‘It can’t be that my life’s work is destroyed by the French’ RIEFENSTAHL LENI: (1902-2003) German film director. A significant and interesting correspondence collection comprising two A.Ls.S. and nine T.Ls.S. (several with holograph additions), Leni Riefenstahl, sixteen pages (total), 4to, various places (Munich etc.), January 1952 - December 1958, the majority to Christian Bourcier de Carbon (and, indirectly, Henri Langlois), in German. Riefenstahl writes on a variety of subjects, including her work and the efforts she made to recover her films reels, which had been confiscated by the French government at the end of World War II and retained at the Cinematheque Française, thanking De Carbon for supporting her in the return of her films, explaining that she intends to go to Paris personally 'as soon as possible to bring about the handover there and I would be happy if I could ask for your help. In order to obtain my French entry permit, it is necessary for me to receive an official invitation….from you as soon as possible (by express) so that I can receive my entry visa from the French consulate in Munich in a few days' (26th January 1952), further stating, in part, 'Many weeks have now passed since my stay in Paris and unfortunately the return of my material to the Austrian Embassy has still not become a fact…..If all these efforts are unsuccessful, then the last resort I see is either a civil suit against Monsieur Petitjean, a French film officer who at the time brought the material to France without permission and without a mandate from the French military government, or that I have to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice in The Hague' (19th March 1952), 'On 4th April I finally have my world premiere of 'Blauen Licht' in Munich….I wanted to go to Kitzbuhel over Easter and from there to Breuil to test the ski area there for my film 'Die roten Teufel'' (1st April 1952), 'Unfortunately I haven't received any sign of life from you since we were last together in Munich and wonder whether you are in Paris and whether you are aware of the outrageous article about me in the magazine 'Samedi Soir' of 10th May 1952. This article took over the pictures of the Munich 'Revue', made the same claims and published more fictional and forged Streicher letters. As a result, the already officially confirmed transfer of my films to the Austrian Embassy was thwarted at the very last hour…..I ask you to treat the contents of this letter as confidential. It is only intended to show you the base means by which my enemies in France are trying to prevent the return of my property. This new setback has made my current situation even more difficult, but I hope to be able to resolve the matter through a lawsuit. For this process I now need an absolutely flawless translation of the article from 'Samedi Soir' and I would be particularly grateful if you would have the same made, as I have no money to pay for the translation…..I will give you back your expenses after the case has been won…..My lawyer will ask the newspaper 'Samedi Soir' to bring a correction. If the newspaper does not do this, I will be forced to sue 'Samedi Soir' and again I would like your advice on which French lawyer I should hire?' (1st June 1952), 'Above all, I would like to tell you that your faith and the trust you have placed in me have given me a lot of strength. On the day of your visit in Munich I was really completely devastated by the mean slanders of the 'Revue'. Your encouragement helped me a lot. The next day I flew to Berlin and had the strength to face a big public hearing in Berlin to refute all allegations against me, although the chairman of the court was a Jew, he possessed the necessary objectivity to conduct the proceedings fairly, I was acquitted on all counts and fully rehabilitated. This was a great victory and will also help me to fend off further attacks. For your information I am enclosing a newspaper report from which you can see the means by which an attempt was made to destroy me. I am also enclosing the copy of the Berlin verdict, which is of particular value because the most severe verdicts are pronounced in Berlin. As a result of this Berlin verdict, I am now in a position to sue the illustrated magazine 'Revue' for defamation and professional damage. So I will once again have to endure a lawsuit, but I am convinced that I will win it and then the way for my future work will be free….I wrote to Mr. Borst today to find out how far my 'Tiefland' affair has progressed…..I cannot understand why the handover has still not taken place. If you are still in Paris, I would be indebted to you if you would ask Mr. Borst, or even better, Mr. Langlois directly, when the handover will take place, It can't be that my life's work is destroyed by the French' (5th June 1952), 'It has been a long time since we last spoke. In the meantime my 'Tiefland' film has begun in Germany and Austria with a very strong response from the press and so far I am very satisfied with the artistic success. If you don't have the opportunity to see it in a cinema somewhere, it will be my great pleasure to show you the film on your next visit to Munich. Only now can I fully immerse myself in the realisation of my ski film 'Die roten Teufel'…..I would now be interested, dear Mr. de Carbon, whether you are still interested in any way in co-financing the film…..I think it's going to be big business and it's worth investing capital in, It would also make the work easier because, if francs are available to me, I could finance French skiers and workers and possibly also some outdoor shots in French territory' (9th June 1954), the later letter of 1958 regarding a proposed ballet based on Das blaue Licht (1932, 'The Blue Light') in which Riefenstahl had appeared as an actress in the role of Junta, with Rosella Hightower suggested for the same role, Riefenstahl asking 'Is this prima ballerina a household name?'