TWO CHINESE BLANC DE CHINE FIGURES OF GUANYIN 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY One a group depicting Guanyin seated upon a rocky throne with two attendants by her side, supporting a child in her right arm, the other modelled as the Bodhisattva holding a scroll in her right hand, she stands tall upon a raised pedestal decorated in relief with lotus, 24.5cm and 39cm. (2) Provenance: from the estate of Anne Marie Wood, Warwickshire, acquired no later than the 1990s.
A JAPANESE SCROLL PAINTING BY NAKABAYASHI CHIKUTO (1776-1853), KAKEMONO EDO PERIOD, 18TH/19TH CENTURY Depicting an autumnal scene with a small fishing boat sailing on a lake, with tall reeds bending in the breeze and the silhouettes of mountains in the distance, two lines of calligraphy to the side including a poem describing the 'tranquil autumn scene with the shadow of a boat cast on a lake', signed Chikuto and with two red artist's seals, 55.5cm x 37.5cm. Provenance: a Spanish private collection, Madrid. Purchased from Sydney L. Moss Ltd, London, on 20th June 1997. A copy of the original invoice is available. Works by Nakabayashi Chikuto often depict quiet landscapes in the Nanga style imitating Chinese literati painting. He was also acclaimed during his career as a designer of illustrated books. Provenance: an English private collection, presented by the Chinese Medical Association on 13th August 1957. A LARGE CHINESE SPINACH-GREEN JADE MARRIAGE BOWL 18TH/19TH CENTURY The rounded sides carved to the exterior with a continuous lotus scroll, the two handles formed as pierced butterflies with their open wings resting on the slightly incurved mouthrim, each handle suspending a loose ring, the interior decorated in relief with a spray of peony and lingzhi, all raised on six short ruyi-head shaped feet, the green stone with black inclusions and areas of lighter and darker mottling, with a paper label for Spink & Son Ltd to the base, 30cm. A LARGE CHINESE HARDWOOD SCROLL TABLE C.1900 The frieze decorated in low relief with shou characters, melons, and various flowers including lotus, the spandrels carved in openwork with archaistic dragons, with four square-section legs terminating in ruyi-heads, 102cm x 254.5cm x 52.5cm. Provenance: from the collection of Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Baronet (1841-1915) and thence by descent. Sir Thomas Jackson, 1st Baronet (1841-1915) was the third Chief Manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and his influence on the company was so notable that he became known as the bank's 'Great Architect'. He was also one of the founding members of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Born in County Leitrim, Ireland, Jackson joined the Belfast branch of the Bank of Ireland at age nineteen before accepting a position in East Asia with Agra and Masterman's Bank five years later. In 1866, he joined HSBC, which had only been established the previous year. Jackson was quickly promoted to the position of an accountant in Shanghai, and he later spent several years working in Japan as the manager of the bank's Yokohama office. At the early age of 35, he was appointed as Chief Manager of HSBC and, under his direction, the company became the leading bank in Asia. After a successful career in Hong Kong, Jackson returned to the UK in 1891, taking charge of the company's office in London. He was knighted in 1899 and three years later he retired and received the additional title of Baronet. In 1906, a statue of Sir Thomas Jackson was unveiled in recognition of his services both to HSBC and Hong Kong. His statue still stands in Statue Square in front of the bank's Hong Kong headquarters. Jackson Road in Hong Kong was also named after him. A pair of Chinese famille rose jardinières and stands, Republic period (1912-1949), each of cylindrical form on an inverted circular foot, painted with a continuous scene of five boys in a garden, all holding objects symbolic of scholarly success and good fortune, two with ruyi sceptres, one carrying a spear tied with a ribbon suspending a chime, one with a vase with a stalk of grain and a lantern, and another holding a lantern in the shape of a fish, all between a dense floral scroll and a false gadroon and key fret border, the lobed flared rim enamelled with scrolling flowers in blue, the base with a four-character mark lingzhi chengxiang (the qilin's footprints foretell good fortune) in iron red, 19.2cm diameter, the stands similarly decorated with branches of peaches, pomegranates and finger citrons to the undersides, which represent the 'Three Abundances' of longevity, blessings and abundance of sons, 17.9cm diameter (4) The decoration on these jardinières is filled with symbols of posterity. The five boys represent the sons of Dou Yujun, all of whom achieved exceptional success and were known as the 'five dragons'. The mark lingzhi chengxiang is an ancient greeting used to wish couples the birth of a son and often found on pieces decorated with boys and qilin . The flap edged with infantry pattern silver lace with crimson stripe, and mounted with a large silvered Maltese cross badge, its centre bearing the Chinese Dragon on a red and white enamel ground, regimental title scroll beneath. A small chip to the white enamel of the badge centre, otherwise GC.
