Number 246 of only 390 allocated to the UK and, at 41,876 miles, this lovely, original example is surely one of the lowest mileage and best-preserved examples currently available. It’s the early 1990s and the 1.8-litre Clio 16v is locked in combat for hot-hatch glory with the ageing Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9. It’s a better car by many objective criteria, but not a convincingly faster one and, in the eyes of many, the GTi still holds the crown. It took a truly special car to convincingly wrestle supremacy away from Peugeot, to really bury the old-timer and to refine the class in the process. That car was the Clio Williams.Sold with the compelling marketing strategy of an F1 team association (celebrating Alain Prost's fourth F1 title in 1993 with Williams, which used Renault engines at the time), the Williams was actually an 'homologation special' in the familiar mould. It was built because RenaultSport wanted to go rallying and the class maximum displacement stood at 2.0-litres. Given this was still the era of homologation into Classes A and N, Renault simply had to build 2,500 road cars to qualify, although it would eventually build many more. The initial production run of the Clio Williams was limited to just 5,400 examples, of which only 390 arrived in the UK.Naturally, RenaultSport did a thorough job. The suspension used a reinforced front subframe borrowed from the Clio Cup racer, plus uprated springs, dampers, rear torsion arms and thicker anti-roll bars. The track was increased by 34mm and the 7J Speedline alloys were half-an-inch wider than the 16v’s and distinctively gold. The gearbox was stronger, too, with revised ratios. There was just one exterior colour offered for the first generation of Williams – ‘449’ Metallic Sports Blue – and the cumulative effect of body (already blistered of arch, front, and rear, and bulging of bonnet from the 16v), paint and those golden wheels was as close to hot-hatch perfection as many felt it was possible to get. It's a small car with a wheel pushed to the very extremity of each corner; a little shorter, slightly wider, and significantly lower than a Clio 172 or 182.Codenamed ‘F7R’ and developed from the 16v’s 137bhp F7P unit, the new engine featured a longer stroke and bigger bore size and benefitted from a stronger crankshaft (borrowed from the diesel Clio) plus new pistons, camshafts and conrods, with bigger valves and a lightweight exhaust manifold. Output was now 148bhp at 6,100rpm and 126lb/ft at 4,500rpm, not enormous by today's standards but 85% of the torque was available from 2,500rpm and the car only weighed 981kg. The original Clio Williams (‘Phase 1’) was the lightest incarnation of model, lacking the electrics necessary for the sunroof or the mirrors, and was the only one to support a metal plaque stating the build number. The factory specification included central locking, electric windows, and blue-faced instrument dials with three co-ordinating blue auxiliary read-outs atop the centre console displaying the oil level, temperature and pressure – all very purposeful.The car presented here is a 1994 Renault Clio Williams, #0264 of the original production run known as ‘Phase 1’. It was one of only 390 examples allocated to the UK and was delivered new by Renault main dealer, Taylor & Ackroyd of Halifax, in February 1994. It was pre-registered by Renault with zero mileage covered and was purchased new, along with a second example, by Clifton Garage of York. It was initially registered in the company’s name (up until 1998), with all servicing carried out 'in-house' before being purchased from his company and registered personally (V5C records confirms). This owner was also the proprietor of a Hyundai dealership in York, which then offered #0264 for sale and it was sold to its second private owner (original sale invoice confirms) in 1998. The new owner then had a Gemini alarm/immobiliser fitted, which is the only non-Renault part on the whole car.#0264 was driven and maintained by him, accompanied by all invoices up until 2005, when it went into a personal garage, where it stayed until 2017. During this period the car was regularly checked and run-up and, in 2017, it was returned to the road with the only work required to pass an MOT being a new steering rack and brake callipers. For the next five years or so it was only used occasionally covering around 1,000 miles per year and not having had an MOT advisory since. In December 2021, the clutch and timing-belt were replaced, along with routine full service. The indicated mileage at the time of cataloguing was 41,876.It's accompanied by the original book-pack, including the service booklet, an original PDI inspection sheet, numerous maintenance receipts and a huge file of paperwork to verify all the above, with all pre-2005 MOT Certificates present to verify the mileage.Small, but important, details like the correct coolant having always been used, the original stereo still present (and in full working-order), the suit-carrier parcel shelf remaining in A1 condition and the heat shields still being original, all pay testimony to the car’s diligent ownership and quality of condition. A stunning example of the desirable S1. Restored to a high standard and showing only 43,692 miles.The much-revered Escort RS Turbo S1 was supplied in the distinctive Diamond White body colour only. The engine utilised was a 1600 CVH unit modified to suit the higher loads and the application of a turbocharger, whilst also benefiting from computerised fuel injection and engine management incorporating boost control, producing a healthy 132bhp. It was the first front-wheel drive road car in the world to use a compact viscous-coupling design LSD instead of a normal mechanical LSD, which greatly improved cornering and drivability.Aesthetically, the RS Turbo was given a distinctive sporty appearance with a body-coloured front grille, bumpers and aerodynamic aids. The interior was trimmed in a combination of Monza and Cashmere fabrics and Recaro LS bucket seats were fitted as standard. Production was limited to only 5,000 examples and many were modified in period for racing and/or crashed.On offer