He was made a beizi (earl) in the eighth year of the Yongzheng era (1730), and soon became a beile (marquis). CHINESE INTEREST: An early 20th century Chinese three-piece oval tea set comprising tea pot, milk jug & sugar bowl with a detachable cover, each vertically lobed & profusely decorated with Chinese characters, figures in native scenes, prunus & bamboo, vacant shield cartouches, by Tuckchang, Hong Kong c.1928*, together with a Chinese lacquered writing box, a silk haning scroll, a pair of Chinese gold cufflinks & a Chinese gold ring, each decorated with a character, and a photocopy of two Newspaper cuttings; the tea pot 6" (15 cms) high; the box 17.75" (45 cms) wide; the scroll 35" (89 cms) wide; 40.7 oz silver; 15.2 grams gold *All of the above items belonged to Captain W.H. Sparke of the West River Steamer San Nam Hoi, whose ship was attached by pirates on 17th January 1928. Due to the gallant efforts of the Captain and his Chief engineer, Mr. M.F. Houghton in resisting the attack, they managed to save not only the lives of all the Chinese passengers, but they saved the ship as well. Captain Sparke was presented with the above tea set and an inlaid & mounted blackwood tray (which was inscribed & now sadly lost) by the Nam Hoi, Kau Kong Chamber of Commerce & passengers of the San Nam Hoi. Captain Sparke was also presented with the above silk scroll embroidered with sentiments. Good late C19th Chinese rosewood & mother-of-pearl inlaid centre table, of serpentine outline, the top inlaid with flowering bamboo and a prunus tree, the table with a carved frieze and cabriole legs on scroll feet, 106 cm long x 76 cm high. Scratches to the wood, old repairs, fair condition
A Chinese celadon jade belt clasp, 20th century, carved each side with a shou medallion and taotie style masks, raised on a gold filigree stand, detailed 14K, in the form of a section of bamboo on scroll supports, the jade applied with a seated panda and bamboo, weight of gold stand 53.6 gms, stamped red seal mark to jade, jade 7.5cm.diameter.
