A Chinese scroll painting by Fang Yuejuan , Qing Dynasty, Gathering in the Orchid Pavilion , ink and colour on silk, signed and inscribed, approximately 192cm x 41.5cm The scene depicts the Gathering in the Orchid Pavilion (Lanting), which was then documented by Wang Xizhi in his renowned calligraphy work Lantingji Xu: A Spring Purification Ceremony was held at Lanting, Kuaiji Prefecture where Wang Xizhi was appointed as the governor at the time. During the event, many literati gathered along the banks of a coursing stream and engaged in a drinking contest - cups of wine were drifting down from the upstream, and whenever a cup stopped in front of a guest, he had to compose a poem or otherwise drink the wine.
