A SILVERED AND GILT BRONZE 'SHOULAO AND DEER' INCENSE BURNER, QING DYNASTY 清代鎏金鎏銀壽老仙鹿香爐China, 17th-18th century. Well modeled, with the god of longevity shown holding a scroll while seated atop a separately cast recumbent stag with removable gilt antlers. Shoulao's wide sleeve is pierced to let out the smoke rising from within the deer's hollowed back. The interior of the figure is set with a short peg to fit into a pierced aperture on the deer.Provenance: From a private collection on 700 Park Avenue, Manhattan, New York, USA. Condition: Good condition with some old wear and expected casting irregularities, tarnishing to silver, light scratches, tiny nicks, small dents, minute touchups to the gilding of the antlers.Weight: 3,269 gDimensions: Height 25 cm, Length 27 cm During the Qing Dynasty in China, incense burners served not only functional purposes but were also commissioned as decorative objects with deep symbolic significance. These burners often took the form of auspicious animals or figures, reflecting the cultural beliefs and aspirations of the time.Shoulao held great importance in Chinese culture as he represented the desire for longevity and good health. His portrayal with a large head symbolized wisdom, while his long beard signified old age. It was believed that by venerating Shoulao and leading a virtuous and balanced life, individuals could attain longevity and even immortality.Deer are associated with the Daoist concept of immortality due to their believed exceptional lifespan. This led to deer becoming symbolic representations of the wish for a long and prosperous life. In Chinese mythology, they were often depicted as messengers of immortals, possessing magical abilities.Together, Shoulao and the deer exemplify the aspirations for longevity and good fortune.Literature comparison:See the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum for a closely related group of figural censers that show immortals astride various creatures, particularly accession nos. A THANGKA OF EKADASHAMUKHA AVALOKITESHVARA, EASTERN TIBET OR YUNNAN, 17TH -18TH CENTURY, CIRCLE OF CHOYING DORJE (1604-1674) 西藏東部或雲南十七至十八世紀十一面觀音唐卡Expert's note: In 1645, the Tenth Karmapa, Choying Dorje (1604-1674), fled Tibet, eventually taking refuge in the city of Lijiang (Yunnan province) until his death. There, according to his biographies, he created a copy of a famous set of silk arhat paintings kept at Gangkar monastery in Sichuan province, called the Drakthokma Arhats (Arhats atop Rocks). The eccentric style in which these copies were executed shares some characteristics with the present work. Compared to most Tibetan thangkas, both have a strong Chinese aesthetic, adopting not only traditional figural and floral elements, but also Chinese brushwork techniques and the medium of monochromatic ink on silk, with only few pale pigments added to the present work for accentuation. In fluid lines, this remarkable painting creates a dynamic image of the eleven-headed and eight-armed deity standing in samabhanga atop a lotus dais. His principal hands are clasped together in anjali mudra, the secondary hands radiate around him, holding the dharma wheel, a water vessel, a mala (prayer beads), a lotus blossom, and a bow and arrow, and one held out in varada mudra. He is wearing a layered dhoti cascading in graceful folds as well as a billowing scarf draped over both shoulders, and richly adorned with fine jewelry.Black ink and pigment on cloth, with an ancient silk brocade frame, mounted as a hanging scroll with a wood handle.Provenance: From an old private collection in Budapest, Hungary, acquired during the first half of the 20th century. Condition: Good condition with some wear, soiling, creases and small losses. Some tears and losses to the mounting. The ink is still crisp, the pigments are intentionally pale.Dimensions: Image size 31.2 x 24.5 cm, Size incl. mounting 66.9 x 37.1 cmAvalokiteshvara is backed by a red mandorla with rainbow-colored borders and flanked in the lower register by Green and White Tara seated on lotus thrones, surrounded by a verdant mountainous landscape with large lotus and peony blossoms, and thick swirling clouds beneath the moon and sun.The bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig) is the patron deity of Tibet, embodying the compassion of all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times. In the standing form, Ekadashamukha Avalokiteshvara (Eleven faced Avalokiteshvara) is closely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of abundance and fortune.

The Buddha's expression is peaceful and serene, lying on his right side with his hand propping up his head, exposing the wheel of dharma engraved on his palm. Below the Buddha are two scenes depicting the arrival of the aged Buddha in Kushinagara, where he died. The upper right corner depicts the cremation of the deceased Buddha, and the upper left scene depicts the veneration of his ashes.Provenance: From an old private collection in Germany, where it was displayed as the centerpiece of the collection.Condition: Very good condition with little wear, light creasing, and minor soiling. The brocade mounting with minor discoloration and small tears.Dimensions: Image size 70 x 44 cm, Size incl. brocade mounting 134.5 x 73.5 cm Distemper and gold on cloth, with a silk brocade frame and mounted as a hanging scroll with metal openwork fittings. The death of the Buddha, also known as the Buddha's Parinirvana referring to the Buddha's enlightenment after death, has been depicted widely in Buddhist iconography and is accounted in the Mahaparinirvana sutra. According to Buddhist tradition, the Buddha died in Kushinagara, Northern India, with the traditional dates of Buddha's life from 566-486 BC. After his death, the Buddha's body was cremated and distributed among his followers. The stupas that guarded his remains became important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists. The Mahaparinirvaṇa sutra is one of the most important Buddhist scriptures in China and Tibet, and it relates the events surrounding the Buddha's death. The precise date of origin of this text is uncertain, but its early form may have developed in or by the second century CE. The original Sanskrit text is not extant except for a small number of fragments, but it survives in Chinese and Tibetan translation. As the Mongols were fervent followers of Tibetan-style Buddhism, Kangxi ordered the construction of various Tibetan-style Buddhist temples ordered around the axis of Qingchui. Under the reign of his grandson, the Qianlong Emperor, the site was expanded massively, with the layout of the site mirroring the Buddhist cosmology of a mandala. The central focus of worship for many of these temples were large gilt-lacquered wood sculptures, including the 22-meter-high figure of Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara at the Puning Temple. Most similar to the present work are three massive figures of Buddhas located in the Zongyin Hall, constructed in 1766, see Buddhist Art from Rehol: Tibetan Buddhist Images and Ritual Objects from the Qing Dynasty Summer Palace at Chengde, Taipei, 1999, p.29. Characteristic of many of these lacquered sculptures was the deeply colored gilding, almost in imitation of patinated gilt-bronze, applied over thick red or black lacquer. A smaller dry lacquer figure of related modelling in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York is published by Alan Priest, Chinese Sculptures in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1944, pl. CVVVI, with an inscribed paper label scroll contained in an interior cavity dating to the 9th year of the Yongle reign, corresponding to 1411.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
