2002 AC Cobra By Gravetti Engineering Transmission: manualMileage:12049When a Cobra 427, wearing 'Daytona' bodywork, was tested at 180mph on the M1, the Minister of Transport retaliated by slapping a 70mph speed limit on all Britain's roads. This (apocryphal) story is typical of the folklore that surrounds one of the last production cars to be designed, built and bought purely for the joy of driving. The GE 427 is a realistic replica of the 1960's classic; devastating acceleration, grossly illegal top speed, leech-like road holding and aggressive, head-turning body styling. But with the advantages of modern engineering techniques and safety features. GE Ltd. offered four engine and three gearbox options which were fully rebuilt and guaranteed for 12 months. The ladder style chassis was fully protected with two-part acrylic paint and waxoyl. The front and rear suspension and brakes were taken and modified from a donor Jaguar which also supplied the identity and year of the car. Rack and pinion steering and wheels are Halibrand replicas. As the GE sales brochure states: 'Don't buy a GE 427 to impress your mother-in-law. Don't buy one as a family runabout. Don't buy one to take your bank manager to lunch. Buy one for the sheer enjoyment.'This particular example is understood to have been built in the mid/late 1990's and first registered in October 2002. A full photographic record is included detailing the build. Power comes in the form of the trust Rover 3.5-litre V8 with a Holley four-barrel carburettor, giving ample power and that all important V8 rumble. The suspension is adjustable, so can be tailored to suit the preference of the driver depending on their requirements. The black mohair soft top is removeable, allowing for a very authentic looking car when the roof is removed completely, as the originals were. The car is in excellent order throughout, having covered less than 12,000 miles and the Royal Blue bodywork has an excellent shine. This Gravetti Engineering Cobra is valued at somewhere between 2%-3% of the price of an original 427, and certainly provides much more than 3% of the driving experience! Offered to auction with an MoT test certificate valid until May 2024, a V5C registration document and a comprehensive service record detailing works carried out over the years and a recent bill of nearly £1900 in August 2023 for work on the steering/suspension and a thorough service.

1971 Porsche 911T Transmission: manualMileage:89170The original Porsche 911 was introduced in autumn 1963 and was manufactured and continuously developed until 1989. It was then succeeded by a modified version, internally referred to as Porsche 964, but still sold as Porsche 911, as are current models. Mechanically, the 911 was notable for being rear engine and air-cooled and, from its inception, the 911 was modified both by private teams and the factory itself for racing, rallying and other types of competition. The original 911 series is often cited as the most successful competition car ever, especially when its variations are included; namely the powerful 911 derived 935 which won the 24 Hours Le Mans and other major sports car races outright against prototypes. Early 1970's models are perhaps some of the most sought-after, with the narrower bumpers which are especially popular and deemed more attractive on the early 911 with a style that modern 'restomod' or backdated styles such as Singer replicate. This example was purchased by our vendor from Japan in 2020 and it made the perfect candidate for a sympathetic restoration given how good of a starting point it already was. It is understood that the car was originally an Irish Green example but at some point had been repainted in white, so a full bare metal respray was undertaken, with photographs documenting the process. The body has been finished to an excellent standard. The interior also presents in fantastic condition, with a brand-new pair of Cobra Stuttgart seats trimmed in black vinyl and black corduroy, which suit the car perfectly. A new headlining was fitted along with new carpets and many other parts all leading to a car which presents superbly throughout. Our vendor has owned a large number of Porsches over the years and decided after driving the car that the engine performed exceptionally well and did not require any further attention. The car is supplied with an MoT test certificate valid until June 2024, a V5C registration document and many invoices for various parts throughout the build process. This is an excellent example of an early air-cooled 911 and is offered without reserve. Consignor Fraser SmithGuide Price £50,000-£60,000

An interesting WW2 Home Guard group, relating to Albert Frederick Hodgkins of the Basingstoke Borough Company, who served between March 26th 1941 and December 31st 1944. To include: an earlier issued LDV armband, with screen printed lettering nad a popper stud sewn to the inside for attaching to a sleeve. Also, 2 embroidered LDV slip on shoulder title, a July 1944 dated Home Guard parade ticket, a Home Guard service certificate with the facsimile signature of George VI. Plus, a printed version of the Kings Broadcast To The Home Guard from December 1944, a small quantity of type written documents (some marked Private & Confidential), which would appear to be a sort of newsletter. Interestingly, there are several references made to suspicious characters seen in the area, such a gentleman calling himself ‘Colonel Kampden’ seen ‘wearing the uniform of the Australian Imperial Forces’. Another document talks about an ‘Enemy Alien’ at large, dressed ‘in a grey flannel suit (no hat), speaks good English, 32 years of age…possesses tow false identity cards of “Henry Evans” and “Albert Williams”. An amusing letter, written by a Brig-Gen A.F.U. Green to the editor of the Daily Telegraph, talks about the woeful quality of arms supplied to the Home Guard during WW2. Condition: generally good throughout. The cloth items are clean and free from damage. The service certificate has a triangular shaped tear to the bottom edge, but it does not effect the printed area. The other paper items show normal age related wear, such as fold lines and foxing in places.

