G.C. London Gazette 3 November 1942: ‘For great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty’ G.M. London Gazette 28 April 1942: ‘For gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty’ John Stuart Mould was born on 21 March 1910 at Gosforth, Northumberland and emigrated to Australia at a young age. Educated at Sydney Grammar School and subsequently in London, he returned to Sydney in 1934 and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 14 June 1940. Mould contracted bronchial pneumonia and, while recuperating, qualified through the Yachtsmen Scheme for appointment as sub lieutenant, Royal Australian Naval Volunteer Reserve. Discharged from the A.I.F., he was mobilised in the R.A.N.V.R. on 14 September and sent to England where he volunteered for 'special duties ashore' - service in the Royal Navy's Rendering Mines Safe section, primarily concerned with ‘delousing’ German sea mines which had been dropped on land or washed ashore. He was provisionally promoted lieutenant in December and posted to H.M.S. Vernon. Mould received a commendation for bravery in June 1941 and won the George Medal in April 1942 for 'outstanding work on dock clearance operations and those resulting in the stripping of the early German mine Type G'. Mould recovered, defused and investigated the first German magnetic acoustic unit and moored magnetic mine, allowing British scientists to devise countermeasures and in November 1942 he was awarded the George Cross for 'great gallantry and devotion to duty'. Promoted acting lieutenant commander in January 1943, Mould then worked with Professor John Scott Haldane to develop a diving-suit with an integrated air supply system. Later that year Mould, Lieutenant Leon Goldsworthy, R.A.N.V.R., and Lieutenant Commander J. L. Harries, Royal Canadian Navy, trained groups of men in preparation for the invasion of Western Europe. These units were to be dispatched to newly captured harbours to clear them of booby traps, mines and other obstructions. Following V.E. Day, he was sent to Ceylon and Australia to assess the requirement for similar parties in the Far East and Pacific theatres and was appointed commander of two of the parties. Mould was discharged from the R.A.N.V.R. on 26 November 1945 and returned to Australia in 1948. He died at Royal North Shore Hospital, New South Wales in 1957. The story of his wartime service was told in ‘Softly Tread the Brave - A triumph over terror, devilry, and death by mine disposal officers John Stuart Mould, GC, GM and Hugh Randal Syme, GC, GM and Bar’ by Ivan Southall.

A GOLD BRACELET, BY GEORGES LENFANT, FOR BOUCHERON PARIS, CIRCA 1970The polished gold strap designed to resemble embroidery, with a central gold oxidised pattern with ropetwist borders, in 18K gold, signed Boucheron Paris, numbered, with maker's mark for Georges Lenfant, French assay marks, length 17.7cmGeorges Lenfant was born into the world of French jewellery design and he quickly became a master of his trade. Growing up, he undertook several apprenticeships before studying jewellery in Paris and abroad. In 1900, Georges set up his own workshop at 47 rue des Petits-Champs, minutes away from his patrons at the Place Vendome and Rue de la Paix. He was well established by 1903 and was listed in a publication of the Revue de la Bijouterie, Joaillerie, Orfevrerie of that year. His creative designs and flawless execution put him in demand with the larger jewellery houses and, in a bid not to be forgotten behind infamous names such as Cartier, Mellerio dits Meller and Van Cleef & Arpels, Georges established a maker’s mark in 1909 and proceeded to stamp each piece before it lefts his workshop. In 1915, Georges was joined in the firm by his son Jacques who, at the age of just eleven, was eager to learn the art of jewellery.Neither Georges nor Jacques shied away from collaboration and the Georges Lenfant company had been working with Sandoz for many years when, in 1927, Gustave-Roger Sandoz sold his business to Georges under the condition that his son, Gerard Sandoz, remained as artistic director. Between them, they created striking examples of Art Moderne jewellery, their work infused with bold lines, bright colours and contrasting shapes.Following the end of WWII, Lenfant took over Verger Freres. This heralded a new collaboration with Vacheron Constantin, who had been working with Verger Freres for some time. Constantin and Lenfant busied themselves with watch design and, together, they created pieces for Hermes. In 2003, Georges Lenfant was bought by Bouder and ceased to operate. However, pieces bearing the Lenfant mark continue to prove popular, their numerous collaborations meaning that there is a design to suit everyone. Condition Report: Some gold oxidisation on the dark links - unsure whether on purpose or notSignature 'Boucheron Paris' located on clasp - numbered 2.511255Eagle's head for French 18K gold and maker's mark GL for Georges Lenfant located on tongue of claspNormal signs of wear, overall in good conditionTotal gross weight approx. 61.10g

