Lot 184

A Brewster-Pattern Pedestal Dioramic Stereoscope, by G. Lowden, Dundee, signed to oval ivory plaque on top 'PATENT DIORAMIC STEREOSCOPE, MADE BY G. LOWDEN, OPTICIAN, DUNDEE' and impressed with the number '20', walnut & satin wood veneered case with hinged top, solid wood rear for opaque views only, hinged top, push pull focus to front lens panel, viewing lenses in turned horn collars to front panel, raised on a fluted mahogany pedestal, height adjustment via a wooden screw above turned base, height 34cmA rare opportunity to acquire one of the earliest known (serial No.20) lenticular stereoscopes by George Lowden, the instrument maker responsible for producing Dr. David Brewster’s first ever stereoscope. The lenticular (use of lenses to get a 3D effect) stereoscope was invented by Dr. David Brewster and proved over time to be his best selling invention. Brewster first took his original design of a lenticular stereoscope to a local instrument maker in Dundee, George Lowden. Lowden started making Scientific instruments at the age of 24(1). In 1849 Lowden made several of Brewster’s lenticular stereoscopes which in turn were given away by Brewster to the nobility of England to promote the new discovery of stereo photography (2). Unfortunately, they were given a rather lukewarm reception and as a result were not a successful commercial venture. In Lowden’s autobiography(3) Lowden recounts the development of the stereoscope and how he came to fall out with Brewster:‘Fortunately for me at the end of 1849 I got acquainted with that nobelman so well and favourably known to all Dundonians, George Lord Kinnard, and through him was introduced to many of the servants who were entertained by his lordship at Rossie Priory. Among these was sir David Brewster, who at this period (1849) invented his stereoscope, and I got the making of the first one and sending the copies of it to many scientific men all over Europe. Later on I also improved on them and made a great number for many years afterwards. The fault of Brewster’s stereoscope was that the lens’ were to small, being in fact, only two halved of a spectacle glass. This did not suit every eye and in experimenting I discovered that larger lenses were and advantage. I pointed this out to Brewster but he was wedded to his opinion, and as I feared the idea might be taken up by another, I took out a patent for my improvement – which experience has amply justified – but my action was, unfortunately, resented by Brewster, and gave rise to considerable friction, for which I did not consider I was to blame, seeing that I had pointed out the improvement and he had refused it’Following the disagreement Brewster in 1850, unable to convince another English company to manufacture his stereoscope, visited the French firm of Duboscq et Soliel in Paris, a company that specialised in optical instrument manufacture. Here Brewster showed Duboscq an example of Lowden’s stereoscope. Duboscq produced a model that was exhibited by Brewster at the 1851 great exhibition in London. It attracted the attention of Queen Victoria who was very impressed with the effect it gave. Brewster then presented theQueen with an example of Duboscq’s stereoscope with some accompanying stereo photographs. Queen Victoria’s interest sparked huge demand for the stereoscope and in 1856 Brewster reported sales of over half a million stereoscopes. The principle of Brewster’s lenticular stereoscope has survived until present day being essentially the same as the optical system used on the very latest Virtual reality headsets.Notes:, According to Dr A. D Morrison Low & J. R. R. Christie in their book Martyr of Science, Sir David Brewster, ‘No original Lowden stereoscope has ever been traced, although microscopes (INV RSM TY 1980.238 and A56557 in the Welcome Museum) and telescopes and a camera are known to have been retailed by Lowden’. Since Morison Low’s & Christie’s book, published in 1984, one other Lowden stereoscope has come to light. This stereoscope is held at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. It was purchased by the museum in 1999 with New Zealand Lottery Grant Board Funds( Registration Number GH007816). Its condition and serial number are unknown. References 1. H. Lot 364

