations to the four legs and touch-ups overall. A SHANG STYLE BRONZE RITUAL WINE CUP, ZHI, MING DYNASTYChina, Ming dynasty (1368 - 1644). The pear-shaped body supported on a spreading foot and rising to an everted rim, finely decorated around the waisted neck with a narrow band of chilong above archaic scroll between two-line borders as well as two bosses, the splayed hollow foot encircled by two bow-string bands. With a later wood stand and a fitted silk box. Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion. Fine, naturally grown patina with extensive malachite encrustation. Provenance: Norwegian private collection. Weight: 415 g (excl. stand) Dimensions: Height 14.3 cm (excl. stand)Zhi goblets served as drinking vessels. They were employed in important ritual performances aimed at paying homage to the ancestors. According to Chinese beliefs, the ancestors were deemed active participants in the life of their offspring, which they could positively influence if provided with the correct necessities for their own afterlife, see Jessica Rawson, 'The Power of Images: The Model Universe of the First Emperor and its Legacy', in Historical Research, no.75, 2002, pp. 123-154.
A LARGE PAINTING DEPICTING SHOULAO AND AN ATTENDANT, BY GU JIANLONG (1606-1687), DATED 1679 顧見龍(1606-1687)款《長壽仙芝》,1679年China. Ink and watercolors on paper. Depicting Shoulao holding a lingzhi fungus in his right hand, his face with a cheerful expression, dressed in fine robes with a floral hem, a jade pendant in the form of a ruyi cloud tied to his waist, followed by his attendant carrying his master's cane with attached gourd, the attendant also dressed in fine robes embellished with medallions of scrolling clouds, both standing in a rocky landscape below a gnarled pine tree backed by clouds, with rockwork issuing lingzhi in the foreground.Inscriptions: Upper left, inscribed 'The magical fungus of immortality', 'Painted in the autumn of the Year of Ji Wei (corresponding to 1679) in the manner of Tang Ziwei (also known as Tang Yin, 1470-1523)', 'Painted in the Studying Straw Hall of Deep Willow', and signed 'Yun Chen Gu Jianlong'. Two seals, 'Gu Jianlong Yin' and 'Yun Chen'. Provenance: From the collection of James Kedzie Penfield, and thence by descent in the same family. James Kedzie Penfield (1908-2004), after graduating from Stanford, joined a hand-picked team who traveled to China to work for the American Diplomatic Corps during the 1930s and 1940, where, according to his daughter, he spent the best years of his life. During his stay, he established friendships with local artists, including Zhang Daqian, one of the most famous Chinese painters of the 20th century, and was gifted a painting by him as a farewell present, which was sold at Woolley & Wallis on 1 July 2020, lot 15, for GBP 50,000. In 1954, James Penfield became the High Commissioner for Austria and was sent there to re-establish a neutral and democratic country.Condition: The painting with extensive wear, tears, creasing, losses, touch-ups, soiling, and stains, but overall displaying remarkably well despite obvious signs of age. Mounted and stabilized behind a solid wood frame with glass. A JADE 'DRAGON' PENDANT, XI, WARRING STATES PERIODJade. China, Eastern Zhou dynasty, Warring States period, 5th-3rd century BCOf flattened, arched, and tapering form, finely carved in openwork as a horned and winged dragon, the body neatly incised with subtle scroll and fine lines. The translucent stone of a pale green tone with darker specks.This curved dragon pendant, xi, is also referred to as a 'knot opener' or 'claw-shaped pendant'. The elongated silhouette of the dragon, with the head turned backwards and the mouth open toward the wing, matches that of a pair of similar but phoenix-shaped xi discovered in 1974 in a Western Han tomb at Dabaotai, Beijing. China, Late Eastern Zhou - Early Western Han, 4th-3rd century BCThe jade of a deep celadon color with white inclusions, incised on both sides with a simple cloud-like scroll pattern, except for a small concentric section towards the central hole of the disc.Similar bi have been found in the tombs of the kings of Zhong Shan Guo, published in Yang Boda, Chinese archaic jades from the Kwan collection, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong 1994 and in the tomb of the second kind of Nanyue, Zhao Mo in Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