THE PRIVATE PROPERTY OF A NOBLE ITALIAN LADYA LADY'S GOLD AND DIAMOND 'TUBOGAS' BRACELET WATCH, BY BULGARI & MOVADO, CIRCA 1965The 17-jewel manual wind movement, the silvered blue dial with baton indexes for numerals, circular case with brilliant-cut diamond bezel, snap back, completed by an 18K gold flexible coiled Tubogas bracelet, bracelet signed Bvlgari, dial signed Bulgari & Movado, movement signed Movado.By the 1960s, the Tubogas watch-bracelets which Bulgari had produced in individualised designs since the 1940s had become a staple of the brand. Initially, brothers Constantino and Giorgio were not alone in experimenting with the ‘tubogas’ style when the technique first emerged in Italy, but no other jewellers captured the essence of the snake-like style quite so well as Bulgari. While other jewellers had abandoned the gas pipe inspired-look by the 1950s, Bulgari soon monopolised the creation of all Tubgogas designs, grounded in the jeweller’s master craftsmen who excelled at the dexterous, coiled and contoured technique. Thus, the Bulgari watch paired with a coiled gold Tubogas bracelet became immensely popular and has since become an instantly recognisable Bulgari look.Since the 1960s, renditions of the Tubogas watch have starred on covers and in features in magazines all over the world. Sophia Loren sported the watch on the red carpet, and celebrities followed suit over the next few decades; singer Grace Jones was snapped wearing the watch at parties during the early 80s. And in the 2006 hit, Meryl Streep acted as editor in chief of a fashion magazine, wearing none other than the Bulgari Tubogas.Condition Report: Glass: Normal signs of wear given the age - could do with a replacement but not inevitableBracelet: Normal signs of wear Case: Normal signs of wearNo box, no papersIn running condition at the time of inspection, movement was observed to be cleanTotal gross weight approx. 141.40gAn external watch specialist who verifies each watch prior to each auction in order to open them, checks their working condition, mentions any potential damage, mentions any movement ref numbers etc...For any additional assistance, please

Lot 545

Attributed to John Lewis (fl 1745-60) Portrait of William St. Lawrence, son of William, 14th Baron Howth c 1640, approx. 48" x 36" (122cms x 92cms), in later painted and parcel gilt frame. (1) Note: Dressed as befits a young Anglo-Irish gentleman, in crimson suit, lace collar, and blue velvet coat with gold trimmings, William St. Lawrence stands beside a table, assuming an elegant pose and paying little heed to the spaniel that dances at his feet. Behind a heavy curtain, a landscape can be glimpsed. There are several books on the table, which is also draped in red cloth, the folds of which contrast with the black and white tiled floor. The portrait is remarkable in that while the artist has portrayed William as a young adult, in fact he was around ten years old?the table top is at the same level as the boy?s shoulder. Born sometime around 1732, William was given the same name as his father, William St. Lawrence, 14th Baron Howth. Although William?s mother, Lucy Gorges, was twenty years younger than her husband, they were happily married and had three children; a daughter named Mary, and two sons, Thomas (who became 1st Earl of Howth), and William, the sitter in this portrait. The St. Lawrences were friends of Jonathan Swift, who was a frequent visitor to Howth Castle and also to Kilfane, their country house in Co. Kilkenny, where William Snr indulged his passion for horses and hunting. In his poem On Rover, A Lady?s Spaniel, written a decade or so earlier, Swift had described the physical features of a toy spaniel and given advice to aspiring artists: Happiest of the spaniel race, Painter, with thy colours grace: Draw his forehead large and high, Draw his blue and humid eye; Draw his neck so smooth and round, Little neck with ribbons bound! And the muscly swelling breast, Where the Loves and Graces rest; And the spreading even back, Soft, and sleek, and glossy black; And the tail that gently twines, Like the tendrils of the vines; And the silky twisted hair, Shadowing thick the velvet ear; Velvet ears, which, hanging low, O'er the veiny temples flow. Swift?s poem is a parody of namby pamby verses written by Ambrose Phillips, in honour of Georgiana Cartaret, daughter of the Lord Lieutenant. An admirer of Swift?s, Lord Cartaret no doubt secretly delighted in the Dean?s parody. The attribution of this painting to the Dublin artist John Lewis, in Toby Bernard?s "Making the Grand Figure: Lives and Possessionsÿin Ireland 1641-1770", is convincing. Although not well-known as a portrait painter, Lewis was at the centre of Dublin?s theatre and cultural life in the mid eighteenth century, when he worked as a scene painter at the Smock Alley Theatre. He painted portraits of actor Peg Woffington, and dramatist Henry Brooke. While on a visit to Quilca House in Co. Cavan with Thomas Sheridan, he painted mural decorations, with images of Milton, Shakespeare and Jonathan Swift. He may have painted the portrait of William St. Lawrence after the boy?s untimely death. Although destined for a life as a professional soldier, and appointed an ensign in the army while still just fourteen years old, William?s military career was shortlived. While still a teenager, in April 1749, he died of smallpox. Dr.ÿPeterÿMurrayÿ2021

ATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES JERVAS (1675-1739) Portrait of Colonel Smith, in Armour Suit Oil on canvas, 76 x 54cm Born in Clonlisk, Co. Offaly around 1675, the son of John Jervas and Elizabeth, daughter of Captain John Baldwin of Shinrone Castle, High Sheriff of County Offaly. Jervas studied in London as an assistant under Sir Godfrey Kneller between 1694 and 1695. Strickland notes that after selling a series of small copies of the Raphael Cartoons c.1698 to Dr. George Clarke of All Souls College, Oxford, the following year he travelled to Paris and Rome remaining there for most of the decade before returning to London in 1709 where he developed a successful practice as a portrait painter. About 1715 he paid a visit to Ireland and remained there for a year or so. During this time he painted a number of portraits, including Jonathan Swift. Painting portraits of the city's intellectuals, Charles Jervas became a popular artist often referred to in the works of literary figures of the period. With his growing reputation, Jervas succeeded Kneller as Principal Painter in Ordinary to King George I in 1723, and continued to live in London until his death in 1739.

1967 Ford Transit, Jennings Coachbuilders Roadranger Original Motorhome. Jennings Coachbulders of Sandbach, spawned from the 1930s, building touring caravans and later overtook their peers to become recognised as the best in that field. Motorhome production ceased during the war years, restarting in the sixties and Jennings launched the Roadranger in 1965 using a Ford Transit chassis and cab supplied directly to the Jennings Factory. More smaller less expensive Rootes Commer variants were sold than this very rare Ford Roadranger which was the top end of the motor caravan market. This particular example: - 3 owners form new. - New Mot. Mileage 67000mls when the third owner had fitted a replacement USED Nissan 2.7 diesel engine replacement and an automatic gearbox in order to improve the driving experience and it has subsequently covered a further 13000 mls. Please note that the mileage on the used Nissan engine when fitted cannot be verified. The total mileage is thus 67000mls (Ford) plus 13000 mls on the used Nissan engine. As a result of this the vehicle is now fitted with two speedometers. In order to preserve the original dash board (and instructed by DVLA the original speedo was zeroed ). A brand new speedo was fitted as a pod above the dashboard which reads just under 13,000 miles today. The new speedo was necessary to accommodate the replacement gearbox ratios. A gearbox temperature gauge is also fitted as a pod above the dash. The general condition of the Motor-home is good roadworthy and useable and has made several trips to France. Ultimately there are some minor rust bubbles on the steel Ford cab body, which can be easily rectified. The remaining bodywork is aluminium coachbuilt by Jennings. The main need for renovation is the interior whereby particular areas such as the top dash vinyl covering as well as the vinyl door panels and rubber seals are perished. While needing some TLC, the van is extremely original with all the coach-built period Jennings fittings such as fridge, cooker, lighting, panelling and furniture still intact - a real blessing to have such insight into the time. The vehicle is also very practical with front seats which easily convert to a bed and the large rear sofa seats make a capacious double bed. This is a true sixties time-warp and would suit anyone interested in an eye turning motorcaravan of the era. Whilst it does need some TLC, due to its low registered mileage it makes for a rather special rare, original collectible. Registration number UTU 792E. Vehicle modified with disc brakes and a brake servo. The front suspension has also been upgraded.- Our buyers premium on all cars, motorbikes and scooters is 10% + VAT. - We encourage any interested parties to inspect the vehicle on our 4th September viewing day (10am-2pm) and prior to sale on Sunday 5th (from 10am-12 noon) to satisfy themselves on the car's condition, please check our buying terms and conditions for cars available online or via email. - Transportation options may be available, please contact us for a quote. Condition Report: Vehicle modified with disc brakes and a brake servo. The front suspension has also been upgraded. Painting work and interior in fair condition, would benefit from further work. See images of inside and out. Engine has started every time under our care & idles smoothly. Could do with some atheistic investment but has original Jennings fittings. See description for full history and mileage information of vehicle and engine.
