SUMPTER LEONARD: (1911-1993) British Royal Air Force Flight Sergeant, a member of 617 Squadron who participated in Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) as Bomb aimer of Lancaster ED929/G AJ-L, 16th-17th May 1943.An extremely rare original mimeographed document previously belonging to Sumpter, unsigned, one page, oblong folio, n.p. (RAF Scampton), 16th May 1943, entitled No. 617 Squadron Night Flying Programme 16.5.43, being the complete crew list of the nineteen Lancaster bombers which flew in the three waves of Operation Chastise, detailing the Captains of each of the aircraft, including Guy Gibson, Mick Martin, Dinghy Young, David Maltby, David Shannon, Joe McCarthy, Les Munro etc., as well as the Flight Engineer, Navigator, Wireless Operator, Bomb Aimer and Front & Rear Gunners. With a number of ink annotations in the hand of Sumpter, recording the fate of each of the crews (OK marked alongside the crews of Gibson, Martin, Maltby, Shannon, Knight, McCarthy, Townsend, Brown and Anderson, various ticks alongside others and a red line struck through the crews commanded by Munro and Rice). With some very light age wear and a couple of neat splits to the left and right edges of the central folds, only very slightly affecting the text. Together with an excellent A.L.S., Len Sumpter, three pages, 8vo, Luton, n.d., to Derrick. Sumpter thanks his correspondent for a ‘grand selection of photographs, which are of excellent quality’, although remarking ‘My dear wife had a moan because her “best friend” Cheshire wasn’t there, but never mind’ and further continuing ‘I have sent you the crew list on which I marked up the score next morning, OK’s, losses and returns. Geoff Rice hit the North Sea, and couldn’t go on, and Les Munro was shot up, and put out of action’. Sumpter continues to reflect on Guy Gibson VC, 'About 'Gibby', he didn't suit everyone, being rather strict and a bit regimental, but I didn't find that any drawback, having transferred to the R.A.F. from the Grenadier Guards in early ’41…otherwise I can’t say a lot, because only being a N.C.O. our paths only crossed down at the flights. In fact I can only remember speaking to him once' and further remarking, 'As to the raid itself, we just missed getting called in to the Mohne attack, but on both Dams it was a case of hold your breath for about two or three minutes on the run in, and you were either lucky or otherwise. Much better I thought, than for instance Berlin or the Ruhr. I once went to Berlin two nights together and over there you were committed to a straight run across, so what with the outer and inner defences, one had about 25 miles of flak, heavy and light to contend with. But all in all, plenty of “butterflies” all round. I think the audacity, and all that, of the Dams raid made it one spectacular effort, and I am glad I was there (and here!)' A letter of superb content relating to the Dambusters Raid. Original documents relating to, and used, during Operation Chastise are of the utmost rarity and the present 617 Squadron crew list is enhanced by the accompanying impeccable provenance from Sumpter. HORNIMAN ANNIE: (1860-1937) English Theatre Patron & Manager. Horniman established the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and encouraged the works of new writers and playwrights including W. B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and members of the Manchester School of Dramatists. A.L.S., A. E. F. Horniman, one page, 8vo, London, 21st June 1929, to Mr. Wood. Horniman asks her correspondent if Thursday 27th would suit him and offers a choice of luncheon at 1.30pm, tea at 4.30pm or dinner at 7.30pm and further informs Wood that she was away for a long period although 'can now walk much more easily than I have done for years'. A 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S Mk III, registration number EVG 115H, chassis number X-ADI/150923-A, engine number 12H/397F/348, red. Manufactured between March 1970 and June 1971, the Mk III Cooper S is one of the rarest of all Cooper derivatives, with only 1,570 being manufactured before production ceased. In line with the other Mk III models the body was revised with concealed door hinges, larger rear lights and new front grille. This matching numbers Cooper S is an early example having a build date of June 1970, just 3 months into production. As such it has some of the earlier Mk II's features including toggle dashboard switches and dashboard ignition switch. Having had only two registered keepers from new (both resided in Suffolk), the first owner registered the Mini on his personal registration 30 RHW and kept the car until 1978. On selling the Cooper to its second owner a Mr John Mills from Beccles, he retained his personal registration and the Mini was allocated the period registration EVG 115H. Our vendor purchased the car in 2015 direct from Mr Mills, removing it from Mr Mills's garage where it has been in store since approximately 1990. EVG 115H was then sent to Mini marque specialists, Coopers Garage, Mildenhall for a full restoration retaining as much originality as possible. The restoration took approximately 18 months and was completed in December 2016. During the restoration the shell was stripped back to bare metal and new Heritage panels were let in as necessary, retaining the original body numbers, before a full respray was carried out. The engine which sports a period Osseli special tuning cylinder head was fully rebuilt. The hydro-suspension and all running gear were also fully rebuilt and all bright work was restored to a similar high standard. The original interior has been sympathetically restored to retain as much originality as possible to retain some period charm. The Cooper sits on period Dunlop alloy wheels shod with Dunlop S/P tyres which certainly suit the sporting nature of the Mini. This rare and quite unique Mini is offered with a Heritage Certificate, verifying it's matching number status, a V5 verifying Mr Mills as the second owner, past MOTs and tax discs ***(but no original handbook)***. The vendor who resides in America has taken the reluctant decision to sell his Mini due to a change in plans which now means that he will not be returning to Britain and he does not wish to export the car to the States. This fully restored Cooper S now offers an opportunity to purchase a rare Cooper without all of the inconvenience associated with managing a full restoration. V5, no MOT See illustrations

A large quantity of memorabilia relating to Pilot Anthony Albert Cole, born 13th April 1921, and his career in the RAF from September 1941 to June 1950 including his RAF identity card, three flight log books including records of his training in 1942 flying Hurricanes from September 1943 and posting to 691 Squadron in February 1944, his Defence Medal and War Medal, RAF 691 Squadron badge, other badges, paperwork including photographs of pilots and planes, his WWII flying jacket, lightweight flight suit, kit bag, etc, a plated dish inscribed to Anthony Cole from the officers and crew of 691 Squadron in 1948, a recording of memories of RAF Barnstable, and correspondence, Anthony Cole's war gratuity and post-war credit entitlement document and various other items plus a large quantity of RAF ordinance survey maps. A list of items including a breakdown of the maps is available. CONDITION REPORT: The leather jacket is, as excpeted, slightly cracked and showing age marks throughout. No major holes or tears though.