Lot 152

A WW2 era 1943 dated 1st Pattern Denison paratrooper’s smock. Later privately tailored, possibly in the post war era. Once worn by Alistair Charteris Duncan MBE, while serving with the S.A.S. In the post war era. It’s surmised that the smock was reissued from stocks in the later 1940’s or early 1950’s. As was fairly commonplace for the era, the smock has been tailored privately to better suit its original wearer, though it’s unknown if this was soon after its issue, or in the post war era. The smock has been fitted with a full length zip to the front, replacing the ‘half zip’ configuration that was seen as standard. Additionally, cuffs have been added, and the tail flap that would have fastened around the gusset area has now been tucked up into the lining. The item is lined, which has covered over the original dated issue label, but a convenient split at the seam of the liner means that (with some positioning you can view the cloth label). The original label sizes the item at ‘No.5’ and dates it to 1 April 1943. The maker is stated as being C.W.S. Ltd. The date of manufacture would make it the hand dyed variety, with some accounts that the camouflage patterns were hand painted onto the fabric. The patterns can fade over time from wear and wet weather conditions. Notes and Provenance: Alistair Charteris Duncan MBE (1927-2007) was born in India, where his father was a tea planter. After the premature death of his mother, he returned to the U.K. and later attended Marlborough College. It’s believed that he originally enlisted in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlander, at a young age, possibly right after his formal education ended (this would have been in the very early post war era). According to information supplied by consignee, Alistair was recruited by the SAS in the late 1940’s, and this has been confirmed by the Special Air Service Regimental Association. Information supplied by them suggests that served with them from 1948 though to 1954, as part of 21 SAS in B and C squadrons. The rank he held on the point of joining them is unknown, but it’s known that he eventually attained the rank of Captain. Alistair undertook parachute training during his service, and it’s believed that the holes pushed through both cuffs were a kind of thumb hole for holding the sleeves in place while parachuting. His service with the Special Forces took him to the Middle East, which began his lifelong love affair with the region and its people. He later achieved success with his photographic and artistic works in the 1960’s. Further details of his post armed forces career can be found in his published obituary from 2007. He received his MBE in the 1999 New Years honours list, for his work on Anglo-Middle East relations. The smock has been consigned by Captain Duncan’s Godson, who inherited the smock after his passing in 2007. Condition: generally good. The smock’s pattern has faded a little, as is normal with pieces of this kind. As mentioned in the main description, the seam of the lining to the back area has split open, but this allows you to see the internal label. It shouldn’t be problematic to repair this if desired. Both cuffs have ‘thumb holes’ through them, as described above. A couple of extremely minor stitching pulls, but no obvious holes to the fabric.

