'SHEPHERD'S BUSH', a London Underground enamel roundel, with bronze mount, the sign has been attached to backing board for wall mounting,50 x 61.5cmThe London Transport roundel has become one of the most recognised and imitated logos in the world and its original design is over 100 years old, first appearing on Underground station platforms in 1908. The bar and circle, as it became known, comprised a solid red enamel disc and horizontal blue bar. These early roundels, framed with timber mouldings, were introduced as station nameboards. The new device gave prominence to the name of the station and helped passengers distinguish it from surrounding commercial advertising. In 1915, the Underground’s publicity manager, Frank Pick, commissioned the calligrapher Edward Johnston to design a company typeface. By 1917, the proportions of the roundel had been reworked to suit the new lettering and incorporate the Underground logotype. The solid red disc became a circle, and the new symbol was registered as a trademark. By 1919, Johnston’s standardised roundel symbol was being used on publicity, and it began to appear on station exteriors and platform nameboards from the early 1920s. Around this time, Johnston introduced exact guidelines for the reproduction of the roundel. The proportions of the 'bullseye', as he called it, were re-designed to incorporate the standardised company typeface.Condition report: generally excellent condition

Being a Supplement to the two volumes formerly publish'd, London: J. Churchill, 1715, title in red & black, four engraved portrait plates, marbled endpapers (without rear free endpaper), hinges crudely repaired, armorial bookplate of Joseph Wren to upper pastedown, all edges gilt, contemporary red morocco, elaborately gilt decorated spine, gilt panelled and decorated boards, joints and head & tail of spine repaired, corners repaired, folioQty: (2)NOTESWilliam Sancroft (1617-1693) was the second son of Francis Sandcroft or Sancroft, of Fressingfield in Suffolk, and Margaret, daughter and coheir of Thomas Butcher. The family were of yeoman stock. William was educated at Bury St Edmunds Grammar School and was admitted to Emmanuel College, Cambridge 10 September 1633 where his uncle was Master. He graduated B.A. in 1637, M.A. in 1641, and B.D. in 1648. In 1642 he was elected Fellow and, because of his exemplary character was not ejected until 1651. When he was ejected, he at first lived with his brother, and then, in 1657, went abroad. At the Restoration, he was restored to his fellowship and in 1662 he was elected Master of Emmanuel, where he turned the chapel into a library, and procured plans for a new chapel. In 1664 he was made Dean of York on the 8 January, and Dean of St Paul's on the 10 December. In the latter office he was instrumental, with Sir Christopher Wren, in the rebuilding of St Paul's after the Great Fire of London. He was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury 27 January 1678, but opposed James II who sent him to the Tower. Despite this, at the Glorious Revolution he remained faithful to his oath of allegiance to James II. As a result he was suspended and returned to Fressingfield, where he built himself a modest house. He had intended to leave his library to Lambeth Palace, but changed his mind, sending his books remaining at Lambeth to Emmanuel College as a gift. He intended his manuscripts and the larger part of his printed books at Fressingfield, to go to the college after his death, reserving for his nephews such books as would suit a gentleman's library. As he took no formal steps to arrange this, his heirs made no attempt to carry out his wishes, and are said to have sold his manuscripts to the bookseller Bateman for eighty guineas, of whom they were bought by Bishop Tanner who presented them to the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

HOUDINI (HARRY)Portrait photograph postcard signed, inscribed and dated ('Harry Houdini/ Bristol/ 2/14/13'), reproduced by Ernst Schmidt & Co., Lübeck, showing him half-length wearing a pin-striped suit and bow tie, in fine, fresh condition, 142 x 92mm., Bristol, 14 February [19]13Footnotes:'STILL ON THE ALERT FOR NEW IDEAS': Houdini appeared at the Empire and newly-opened Hippodrome in Bristol between Monday 10 February and Saturday 15 February 1913. Notably, it was the year he introduced his famous Chinese Water Torture Cell, first performed in the UK a month earlier in Cardiff, in which he escaped from being suspended upside down in a locked glass and steel cabinet filled with water. The trick was a huge success and he was to perform it for the rest of his career. The Western Daily Press of 11 February notes that he received an enthusiastic welcome from the audiences of Bristol, where he also approached the authorities with the idea of being manacled and thrown off the famous bridge and challenged a number of Bristol's finest able seamen to truss him up to a seven-foot plank. He remained, according to the paper, 'still on the alert for new ideas and offers £100 for a suggestion with possibilities of a new kind of torture by which he can devise means of escape' (Derek Tait, The Great Houdini: His British Tours, 2017).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

