Birkenruth (Johanna). Rembrandt, Sa Vie, Son Oeuvre et Son Temps..., by Emile Michel, Paris: Librarie Hachette, 1893, half-title, portrait frontispiece, numerous plates and illustrations, marbled free endpapers, top edges gilt, remainder rough-trimmed, contemporary olive green crushed morocco by Johanna Birkenruth, with her ink stamp to preliminary blank, faded (especially to spine and upper cover), a trifle rubbed in places, raised bands, gilt panelled compartments with tulip tools, gilt lettered direct in second and fourth compartments, date lettered at foot, covers with gilt double fillet border, and inner double fillet panel with tulip cornerpieces, enclosing repeated double 'r' monogram between small sunburst tool, red morocco doublures with gilt border of hound's tooth roll and fleur-de-lys roll, and inner border of scrolling seedhead roll between triple fillets, enclosing a triangular panel filled with tulip sprays and dots and roundels, terminating in a palmette tool, large 4to Johanna Birkenruth was an early and eminent member of the Guild of Women Binders. She produced jewelled bindings which possibly inspired Sangorski and Sutcliffe to follow suit. She offered classes in bookbinding in South Kensington, and some of her bindings were exhibited in Chicago in 1893. (1)

Unable to find a model to suit his needs, Sanderson took out a patent for a 'hand & stand' form camera in 1895 and designed his own.

Hardcastle Esq MP", retailed by H. Poole & Co, Army & Navy Taylor's, Savile Row and 1 Burlington Street, London, 40ins x 12ins x 4ins high

A large bone model of a pagoda in original box, the eight storey tower with pierced panels and bells at the corners of the tiled roofs at each level, the entrance way with attendant figures, trees and surrounding fence. Ht. 63cm. The box, shaped to suit the model, is in unfinished pine , one side handle missing , the front removeable panel missing part of its surround. In generally very good condition,the wooden base of the model warped, raising and spreading the bone, very few losses.