here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive example finished, naturally, in Diamond White that was showing just 43,692 miles at the time of cataloguing. C449 EBH has formed part of our vendor's private Ford Collection for the past few years and it's accompanied by an impressive history file detailing much of the car's life. There is simply too much to list here, so we recommend all interested parties come and see this super S1 and inspect the history file for themselves.The car was restored some years ago to a very good standard and still presents really well in the metal today. Guided very sensibly, considering the low mileage and quality on offer, this is a particularly good example and we welcome any inspection.With Sierras, Escorts and now the inevitable Focus all seeing substantial increases in value in recent years, the market for Performance Fords from this period never seems to cool down, particularly when they are from single ownership. A fabulous example of Giorgetto Giugiaro's stylish and timeless design superbly recreated as the ultimate road-going Giulia Sprint GT.During the dark days of ‘lockdown’ in 2020, our intrepid European client, a gentleman of mature years and great taste, decided to contact the UK-based Alfaholics team to establish the likely lead time of one of their amazing GTA-R, 105-Series individual creations. Having established this could take a number of years, he decided to embark on a different route and managed to source in Germany an excellent, partly restored but unfinished 1965 ‘step-front’ Giulia Sprint GT as a donor car for €40,500.He then commissioned highly-respected Alfa specialist, Bas Aalberts of ‘BAS Auto Service’ of Lichtenvoorde in the Netherlands, to set about completely stripping and rebuilding the car to his ultimate road-going specification, very much in the style of Alfaholics’ much admired R-Type, but with a number of bespoke modifications to suit his personal requirements.Parts were sourced from the best specialists around Europe, including Alfaholics in the UK, Porsche spec leather, Tillet seats, and a Springall steering wheel in order to create the ultimate Giulia Sprint finished as he wanted it. All mechanical work was completed by BAS, however, the chassis stiffening, paintwork and the interior trim were outsourced to local Dutch specialists.The car was refinished in its original Bluette (AR506) with a full blue Porsche leather interior and looks extremely smart in the metal, totally underplaying the fantastic performance available from the freshly-built, bespoke 2,000cc Alfa 155 Twin-Spark engine. This special unit is on mappable fuel-injection with Jenvey ‘Heritage’ throttle bodies, very similar to the specification of the Alfaholics’ unit in their GTA-R, and generates 210bhp which, in a car weighing only 930kg, offers truly outstanding performance.All invoices for the build are included in the comprehensive history file and, when totalled, suggest that the overall build cost will have been close to €200,000, however, the quality of the workmanship and attention to detail can clearly be seen in our images. This project took more than a year to complete and the sparkling little Alfa was handed over to its excited owner in September 2021. He was totally delighted and set about the running-in process with care, prior to trailering it to Goodwood for a few enthusiastic laps which were recorded on video for posterity. A Cromwellian period Doglock Musketoon, the 63 cm two-stage barrel with flared muzzle and proof marks, flintlock action with doglock, fully stocked (refurbished), overall length 100 cm, with ramrod QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Pembroke Fine Arms and formerly from a private collection. This dates from around 1640 and has a second English lock with early London Gunmaker's view mark identified as circa 1640 from Howard Blackmore's excellent book British Military Firearms 1650-1850. Originally this would have had a thick wrist but this has been reshaped about a hundred years later, maybe as early as 1720 and is now similar to the more familiar "Brown Bess". The forend has also been repaired in the distant past and the horn tipped ramrod has been added later (probably 18th Century). The gun has been used and remodelled to suit both fashion and practicality for at least a hundred years since it was first made. I've personally never seen such an early English gun in private ownership, most are held in museums. See Baxter ( Arms and Armour Press 1970) for more information. Pembroke Fine Arms label refers.

McKay which he received on his return from New York, 'I have skimmed through the book and it looks as though it will be a gold mine of information. A fine and large presentation kukri, fullered blade 15 in., brass mounted polished horn hilt with small ring bolt to the pommel; scabbard almost entirely enclosed by silver repousse mountings comprising openwork locket with panels of profuse scrolling foliage, applied initials 'A. N. O.' within a border, long chape of swollen form with nested borders of foliate scrolls, and edge binding embossed en suit; the locket with pendant roundel set with a turquoise cabochon to the centre and linked to a band of silver braid that encircles the scabbard, the back with pockets accommodating two smaller knives and a further vacant pocket.

A George V Scottish Silver Vase, by William Hamilton and Son, Edinburgh, 1921 probably inspired by the Traprain Law treasure, baluster and with beaded foot23.5cm high, 15oz 18dwt, 495grThe Traprain Law treasure is the largest hoard of Roman hacksilver as yet discovered. It was found in East Lothian in 1919 and sent to the Edinburgh silversmiths Brook and Son to be restored. Brook and Son also made copies, as did other silversmiths, of pieces from the Hoard. The copies were usually made to suit contemporary tastes and often had a beaded border like that on the present vase. The most likely inspiration is an item, described as a flagon, which is now in the collection of the National Museum of Scotland (X.GVA.1). It is of similar shape, though decorated with biblical scenes.Fully marked underneath. The marks are clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use.