They are also walnut. The locks appear original and an original key is present. The escutcheons are replacements (minor evidence of previous/ original escutcheons is visible. The current set appear to suit the cupboard well but are not original. Evidence of old worm damage (holes) in some areas but generally to a minor extent. The mirror plate appears later replaced. A pair of French marquetry bookcases, in Louis XVI style, late 18th century, one premiere-partie, the other contre-partie, each 194cm high, 109cm wide, 43cm deep Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits and some old repairs. some small losses. Various old veneer repairs (see images for examples) . To the lower section of one side panel there is a noticeable area of lifting and splitting to veneer (see additional images) . Areas of filler repair to disguise untidiness/ loss. Some evidence of surface/ grain filler in some areasIn respect of the Premier and Contre Partie marquetry, this refers to the detailed marquetry of one cabinet basically having used the 'negative' cut out marquetry that was cut out of the other example in order to achieve that marquetry. Looking carefully again at the marquetry fo the two, this approach has not been adopted strictly, therefore the detailed marquetry of one is not the complete 'negative' of the other. Please refer to the additional images for a visual guide. The locks appear original and an original key is present for each. Evidence of old worm damage (holes) in various areas throughout and some areas have been previously filled to disguise. (please refer to all additional images. The exterior of the bookcases appear cleaned/ restored and have likely been applied with later varnish. There is no glass to the doors but the wire mesh fronts are present The feet are solid in position/ secure but are likely later associated feet. They have some age and suit the bookcases well but are unlikely to be original. Some later thin pieces of timber have been secured to the underside of the bookcases to assist in securing the feet. The rear feet of one bookcase have been cut straight at the rear edge (see image) The interiors of the bookcases and the shelves (apart from the veneered front edges of the shelves) have been later red painted. Please refer to the images for reference to the form of the shelf supports. Please request additional images if required for visual reference to condition.  Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 376

A George III mahogany serpentine chest of drawers, circa 1790, 86cm high, 111cm wide, 57cm deepCondition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use.Old chips and splits. some old repairs. some sections of replaced veneer. Good original surface, depth of colour and patina overall. Some fading to the top. Interior side of drawer fronts are covered with glued down newspaper. This may disguise/ cover holes from fixture of previous handles, however there are no additional holes or alternate holes to the drawer fronts. Evidence suggests that the current handdles have been in place for a significant period and may be original. Shadows/ build up of dirt/ colour adjacent support this. The current handles are high quality and unusual and suit the chest well. The locks to the drawer and of the period and steel. Two or more locks appear to be a period replacement though as the aperture cut for one lock is slightly larger than the lock itself. In addition the keys are present for the locks, however the key to the bottom drawer lock is an alternate key to that which operates the other lock. The brass keyhole escutcheon of the top and third drawers down is slightly different from the remainder as they protrude rather than being 'flush' to the surface of the drawer as the others are. The rear panels appear original. All of the feet have neatly executed old veneer repairs. These are very well matched old repairs in the main. Signs of later re-gluing to the underlying structure/ blocks of the feet and some glued and screwed later blocks to the underside of the chest and adjacent to the feet to secure. The main underlying structure of the feet appear original. Please refer to images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

