The interior of roiro with gold fundame edges.HEIGHT 7.5 cmCondition: Good condition with some wear, minor age cracks, small losses to inlays, little flaking to lacquer, the interior with traces of use.Provenance: French private collection.Bonsai is a Japanese version of the original traditional Chinese art penjing or penzai. Unlike penjing, which utilizes traditional techniques to produce entire natural sceneries in small pots that mimic the grandiose and shape of real life sceneries, the Japanese bonsai only attempts to produce small trees that mimic the shape of real life trees. It was during the Tang dynasty, when penjing was at its height, that the art was first introduced into Japan.Bonsai cultivation reached a high level of expertise during the Edo period. Bonsai dating to the 17th century have survived to the present. One of the oldest-known living bonsai trees, considered one of the National Treasures of Japan, can be seen in the Tokyo Imperial Palace collection. A five-needle pine (Pinus pentaphylla var. negishi) known as Sandai-Shogun-No Matsu is documented as having been cared for by Tokugawa Iemitsu. The tree is thought to be at least 500 years old and was trained as a bonsai by 1610.By the end of the 18th century, bonsai cultivation in Japan was becoming widespread and began to interest the general public. In the Tenmei era (1781-88), an exhibit of traditional dwarf potted pines began to be held every year in Kyoto. Connoisseurs from five provinces and neighboring areas would bring one or two plants each to the show in order to submit them to visitors for ranking.

Hence the versions of this subject that we can find in different museums, such as the one preserved in the collection of the Crystal Museum, Taichung, Taiwan, or the one preserved at the Memorial Museum of Xu Beihong, Beijing, China. A rare pair of Worcester junket dishes, circa 1758Of lobed circular form, with crisply moulded basket-weave grounds reserving three scroll-edged panels painted in blue with chinoiserie riverscapes, including a fisherman on an island, and a figure in a sampan, the border with floral sprigs, 23.1cm diam, one with workman's mark (2)Footnotes:This earliest shape of Worcester junket dish is more often painted with floral panels. Branyan, French and Sandon, Worcester Blue and White Porcelain (1989) record two single examples with Chinese landscape panels which they designated the 'Bamboo Pavilion' (I.B.23) and 'The Neighbours' (I.B.23A). Since publication, two further junket dishes have been noted, both with entirely different Chinese scenes in each of the panels. The present pair matches one of these. It is curious why the Worcester factory should have created so many totally different patterns with which to decorate these rare objects. An example with 'The Neighbours' was sold by Bonhams, 2 December 2009, lot 131.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
