Lot 25

[The Beatles] the original registration document for VW Beetle car reg. LMW 281F – the white Beetle car which is featured in the legendary photograph of the Beatles walking across the pedestrian crossing in Abbey Road which forms the front cover of the Abbey Road Album. Together with a group of documents relating to the vehicle including papers from Sotheby’s when the vehicle itself was sold. The car itself was sold by Sotheby’s in 1986 for more than £12 000 – mainly because the number plate was featured as part of the somewhat ridiculous conspiracy which still circulates that the album cover photograph proves that McCartney is dead (even though he seems to most of us as very much alive today). The theory suggested that McCartney was barefoot in a funeral procession. He is out of step with the rest of the Beatles and Lennon dressed in a white suit was clearly a religious Minister. Starr dressed in black was obviously an undertaker and Harrison dressed in denim at the back of the procession was obviously a grave digger. Where the number plate comes in is that the registration mark of ‘281F’ was actually ‘28 IF’ – ie if McCartney had been alive he would have been 28 – although he was actually 27 when the album was released.