Intended to fill a gap in Ferrari's line-up between the four-seat 330GT 2+2 and the racer-on-the-road 275GTB, the 330GTC was essentially a closed version of the 275GTS and Pininfarina's understated coachwork combined elements of the latter at the rear, with touches of the 500 Superfast at the front. It was a spectacularly good looking car at the time and the passing five decades has done nothing to change that. The short (94.5" wheelbase) chassis followed Ferrari's established practice of tying together sturdy oval-section main tubes in a steel spaceframe, whilst the suspension was independent all round by means of wishbones and coil springs. First introduced on the 275GTB in 1964, the rear suspension incorporated the five-speed gearbox in a transaxle, an arrangement that created more even weight distribution and a delightful handling balance.Beneath the 330GTC's elegant bonnet nestled the 4.0-litre, 300bhp version of Ferrari's familiar, twin-cam, 60-degree V12, as used in the 330GT 2+2 enabling 0-60 in less than 7 seconds and over 150mph in true V12 GT style.Much development work had concentrated on the reduction of noise levels in the cabin, which was luxuriously equipped in the best Gran Turismo manner: leather seats, electric windows and heated rear screen were standard; radio, air conditioning and Borrani wire wheels the options. With the ability to cover ground so quickly, excellent ride comfort and sure-footed handling, Ferrari could justifiably claim the 330GTC to be the finest way for two people and their luggage to cross a Continent.According to its Ferrari Classiche ‘Vehicle Production Data’ sheet, Chassis number #11257 left Maranello in May 1968 bound for dealers Dino Ravasio & Figli in Verona and finished in Grigio Argento with a Pelle Nera Franzi leather interior. In common with many Ferraris in the seventies, it found a new home in America and, when we next hear of it in 2004, it was resplendent in a gleaming coat of Rosso Corsa. There is a Sale Invoice on file from Heritage Classics of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood detailing the purchase of #11257 on March 30, 2004 (indicated mileage 19,595) by Hal Danby of Winthrop Hall, Sudbury and a copy of the Ownership Title is in the car’s history file as is an earlier Arizona Certificate of Title with the mileage at 19,116.The Ferrari arrived in the UK on 22/05/2004 and within the file, there are documents indicating that all Duties and VAT have been paid. Quite early in its stay, it was issued with a FIVA Identity Card which states that the car was built in 1966 when it was in fact 1968, easily corrected with the aid of the soon to arrive Classiche Certification.#11527 was to remain in the care of Mr Danby for the next 13 years and during this period no expense was spared in bringing this superb motor car up to this amazing standard. In addition to the normal maintenance and regular servicing inherent in Ferrari ownership, the car was fully retrimmed in Nero leather, new boot carpet and a new headlining fitted, all interior wood finishes, door cappings and the dashboard were restored and refinished, the Borranis were rebuilt and the spinners re-chromed, the carburettors were rebuilt, a new stainless steel exhaust fitted, the brakes rebuilt and the distributors were adjusted to suit the new electronic ignition. Over the years this attention amounted to over £30,000 and there are detailed invoices in the file from JDR, TDH Classics and Hoyle-Fox.In late 2017, the 330 became the property of our vendor and has been used lightly since with the odometer indicating 26,358 miles. With the car is an invoice from LM Supercars of Suffolk for £3,763.28 dating from 22/01/2021 relating to an extensive brake rebuild (callipers, pistons, master cylinder), fuel system drain and flush, ignition service (points, distributor, HT leads), oil and filter service with fresh fluids, a new Platinum battery and other sundry items to ensure that the car is ready for the sale.More importantly, however, is the news that #11257 has been fully inspected for official Ferrari ‘Classiche Certification’, the £8,400 account has been paid and the glorious ‘Red Box’ is expected any day now. This is a simply lovely example of one of the best looking cars in history. It has just enjoyed a day or two being mechanically prepared for the sale and another day being polished and detailed to within an inch of its life. If you are considering the purchase of a classic sixties GT Ferrari, we strongly urge you to make an appointment to spend some time with #11257. It may change your life. SpecificationMake: FERRARIModel: 330 GTCYear: 1968Chassis Number: 11257Drive Side: Left-hand DriveMake: LHDInterior Colour: Nero LeatherClick here for more details and images