Lot 911

From the 'DJH Ford Collection', an original, unused/uninstalled factory bench-tested RS500 engine; 'automotive art' or as a spare, either way it's magnificent.   The Sierra RS Cosworth might have been the first Ford to be honoured with the Cosworth name, but the relationship between the two companies dates back to the 1960s when the American car producer funded the development of a 3-litre V8 engine for Lotus' F1 car. The resulting V8, known as the DFV, then went on to be a dominant engine in Formula 1 for over a decade, winning 155 Grand Prix.Despite reigning supreme on track and in rallying throughout the decade, by the end of the 1970s, Ford’s motorsport dominance was on the wane. Even the once all-conquering Ford-Cosworth DFV Formula 1 was starting to lose out to more modern turbocharged units. This was painfully obvious when a Ford VIP contingent visited the 1983 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where a Touring Car race supported the main event and Ford bosses, Stuart Turner and Walter Hayes, were dismayed to witness a group of Capris being humbled by SD1s with Rover V8 power. The solution was again to be found with the engineers at Cosworth who had previously developed a four-cylinder engine for Ford's racing and rallying saloons in the late 1960s and 1970s. The Mk1 Escort RS1600, which replaced the Lotus-powered Twin Cam Escort, had a 1,600cc engine with a 16-valve head designed by Cosworth called the 'BDA'.The formula for the Sierra wasn’t dissimilar to that of the earlier homologation Escorts and Cosworth and the trusted cast iron block from Ford’s single-overhead cam, the T88 Pinto that was used in the Escort RS2000, was utilised to form the basis of this new engine. Code named 'YAA', Cosworth designed an aluminium head to suit the Pinto block with two belt-driven cams operating 16 valves; eight 35mm diameter inlet valves and eight 31mm exhaust. Compared with the basic Pinto, almost everything changed except for the cylinder block itself and the new head and valve gear were matched to a new steel crankshaft, rods, pistons, and sump, and hydraulic valve lifters were a given. A turbocharger was always part of the plan and a Garrett AiResearch T3 with an intercooler were selected boosting power to 201bhp at 6,000rpm and 205lb/ft at 4,500rpm, in road car spec. With a new facility to produce the production-ready version (now with the 'YB' prefix), the first prototype started test-bed work in Northampton in June 1984 although the first engines and test cars didn’t go to Weber-Marelli in Italy until September 1984 before subsequently being 'signed off' by mid-1985.First utilised in the 3-door Sierra RS Cosworth of 1986 - introduced for homologation to allow Ford to go 'Group A' Touring Car racing - the new production 1,993cc YBB engine proved to be legendary, both on road and track. When the ruling allowed for an 'evolution' upgraded model to compete, spawning the RS500 Cosworth, the YB engine stepped-up too, the grateful recipient of further development. To cope with the requisite extra horsepower required, the original YBB motor was switched to an uprated 'YBD' unit which featured a reinforced block (still cast-iron) with thicker walls (note, there are two main types of YB block - known as the 205 and the 200, the latter is a thicker-wall design and was found in 4 x 4 versions, such as the Escort and 1990 Sapphire; the RS500 block was also a thick-wall design but stamped 205, recognisable by its smaller core plugs). Other differences included a bigger Garrett AiResearch T04 turbo plus a larger air-to-air intercooler, pressurised oil-cooled pistons, uprated oil, water and fuel pumps and beefier (orange) air hoses for the radiator and turbo, and a re-mapped ECU.Ford pushed the limit of the Homologation rules to the maximum for the RS500 and the road car featured components that weren’t at all functional but allowed legal modifications on the race cars. The RS500's Cosworth YB engine had an inactive secondary injection system fitted so, when activated on the race cars, their engines could swallow greater amounts of fuel and produce more power (with a different engine map and the second injectors squirting fuel, race RS500s made an 'easy' 485bhp and it didn’t take much more before the engine was putting out 525bhp).In addition, the YBD’s induction system was reconfigured with a bigger intake plenum which, along with a new secondary fuel rail, required one corner of the battery tray be cut away for installation, and a slightly different thermostat housing and alternator bracket. On the road cars, the RS500's power rating went from 201bhp to 224bhp at an unchanged 6,000rpm. Peak torque was the same as the regular Sierra RS Cosworth: 204lb/ft at 4,500rpm.Although undoubtedly successful before, the Ford Sierra became really dominant when the RS500 took to the circuit, winning the 1988 DTM championship, the 1989 Spa 24 Hours, the 1988 and 1989 Bathurst 1,000km, the 1988 and 1989 Australian Touring Car Championship, the 1988 and 1989 Japanese Touring Car Championship and the 1990 British Touring Car Championship. The engine presented here is a Cosworth factory, bench-tested YBD unit, #YBD 0626, designed and built for an RS500 road car. Tested and signed off by Cosworth, confirmed by a tag, it's understood to be one of the very last YBD engines to leave the factory. We understand that it has always been complete (i.e. never as separate components), has never been apart, rebuilt nor ever installed into a car, being sat on its plinth since manufacture. All the factory elements appear to be present and correct, the stampings included, even down to the original FRAM oil filter!Meticulously kept - in pride of place even - alongside his two RS500 cars, it has been owned by our vendor for last 14 years. He sourced it from an ex-pat Ford aficionado living in Malta who had acquired it previously in the UK (some 6 years before). Rumour has it that only a handful of unused YBD engines still exist. For the serious collector or enthusiast, this 'jewel' of an engine is supplied with a bespoke glass display case and is now ready to be appreciated by its next custodian; what an opportunity.N.B. Please note this lot will be sold with a buyers premium of 20% plus VAT as per our usual memorabilia terms.Click here for more details and images