. Together with a few associated carbon copies of letters, two original envelopes, a small series of handwritten notes by Riefenstahl, and several French newspaper articles relating to the director. Some light overall age wear and a few letters with small tears and creasing to the edges, G to generally VG, Sml. Qty.Christian Bourcier de Carbon (1912-?) French civil and industrial engineer who invented the de Carbon hydraulic shock absorber in 1953, also establishing the De Carbon Company in the same year.Henri Langlois (1914-1977) French film archivist and cinephile, a pioneer of film preservation and co-founder of the Cinematheque Française.Towards the end of World War II the French government confiscated all of Riefenstahl's editing equipment, along with the production reels of Tiefland. After years of legal wrangling, these were returned to her, but the French government had reportedly damaged some of the film stock whilst trying to develop and edit it, with a few key scenes missing. Riefenstahl edited and dubbed the remaining material and Tiefland premiered in Stuttgart in 1954, however it was denied entry into the Cannes Film Festival. In the 1950s and 1960s the director attempted to make many other films, but was continually met with resistance, public protests and sharp criticism. Although both film professionals and investors were willing to support her work, most of the projects she attempted were stopped owing to ever-renewed and highly negative publicity about her past work in Germany, and Tiefland would subsequently remain as her last feature film.

DELIBES LEO: (1836-1891) French Romantic composer, best known for his operas and ballets. A.L.S., Leo Delibes, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 26th March n.y. (1889), to a friend, in French. The composer announces 'C'est decide. Nous prenons le Piano no.5 (no.95 673) dans les conditions convenues hier entre nous' (Translation: 'It's decided. We take Piano no.5 (no.95 673) under the conditions agreed yesterday between us') and continues 'Il reste entendum si vous le voulez bien, que nous pourrons le changer pour un autre du meme prix et du meme modele, dans la cas ou la couleur du bois ne conviendrait pas a l'ameublement ou si le son ne produisait pas un bon effet dans le salon ou il sera place' (Translation: 'It remains understood, if you wish, that we can change it for another of the same price and the same model, in the event that the colour of the wood does not suit the furnishings or if the sound does not produce a good effect in the salon where it will be placed') further asking his correspondent to make the revisions to the piano, and its chords, so that it can be delivered on Saturday 30th, or at the very latest Monday, 1st April. Delibes concludes by providing his correspondent with the new address of the Cercle de l'union artistique and the name of the secretary. ‘I don’t know yet if he likes these paintings, he hasn’t said a word’  PISSARRO CAMILLE: (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter. A good A.L.S., C. Pissarro, two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), 8vo, Paris, 6th September 1891, to his wife ('Ma chere Julie'), in French. It is agreed that Mr. Gallimard should write to Geffroy, who is absent, to ask him to write a story that Lucien will illustrate with colour engravings and the like. It will be very artistic and will suit perfectly…..so it's one thing arranged…..he will therefore be able to make a book whose text will be engraved on wood and illustrated with colour engravings in water, which has never been done; I hope that this book will do Lucien great good. It's an exceptional chance to have found this business'). Pissarro further remarks 'J'ai porte 5 tableaux chez Durand Ruel, j'attends une reponse, je ne sais encore si ces toiles lui plaisent il n'a pas souffle un mot' (Translation: 'I took 5 paintings to Durand Ruel, I'm waiting for an answer, I don't know yet if he likes these paintings, he hasn't said a word'). CAILLEBOTTE GUSTAVE: (1848-1894) French painter associated with the Impressionists. A.L.S., G Caillebotte, one page, small 8vo, Petit Gennevilliers, n.d. I had a lousy time of course') and asks Monet to come and see him, in a postscript adding 'Martial prepare une petite balade en vapeur pour mercredi. Il va jusqu'a la Roche. Cela ferait peut-etre notre affaire' (Translation: 'Martial is preparing a little steam ride for Wednesday. He goes as far as La Roche. Maybe that would suit us'). HUBER FRANCOIS: (1750-1831) Swiss entomologist who specialised in honeybees. A fine L.S., Francois Huber, three pages, 4to, Ouchy, Lausanne, 11th June 1814, to Georges Cuvier, in French. Huber apologises for the circumstances which did not allow him to reply earlier to his correspondent's letter, adding that he is 'Penetre de reconnaissance pour la faveur que l'institut de France a deigne m'accorder ca ete pour moi un veritable vhagrin d'etre condamne au silence dans cette occasion, et de ne pouvoir vous dire combien j'en ai ete touche' (Translation: 'Penetrated with gratitude for the favour that the Institut de France has deigned to grant