Baktria, Sophytes AR Tetradrachm. Uncertain mint in the Oxus region, circa 246/5-235 BC. Attic standard. Head of Athena right, wearing earring, necklace, and crested Attic helmet decorated with three olive leaves over visor and a spiral palmette on the bowl / Cockerel standing right; kerykeion behind, ΣΟΦYΤΟΥ to right. Bopearachchi, Sophytes -; Mitchiner -; Whitehead, NC 1943, pp. 60ff (drachm); O. Bopearachchi, "Royaumes grecs en Afghanistan. Nouvelles données“, in L'art d'Afghanistan de la préhistoire à nos jours, CERDAF, Actes d'une Journée d'étude, UNESCO, 11th March 2005, Paris, 2005, p. 60-2 = NAC 59, 655. 16.97g, 25mm, 6h. Good Extremely Fine. Of the greatest rarity, the second and by far the finest known example. The question of who Sophytes was and when he lived is one that has confounded numismatists for a hundred and fifty one years. It should be quite clear to anyone reading this that the Sophytes of this coinage was not the Sopeithes described in classical sources as the ruler in the Punjab region between the Hydraotes and the Hyphasis who so impressed Alexander. We can say with certainty only that he was evidently Indo-Iranian by ethnicity, for Sophytes is the Hellenisation of a non-Greek name, and that he must have commanded an important region or city, most likely within Baktria, in the vicinity of the Oxus river. Though little (if any) attention has been paid to the choice of the cockerel as the reverse type, it is when considered properly, thoroughly Baktrian in character. The cockerel was a most sacred animal in Zoroastrian religion; besides its common name ‘Halka’ and its onomatopoeic name ‘Kahrkatas’, it was also referred to by a religious name, ‘Parodarsh’ - literally, ‘foreseer’ (of the dawn). It was the bird of light and hence of righteousness, scattering the darkness and the evil that dwells within. This remarkable tetradrachm provides direct evidence for a transitional phase coinage struck by Sophytes, on the obverse of which we can observe the continuation of the ‘Athenian Series’ using the helmeted head of Athena type, while the reverse replaces the Athenian owl for the cockerel that will remain the principal type of Sophytes on his helmeted portrait issues. The cockerel is joined by a kerykeion adjunct symbol already familiar to us from the preceding series, and the legend ΣΟΦYΤΟΥ. We have already established that the coinage of Andragoras and Sophytes should be considered roughly contemporary, with the former’s probably preceding that of the latter, judging by the patterns of wear that we have encountered. It seems fair to propose therefore, that emboldened by Andragoras’ placement of his own name upon the reverse of his coins, Sophytes decided to follow suit. Certainly, the hold of the Seleukid central government over its farthest eastern satrapies had been weakening since the death of Antiochos I; Houghton and Lorber (SC, p. 167) observe that “mint operations in the rich province of Baktria gradually escaped Seleukid control” throughout Antiochos II’s reign, and while it was previously accepted that there was only one Baktrian mint, recent scholarship and archaeology has shown this not to be the case.

A.L.S., Alfred Douglas, one page, 8vo, Paris, 18th April 1930, to [Patrick] Braybrooke. Douglas informs his correspondent of his imminent travel plans, explaining that he will return to Hove on Tuesday but won't be in London immediately, 'but shall be pleased to see you if you come down any day to lunch'. Together with an interesting selection of A.Ls.S. and T.Ls.S. by various other individuals, all with content relating to either Wilde or Douglas, including Arthur Ransome (1884-1967) English Author & Journalist, remembered for his Swallows and Amazons series of Children's books. Ransome became embroiled in a libel suit with Douglas following his work Oscar Wilde - A Critical Study, 1912. Ransome won the suit, although refused all interviews regarding it. T.L.S., Arthur Ransome, one page, 4to, Cartmel Fell, Windermere, 31st August 1928, to Patrick Braybrooke, stating, in part, 'The only suggestion I have to make is that you should take the letter as a warning to leave the subject alone. You will find that it is impossible to write on Wilde (whatever may be your intention) without becoming involved in an embittered and exceedingly unpleasant controversy'; Shane Leslie (1885-1971) Irish-born Diplomat and Writer, cousin of Winston Churchill. A.L.S., Shane Leslie, one page, 4to, Westbourne Terrace, London, 4th July 1930, to [Patrick] Braybrooke, expressing his pleasure at having read his correspondent's monograph on Oscar Wilde and commenting 'It is always difficult for Catholics to know how to touch the difficult question of his life and death. You have done this admirably and said exactly what should be said in words and sentences which would have brought balm in Reading Gaol'; Marie Stopes (1880-1958) British Author who founded the first birth control clinic in Britain. Daughter of Charlotte Carmichael Stopes (1840-1929) British Scholar, Author and Campaigner for women's rights. T.L.S., Marie C. H. Wagstaff (Honourable Secretary of The Royal Society of Literature) etc. The majority of the letters are neatly laid down, causing some slight wrinkling and minor age wear to some. Generally G, 8   Patrick Braybrooke (1894-1956) English Literary Critic who published Oscar Wilde: A Study in 1930 and The Life and Work of Lord Alfred Douglas in the following year, being the first biography of Douglas.

