Joseph Beuys 1921 Krefeld - 1986 Düsseldorf Filzanzug. 1978. Multiple. Filz. Vgl. Schellmann 26. Auf der Innentasche signiert. Eines von 60 Exemplaren. Ca. 170 x 60 cm (66,9 x 23,6 in). 1978. Multiple. Felt. Cf. Schellmann 26. Signed on the inside pocke. One of 60 copies. Ca. 170 x 60 cm (66.9 x 23.6 in). This piece is one of 60 that were worn by the 'Alti Richtig' carnival group at the carnival parade in 1978. The group's theme was Beuys' envrionment artwork 'Feuerstätte', which the Basel Art Museum had purchased. Joseph Beuys provided a felt suit from the original 1970 edition for this purpose and also took part in the carnival procession. Beuys used several of the suits worn at the time for his new work 'Feuerstätte II', which he donated to the Basel Art Museum. At the time, the young architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron suggested a theme for the carnival group. • Other suits worn during the parade are now part of the work 'Feuerstätte II' by Joseph Beuys in the Kunstmuseum Basel. • Felt insulates heat and sound, offers protection and prevents communication. • The felt suit is an extension of the felt sculptures that Joseph Beuys created for his actions. PROVENANCE: Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Salzburg. Corporate Collection Ahlers AG, Herford. 'I actually meant a completely different kind of warmth, a spiritual or an evolutionary beginning' Joseph Beuys, quoted from: Jörg Schellmann, Joseph Beuys. Die Multiples, Munich 1992, p. 19. 'The felt suit is not just a gag, but an extension of my felt sculptures, which I have also made infor art actions. Here, felt also appears as a heat element or insulator, it is used in all categories of heat sculpture, mostly in connection with fat. And this is a branch of that. So it has a connection to the character of warmth.' (Joseph Beuys, quoted from: Jörg Schellmann, Joseph Beuys. Die Multiples, Munich 1992, p. 16). Carl Spitzweg 1808 München - 1885 München Jäger mit Mädchen (Der verliebte Jäger). Um 1848-1852. Öl auf Leinwand. Links unten mit der Signaturparaphe. 33,7 x 24,9 cm (13,2 x 9,8 in). PROVENIENZ: Privatsammlung Berlin. Privatsammlung Baden-Württemberg. AUSSTELLUNG: Carl Spitzweg: Reisen und Wandern in Europa und der glückliche Winkel, Seedamm Kulturzentrum, Pfäffikon, 22.9.2002-5.1.2003; Haus der Kunst, München, 24.1.-4.5.2003, S. 152f., Kat.-Nr. 69 (m. Abb.). LITERATUR: Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg. Verzeichnis der Werke. Gemälde und Aquarelle, Stuttgart 2002, WVZ-Nr. 1483 (m. Abb.). Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg. Jäger mit Mädchen im Wald. Dokumentation, Starnberg-München, R.f.v.u.a.K. 1984, S. 12-19, 24-27, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, München, Inv.-Nr. Ana 656 SW 19. Lower left with the signature paraph. 33.7 x 24.9 cm (13.2 x 9.8 in). • Probably one of the earliest versions of the 'Hunter and Girl' motif in Spitzweg's work • Effectively staged scene of the rural love couple against the backdrop of the mountain forest • Finely crafted composition, rich in detail, which focuses on the two romantic characters as larger individual figures. We are grateful to Mr Detlef Rosenberger, who examined the original work, for his kind support in cataloging this lot. PROVENANCE: Private collection Berlin. Private collection Baden-Württemberg. EXHIBITION: Carl Spitzweg: Reisen und Wandern in Europa und der glückliche Winkel. Seedamm Kulturzentrum Pfäffikon September 22, 2002 - January 5, 2003; Haus der Kunst, Munich, January 24 - May 4, 2003, pp. 152-153, cat. no. 69 (fig.). LITERATURE: Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg. Verzeichnis der Werke. Gemälde und Aquarelle, Stuttgart 2002, no. 1483 (fig.). Siegfried Wichmann, Carl Spitzweg. Jäger mit Mädchen im Wald. Dokumentation, Starnberg-München, R.f.v.u.a.K. 1984, pp. 12-19, 24-27, Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, München, inv. no. Ana 656 SW 19. The love couple in the Alpine countryside, with the figures of the hunter and the dairymaid, is one of the most beautiful recurring motifs in Spitzweg's oeuvre. During his numerous hikes in the foothills of the Alps, Munich's local mountains and Tyrol, he was likely to frequently encounter these two as symbolic figures of an idyllic rural life. His sketchbooks contain numerous drawings of the couple, arranging their affection in ever new poses. Even from his early days, Spitzweg varied the theme in small details and nuances: sometimes a meeting takes place in a rocky gorge, sometimes on a mountain path at a small shrine, in a mountain forest or at a fountain. Spitzweg's artistic subtlety becomes evident in the encounters’ varying characters. A chance meeting, a rendezvous at night in secrecy or during the day at a midday rest, like the chronicle of a love story in the Alps. The two figures and their romance seem to have been a lasting preoccupation for him, and not just in terms of painting, as the numerous variations thereof testify to his joy in staging and telling the story. In some of the paintings, the landscape is in the foreground, in others - as in this case - the figures appear larger in the foreground. They turn away from the viewer, completely immersed in each other, and walk into the dense forest, behind which - in true Spitzwegian style - we catch a glimpse of the moon shimmering silvery behind the clouds. More clearly than inother variations on the theme, he located the scene in the present work in the mountains, as the rock face in right suggests. The lighting is also unusual in this painting, which appears to be lit from the front, as if in front of a forest stage. Alongside the vegetation and the hunter's suit, depicted in a dabbed and loose painting style in various shades of green, Spitzweg uses his preferred color scheme of red skirt, blue apron, black corsage and white blouse as the dairymaid's apparel, albeit in the smallest and most subtle doses. The two figures of hunter and dairymaid can also be found individually in single-figure scenes in Spitzweg's oeuvre; in this painting they come together in a secretly romantic way. From The Estate Of Bill Owen (1914-1999) - Last Of The Summer Wine - a complete screen-used Compo costume, as worn by Bill Owen as the iconic character in the classic BBC sitcom. Comprising a custom-made deliberately distressed woollen jacket with label for Bryan Manning of Saville Row, an equally distressed knitted waistcoat, pyjama-type shirt, distressed suit trousers complete with rope belt, and the trademark iconic green knitted woollen hat. The trousers with original 'Stagewear Unlimited of Yorkshire' costumers label, which has 'Bill' written in ink alongside. Believed to have been worn by Owen in the series around the mid-to-late 1990s and is one of his 'final' costumes for the character. There were several versions of Compo's costume over the show's run, and each time the costume wore out the production team would have to carefully source another - the jackets ended up being purchased from a Savile Row tailor (above) and were painstakingly 'weathered' by the production team in order to maintain continuity. A note within Owen's autobiography alludes to the eventual cost of his tailor-made 'scruffy' costume being in the region of two-thousand pounds once completed. With trademark green hat, rope belt and distressed appearance, this screen-used costume represents one of the most inconic and endearing outfit's in British comedy history. Supplied with a photograph of Owen as the character, wearing this costume.

THE ONE-PIECE BATHING SUITBritish Quad (30" x 40"); AKA Million Dollar MermaidFine+ Folded MGM, 1952The folded British quad offered here, using the alternate title, features a stunning image of Williams, one that is similar to the domestic one sheet but not the same. The folded poster shows a chip from the lower right corner border. There are pieces of brown paper tape on the verso.Better known as Million Dollar Mermaid (1952) and starring Esther Williams, this is the story of Australian swimming star Annette Kellerman, who was one of the first women to wear a one-piece bathing suit (instead of the more acceptable pantaloons) and was one of the leaders in popularizing the sport of synchronized swimming. Williams desperately wanted to bring Kellerman's story to the screen and, taking Kellerman with her, successfully pitched the project to MGM. Williams considered this her favorite film and named her autobiography after it. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. COMMANDER CODYOne-Sheet (27" X 41"); From the Leonard Maltin Collection Chapter 12 - The Captives of the Zero HourVery Fine+ Folded Republic, 1953The classic poster offered here is from the final chapter, "Captives of the Zero Hour," and boasts a dynamic image of Cody in his "futuristic" space suit. Other than pinholes in the top two corners, and some slight wrinkling to the right edge, the poster is in excellent condition.By 1953, the serial format, so popular in the 1930s and 1940s, was ending, succumbing to the rise of television. However, the format still had some life left in it, as proved by this classic science-fiction adventure about Commander Cody (Judd Holdren), a masked scientist/adventurer who sets out to find the cause of dangerous weather and climate changes ravaging the earth. He discovers an alien plot to conquer the planet, aided and abetted by a gang of Earth-born crooks. The Commander Cody character was first seen in an earlier Republic serial, Radar Men from the Moon (1952), starring George Wallace, and continued in Zombies of the Stratosphere (1952) with Holdren before transitioning to television. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGHOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Rolled Universal, 1982While lead actor Sean Penn may have distanced himself from his surfing slacker character in Fast Times At Ridgemont High, collectors don't have to follow suit. In fact, owning this iconic rolled poster featuring Jeff Spicoli front and center is awesome. Totally awesome. While this rolled poster does display some slight horizontal creasing in the background, this doesn't take away from the overall appearance. There is a small stain in the background to the left of the film's title, some edge wear to the upper right, and some staining in the upper left border.Seminal coming-of-age comedy directed by Amy Heckerling and written by Cameron Crowe. Sean Penn's breakout role as high-school stoner-surfer Jeff Spicoli remains iconic. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. Milner celebrates 'randomness' and is interested in both controlled and accidental mark making. The immediacy of printing and the results of accidental mistakes that occur from this practice suit her painterly style. The artist's work focuses on turning what might be perceived as banal and unremarkable into something special. Milner is fascinated with the commonality of clutter and drawn to the detail of mundane experiences that surround identity and everyday life. The edition 'Slimmers Toffees' was selected for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2023.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Notes: This dessert dish originates from a service commissioned by Queen Victoria for Tsar Nicholas I during his official visit to England in 1844. This set, referred to as the 'Coalport Service' in Russia, consisted of 62 plates and was presented to St. Petersburg the following year. The design of the plates closely imitates the William IV service crafted by Flight, Barr, and Barr, which was initially designed to commemorate the Coronation of King William IV in 1831. However, the British emblems on the original design were substituted with Russian Orders to suit the occasion. The Tsar was so captivated by the elegance of the service that he decided to order an additional 124 matching plates from the Imperial Porcelain Factory. These plates were intended for use during official state banquets. Subsequently, in 1849, a coordinating dinner service was commissioned from Coalport. In 1934, a selection of plates from the original service was sold by the Narkomat for Foreign Trade. Nonetheless, a substantial number of the surviving pieces can be found in the State Hermitage Museum. Condition:Both handle areas restored with obvious re-gilding and over-painting.