me, it is a real sorrow for me to be condemned to silence on this occasion, and not to be able to tell you how touched I was'). Without ceasing to concern myself with natural history, which has been the study and the charm of my whole life, I have for some years returned to that of mathematics to try to read and hear the works of your famous colleagues, and not to be entirely excluded from what is most interesting and most certain in human knowledge. By means of characters and palpable signs which I owe to the zeal of my son for all that can be useful to me, I have found nothing up to now in this new study, which should have made me regret the time that I devoted to it: I am only sorry not to have deviated sooner, that an occupation where the aid of the eyes was not absolutely necessary was precisely that which could best suit me. I doubtless have neither the pretension nor the slightest hope of making any discovery on a road so worthily travelled and of never having anything except some miracle to teach my masters. But if in the course of my research on bees I have the good fortune to perceive some new trait in their history…….I read Sir with the greatest interest your beautiful and astonishing research on fossil bones, allow me to take this opportunity to thank you for the infinite pleasure that I took in this reading and to ask you to kindly put me among your most sincere admirers. I will not finish this letter, Sir, without telling you how grateful we were for the welcome full of indulgence and kindness which the scholars and naturalists gave my son during his stay in Paris, his parents will always keep a precious memory') and in a postscript remarks 'Lorsque la seconde edition de mon livre sur les Abeilles paraitra je vous prierai Monsieur d'en offrir un exemplaire de ma part a l'Institut et je prendrai aussi la liberte de vous offrir un en le recommandant a votre indulgence' (Translation: 'When the second edition of my book on bees appears, I will ask you, Sir, to offer a copy from me to the Institute and I will also take the liberty of offering you one, recommending it to your indulgence'). With address panel to the verso of the final page, bearing the remnants of a red wax seal (small area of paper loss and tear where originally broken). A letter of excellent association and content, not least for its references to bees and the blindness which afflicted Huber. Some light age wear and a few minor tears to the edges, about VG

‘Russia is in a dreadful state just now and the revolution has played the devil with the army’  WAVELL ARCHIBALD: (1883-1950) British Field Marshal who served in both World War I and World War II, later becoming the Viceroy and Governor-General of India (1943-47). A.L.S., A. P. Wavell, four pages, 8vo, Cranborne, Salisbury, 16th June 1912, to Sergeant Major Johnstone. Wavell sends his congratulations to his correspondent on their promotion, and also thanks him for their letter and photographs of the regiment at the Durbar, commenting 'I heard the battalion did splendidly at Delhi and saw it for myself in the Durbar cinematograph pictures in a theatre in London, The regiment and particularly the guard of honour came out very well, and received a lot of applause from the audience. They looked extraordinarily smart and handled their arms wonderfully well' and also writing of his own work at the War Office ('It doesn't suit me very well living in London, doing office work, and getting little exercise') and previous post in Russia, 'I had a fairly good time in Russia, it is a very interesting country but it was such hard work learning the language…..that I got very tired of it. The best fun I had was 10 days manoeuvres with a Russian corps. Their men are very good, fine physique, well disciplined and very good marchers but stupid and uneducated. The officers are not very good, though very nice people'. Together with a second A.L.S., A. P. Wavell, three pages, 8vo, Cranborne, Salisbury, 18th June 1917, to Johnstone. Wavell reports on his recent military activities, 'They wired from Mesopotamia last October to ask for me to go out there to the battalion and I was very anxious to get back, but they wouldn't let me go from France. I was not far off from Mesopotamia however a short time ago, as I was sent out to the Caucasus last November as military attaché to the Russian army there…..I didn't want to go at all and was very glad to get back. Russia is in a dreadful state just now and the revolution has played the devil with the army', adding that he expects to return to France shortly, and would like to get command of a battalion, and also briefly referring to mutual comrades. Two letters of good content. Some light age wear and a few neat splits at the edges of folds, otherwise about VG, 2 In 1911 Wavell spent a year as a military observer with the Russian Army and in 1912 became a General Staff Officer in the Russian section of the War Office. After visiting manoeuvres at Kiev in the summer of 1913, Wavell was arrested at the Russo-Polish border as a suspected spy, following a search of his Moscow hotel room by the secret police, but managed to remove from his papers an incriminating document listing information wanted by the War Office. In October 1916 Wavell was made an acting Lieutenant-Colonel and assigned as liaison officer to the Russian Army in the Caucasus. In June 1917 he was promoted to brevet Lieutenant-Colonel and continued to work as liaison officer with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force headquarters.