Their relationship both scandalised and fascinated their contemporaries and their house became a haven for visitors, most of them writers, including Wordsworth, Shelley and Byron, as well as the Duke of Wellington and Josiah Wedgwood. A.L.S., Lady Eleanor Butler & Miss Ponsonby, in the third person, in the hand of Sarah Ponsonby, two pages, 8vo, Plas Newydd, Llangollen Vale, 29th April 1811, to Dr. [Andrew?] Bain. The ladies seek to assure their correspondent of 'the very great distress they suffer in being under the necessity of leaving home this day (under an engagement which it is out of their power to postpone) lest it should prevent them the particular pleasure they expect for of returning their personal thanks to Dr. Bain for the wonderful restoration of their dear friend Lady Kingston - & of obtaining further particulars on a subject so greatly interesting to them as that of her health', further adding that they had stayed home from church yesterday so as not to miss their correspondent, although now hope to have 'the honour & pleasure of his company at Breakfast tomorrow morning - - any hour - however late or early - that may suit Dr. Bain's convenience'. With integral address leaf bearing the remnants of a red wax seal. Some light overall age wear, otherwise VG      Butler and Ponsonby's correspondent is most likely to have been Dr. Andrew Bain (d.1827) who had been gazette as physician extraordinary to the Prince Regent in 1811 and retired nine years later, in 1820.

Henry Bone, RA (British, 1755-1834) Portrait of Charles Genevieve Louis Auguste André Timothée d'Eon de Beaumont, called Le Chevalier d'Eon (1728-1810) signed and dated "H Bone 1793" lower left and inscribed with the sitter's name to the reverse watercolour on ivory, oval, in a gold-plated frame 8.50 x 6.80cm (3 x 3in) Other Notes: Le Chevalier d'Eon was one of the most enigmatic figures of the late 18th century. Although known to posterity as a soldier, spy and writer, he most famously distinguished himself as a transvestite. One of the first reported instances of his cross-dressing was at a ball at Versailles where, according to his own account, both Madame Pompadour and Louis XV attempted to seduce him. Even though he dressed mostly as a man throughout his public career, he notably managed to infiltrate the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia by presenting himself as a woman whilst working as a spy for the French King. After joining the King's secret service in 1755, he was sent on his first mission to Russia and briefly fought in the Seven Years' War. He was then posted to London in 1763 where he worked undercover as a spy for Louis XV. However, following his altercation with the French Ambassador, whom d'Eon sued for attempted murder, he fell out of the King's favour. Out of spite d'Eon published secret state documents in 1764, which stirred a great sensation, but also led to a libel suit. D'Eon was declared an outlaw and was found guilty by the High Court in London, barely managing to escape dressed as a woman. He was eventually paid off by Louis XV and went on to work as a spy, living in political exile in London. Inscribed "Monsieur / Le Chevalier d'Eon" verso. Slight staining left of the sitter's chest and top right, along the sitter's wig.

Follower of Jacopo da Ponte called Jacopo Bassano (Italian 1510-1592) Jacob's Return to the Land of Canaan Oil on canvas 134 x 183cm; 53 x 72in This lot depicts the biblical story of Jacob returning to Canaan. Jacob tricks his father Isaac into giving him livestock then runs away to his uncle Laban who becomes his father-in-law. After fourteen years of labour he returns to Canaan. Here we see Jacob and his wives Rachel and Leah, returning to Canaan in secret. (Genesis 21: 17-21). Jacopo Bassano's The Journey of Jacob, part of the Royal Collection acquired by Charles I, depicts an almost identical setting. Both are early examples of the pastoral landscape, one of Jacopo's specialities, admired by his contemporaries. Bassano is known to experiment with styles to suit commissions and The Journey of Jacob has Mannerist qualities which are typical of his early works, long, sinuous figures arranged in a decorative and stylised fashion.
