After training at Ipswich School of Art and the Royal College of Art, under tutors including Colin Moss, Pif Fortin, Carel Weight, Ruskin Spear and Ceri Richards, Hagger became the studio assistant to William Scott and exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions in Piccadilly and the Kings Road. In London, Hagger enjoyed considerable critical success, holding numerous solo exhibitions at the Bramante Galleries and Thackery Gallery and he exhibited with the Royal Academy throughout the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. Typical of Hagger’s work both in style and subject, the present lots demonstrate Hagger’s atmospheric and characteristically restrained and atmospherically tempered palette, punctuated by unexpected flashes of colour. Describing his practice, Hagger wrote, ‘I have always been interested in Urban landscape and seascape. This has been the subject matter of my work for most of my life… although almost photographic in concept I try to base them on sound principle of abstract design. An important part of the paintings are the figures which are stylised and simplified to suit the painting in question’.

Kosme Baraño Letamendia, Ed. BBV, Bilbao 1998.Measurements: 50 x 65 cm; 75 x 88 cm (frame). This series is made up of a set of one hundred and fifty-six prints from as many copperplates that Picasso engraved when he was over ninety years old. The works reveal his old age through an iconography that never fails to show an elderly Picasso. The prints do not provide an overall view, but they all have in common a retrospective look at the artist's life and work, and a nod to his visual memory. Thus we can glimpse the theme of the circus, to which Picasso was a regular in his youth, the female nude, with images of brothels, or his debt to painters for whom he felt admiration. The creation of Suite 156 was structured in three stages. From January to 25 May 1970, Picasso engraved more than fifty copper plates. In the second stage, between 25 February and 16 June of the following year, he made nearly a hundred plates, including thirty-eight dedicated to the image of Degas. Finally, in March 1972, he produced three more copperplates, two of them for Suite 156. Of this series, printed in its entirety by the brothers Piero and Aldo Crommelynck, fifty numbered copies were printed. The only three complete series of Suite 156 in existence are in the Musée Picasso in Paris, in a private collection and in the Bancaixa Foundation. The creator of Cubism together with Braque, Picasso's painting marked a turning point in the history of art. He began his studies in 1895 at the Provincial School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and only two years later he held his first solo exhibition at the café "Els Quatre Gats". After several short stays in Paris, Picasso settled permanently in the French capital in 1904. After his blue and pink periods in the early years of the century, the painter began his geometrical experiments in 1906, during a stay in Lérida. A year later he began to paint "Les Demoiselles de la Rue Avinyó", and in 1909 he came into contact with Braque and his Cubist period began. During the second decade he developed his classical period, and produced his famous sets for Diaghilev's Russian ballets. In 1936 he was appointed director of the Prado Museum by the Government of the Spanish Republic, and a year later he painted "Guernica". His definitive international recognition came in 1939, when he was given a retrospective at the MOMA in New York. During the following decades he was the subject of anthological exhibitions all over the world, in Rome, Milan, Paris, Cologne and New York, among many other cities. He is represented in the most important museums around the world, such as the Metropolitan, the MOMA and the Guggenheim in New York, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the National Gallery in London and the Reina Sofía in Madrid.

Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) - Gandhi's personally made and worn Khadi loincloth. The cloth of hand woven white cotton construction, and embroidered to one corner ' Bapu ' (Gandhi). Supplied with an original c1930s note on headed Dr Kanuga (Gandhi's personal physician) stationery which reads "clogs and cloth of reverend Bapu are contained herewith." Folded. Some staining from age, and a central area of wear from use. Total size 79cm x 99cm History: On September 22, 1921, Mahatma Gandhi took the decision of shedding his suit and tie and donning a loincloth, which remained his attire until his death in 1948. Gandhi’s decision was inspired by his desire to completely boycott British goods and to popularise the idea of ‘swadeshi’ by making khadi more accessible to the poor. Khadi is a hand-spun and woven natural fibre cloth promoted by Mahatma Gandhi as swadeshi (self-sufficiency) for the freedom struggle of the Indian subcontinent, 'Khadi' term is used throughout India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The first piece of the hand-woven cloth was manufactured in the Sabarmati Ashram during 1917-18. The coarseness of the cloth led Gandhi to call it 'khadi'. Gandhi's loincloth, along with his spectacles and sandals form part of his iconicity and images of him wearing such garments are deemed to be some of the most iconic images of the twentieth century.  Provenance: from the collection of Dr Kanuga, Gandhi's personal physician.  Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948) was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist and political ethicist who employed nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British Rule, and in turn inspire movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. Gandhi's birthday, 2 October, is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and worldwide as the International Day of Nonviolence. Gandhi is commonly, though not formally, considered the Father of the Nation in India, and was commonly called Bapu (Father). Provenance - from the collection of Dr Balvantrai N. Kanuga, Gandhi's personal long-term physician and friend.
