Sean Jefferson (British, b.1957). '3 of Hearts'. Graphite and coloured crayon on paper. Image size: 28.4 x 25.3cm. Sheet size: 42.3 x 28.7cm. Signed and dated. The 3 of Hearts: This card is similar to the 3 of Cups in the Tarot. Cups are the archetypal feminine suit. This image celebrates the triple goddess of the ancient luna belief systems - three phases of a woman personified (virgin, mother, wise woman). In this representation there is no reference to age, more as in the esoteric Christian symbolism of the 3 Marys. My work is grounded in accurate delineation of animals and plants, having studied Zoology and Botany at Imperial College as part of my degree in Microbiology, combined with automatic drawing, learnt as a teenager under the instruction of a renowned spiritualist medium. I have been influenced by Surrealism, the surrealistic precision period. Fin de Siecle Symbolism and the occult philosophy behind it. Ruralism, having spent time and exhibiting with the Ruralists whilst living in Cornwall. The Victorian 'proto surrealism' of Richard Dadd, John Anster Fitzgerald and Lewis Carol, and more generally by William Blake and the Ancients, I currently live and work in Samuel Palmer's 'Golden Valley' (The Darenth Valley, Kent). Early in my career I had one person solo exhibitions in London (Mill Lane Gallery, Talisman Fine Art), Moscow (A3 Gallery), Amsterdam (Jester Gallery). I have exhibited as a 'Friend of the Ruralists', The South West Academy and the R.A Summer Show. More recently I have been exhibiting at the BADA, Olympia and LAPADA Art and Antiques Fairs, with Clerkenwell Fine Art and latterly with Kaye Michie Fine Art. In December of this year I am to have my first solo exhibition in over fifteen years with David Messum at his Gallery in Bury Street, St James's London. 1952/51 BSA 349cc Gold StarRegistration no. NUO 976Frame no. ZB32S 4453Engine no. ZB32 GS 3238Post-WW2, the Gold Star did not return to BSA's range until 1949. First displayed at the Earls Court Show in 1948, the ZB32 Goldie boasted the telescopic front fork first introduced on BSA's larger models for 1946 and came equipped with a new alloy cylinder barrel and 'head. For 1950 a 500cc version – the ZB34 – was added to the range and this larger Goldie was the first to switch to the new die-cast top-end, with separate rocker box, in 1951. The 350 followed suit in 1952 and the pair continued as the 'BB' Gold Stars after the new swinging arm frame was introduced in 1953. Apparently built up from parts, this ZB Goldie features a 1951 engine in a 1952 Clubman's model frame. Other noteworthy features include a B31/33/34 four-spring clutch; a twin-leading-shoe front brake; and a two-way damping conversion to the front fork. The machine was purchased 7/8 years ago in Bexley Heath, Kent and was last taxed in October 2020. Works carried out include a gearbox rebuild by SRM (£878 in 2018); new oil pump and drive; cylinder re-sleeved back to standard; new valves and guides (fitted by Ron Lewis); and new taper-roller steering head bearings (2020). It should be noted that there is a charging fault, although the dynamo has been checked and found to be OK. Accompanying paperwork consists of sundry bills and a V5C document.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 640

1980 Suzuki GS1000 Wes Cooley ReplicaRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. GS1000 524523Engine no. to be advisedThe success of Honda's four-cylinder CB750 made it inevitable that the other major Japanese manufacturers would follow suit, Suzuki's offering, the GS750, arriving in 1976. Within a short time, there was a 1,000cc version: the GS1000. The latter arrived in the UK for the 1978 season, vying with Kawasaki's Z1000 for the 'top sportsbike' crown. 'The GS1000 provides the silky smoothness synonymous with most across-the-frame fours, an incredible amount of torque which reduces gearchanging to a minimum plus devastating performance,' reported Bike. 'Devastating performance' amounted to a sub-12s standing quarter-mile time and a top speed in excess of 135mph - good enough to beat the Kwacker in a straight line - while air forks at the front and rear suspension units adjustable for damping as well as spring pre-load made for superior handling when pressing on. Historically significant as Suzuki's first one-litre multi, the GS1000 is today one of the most collectible of early Suzuki four-strokes. It was also a highly capable production racer in its day, particularly the Yoshimura-entered examples ridden by Wes Cooley in the AMA Superbike Championship. Cooley won the Championship in 1979 and 1980, and the factory cashed in on his success by introducing the 'Wes Cooley Replica', as seen here. Described by the vendor as in generally excellent condition, this example was imported earlier this year and last ran in May. The machine is offered with NOVA confirmation. Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Typescript of a 1752 Court Case Regarding Lands in KerryCo. Kerry: Typescript (22 pp) of a case to be heard by the Irish House of Lords on 4 March 1752 between Francis Thomas, Earl of Kerry and Lixnaw, a minor, and John Petty, Viscount FitzMaurice.Thomas (FitzMaurice), 1st Earl of Kerry and Lixnaw, married in 1692 Anne Petty, daughter of the celebrated Sir William Petty, economist, scientist, philosopher and land surveyor. They had two sons: William, who succeeded his father in 1742, and John, who in 1751 inherited the estates of his maternal grandfather, changed his name to Petty, and was created Viscount FitzMaurice (he became Earl of Shelburne in 1753). William, 2nd Earl of Kerry, died in 1747 and was succeeded by his son Francis Thomas, then a young child. The law-suit is thus between a nephew and an uncle, John (the uncle) claiming money and lands under settlements made by his father the 1st Earl. In 1750 the court upheld his claim, but the nephew (through his guardian) appealed the case to the House of Lords. In this document, John demands that the original judgement be upheld.John's insistence was caused in part by the fact that under Earl Thomas's management the Kerry estate had greatly increased in value, with the construction of a mansion, deer park, gardens, fruit and forest plantations, and encouragements to tenants to improve their lands (see p. 13).An important legal document illustrating the complexities of Irish land ownership, the feuds within a prominent family, and the development of a Kerry estate, in the first half of the 18th century. As a typescript. (1)
