"Outer space now belongs to 007". Daniel Goozee's first artistic commission for a Bond campaign produced a series of fine looking, incredibly detailed posters. Da Mei & Wen Lin (Chinese, 20th C.) "Yellow Tulip" Stamped lower right and lower left. Original Watercolor on Rice Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c (F) Flower stamp issued January 22, 1991. Although it may seem hard to believe, the affordable and common tulip of today was once the most sought-after and expensive of all flowers. In the 1600s, speculators in Holland and nearby countries drove the price of tulip bulbs far beyond the reach of the average gardener. One would-be horticulturist gave four cows, eight hogs, a dozen sheep, a suit of clothes, a bed, two barrels of butter, one thousand pounds of cheese, two barrels of wine, four barrels of beer and a solid silver pitcher in return for a single tulip bulb. Fortunately for today's gardener, the tulip is far less dear, as evidenced by its presence in millions of gardens around the world. Developed in Turkey and Persia in the 13th century, the hardy tulip is a perennial, growing from a single bulb to bloom in early spring. Some one hundred species of tulip are known today, coming in dozens of shapes, sizes and colors. Planted in well-drained soil, a tulip from one bulb will bloom year after year. Rows of tulips around a favored tree bring splashes of early color to a landscape. Image Size: 12.25 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 14.25 x 12.75 in. Unframed. (B12971)

TYPOGRAPHICAL ERROR THESE ARE 19TH CENTURY NOT 18TH AS PREVIOULY NOTED19th Century photographs of New Guinea. Twenty-five mounted prints mainly measuring 29 x 23 cm, and mainly covering the declaration of the British Protectorate along the south-eastern coastline of New Guinea, from Motu-Motu in the West, to Killerton Island in the East. The various flag raising ceremonies were performed by Commodore James Elphinstone Erskine (1838-1911), of the Australian station, who in turn appointed Hugh Hastings Romilly (1856-1892) as Acting Deputy Commissioner until the arrival of Sir Peter Scratchley the following year. Charles Lyne, correspondent for the 'Sydney Morning Herald', and covering the expedition for that paper, gives a detailed account of the journey in 'New Guinea' (Sampson Low, London, 1885). Rhodes House Library has a volume of 'Narrative of the expedition of the Australian Squadron to the South Eastern coast of New Guinea October to December 1884' containing chromolithographic illustrations and thirty six of these photographs. ( See http://cudl.lib.cam.ac.uk/view/PH-Y-03084-A/12 ). Images include:-First gathering of Native Chiefs aboard H.M.S. 'Nelson', Port Moresby, November 5th. The Reverend James Chalmers was sent out to persuade local chiefs to come on board H.M.S. 'Nelson', and here Commodore Erskine explains the meaning of the protectorate to them. He is here seen shaking hands with Boe Vagi, as he presents him with his ebony stick of authority ('rather a nice idea' Romilly remarks). The other chiefs sit on the deck, while the ship's company is gathered behind. Various national flags have been draped above the deck as awnings. Behind Erskine, in white suit and topee stands Reverend Lawes, interpreting, and between Erskine and Boe Vagi is H.H. Romilly. In the foreground, back to camera between Lawes and Erskine, is probably Captain Bridge of H.M.S. 'Espiegle'. The portly bearded figure in a topee behind Lawes is possibly Henry Chester, who announced the annexation of South-eastern New Guinea on behalf of the Queensland Government in April 1883. :- The reading the proclamation of annexation, Mr Lawe's house, Port Moresby, New Guinea, November 1884 / photographer John Paine or Augustine E. Dyer :- Boe Vagi (sitting centre ) and other Motu-Koitabu chiefs and villagers on board HMS Nelson in Port Moresby Harbour 1884.Listening to Commodore Erskine and Rev Lawes explain Queen Victoria's Proclamation of Papua as a Protectorate of the Crown :- A banana plantation in the Port Moresby District :- Ethal Island and landing place at native village, Port Moresby :- The Proclamation at Kerepunu, Hood Lagoon :- Landing at Motu-Motu, Freshwater Bay :- H.M.S Nelson in Port Moresby Harbour :- New Guinea Chief, Motu-Motu November 10th :- Queen Koloka, at Delena :- Sailors landing on the beach at Motu-Motu, Freshwater Bay . .

Robert Griffiths Hodgins (South African, 1920-2010)Balancing Act: a triptych (2003) bottom panel titled, signed and dated (verso)oil on canvaseach panel 91.5 x 122cm (36 x 48 1/16in).(3)Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired from Simon Mee Fine Art, London in 2003.ExhibitedLondon, Simon Mee Fine Art, Robert Hodgins, September 2003. 'There are paintings that stem from memory and from a sombre look at the human condition. Paintings about the construction and confusion of contemporary urban life, but also paintings about the pleasures of being alive, pleasures that crowd in upon the pessimism everywhere - that crowd in and refuse to be ignored' (Robert Hodgins, Goodman Gallery, 2000).This triptych, with its vibrant colours and playful composition, perfectly communicates the joys of existence. Looking at the orange, red, and yellow hues, one can almost feel the sun one's face. The comic incongruity of the precariously balanced acrobat in his crisp business suit is a reminder that life's absurdity is something to be celebrated; we should not fall into the trap of taking ourselves too seriously. This drive to find fun, to seek pleasure, was partly born out of the artist's experiences during the Second World War. He joined the South African Union Defence Force in 1940, and saw active service in Kenya and Egypt before being discharged. At the end of the war, he returned to London. This gloomy period, with rationing still in full force and many in mourning, continued to inform his outlook for the rest of his life. One should not take beauty for granted; it should be savoured.Hodgins painted Balancing Act at the age of 83. The impressive scale and energy of the piece reveal a man determined to live life to the full, even in his twilight years.BibliographyS.Fraser, ed. They called for the merging of the best of Western and Nigerian traditions, forms and ideas into a hybrid art-making practice and conceptual framework. The concept was developed in the late 1950s and early 1960 alongside a gathering momentum towards independence in search of a modern art that would suit the new nation. Here Nwoko following his study of scenography and theatre design in Japan in the early 1960s has flattened the spare composition in the tradition of the Japanese Ikebana floral arrangements. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
