The 10th Air Force was responsible for operating the India-China Ferry between 8 April and 1 December 1942. The airlift route was over the the eastern end of the Himalayan Mountains over which they flew military transport aircraft from India to China to resupply the Chinese war effort. Aircrews called the operation 'the Hump'. According to Fisk's son Dan, he held the record for the greatest number of trips over the Hump during the war and was awarded five Distinguished Flying Crosses, eight Battle Stars / Air Medals, three Bronze Stars, five General's Commendations and three Presidential Citations. Of the 200 pilots in his original group, only he and one other pilot survived 'the Hump'. The airmen called it "The Aluminum Trail" because so many C-46's and 47's were either shot down by Japanese fighters, brought down by ice or inclement weather or collided into the mountains due to ice on the wings and windshields or navigation errors.Hoyt Dan Fisk survived the war and built a successful oil business in Kansas.Whyte's wish to acknowledge the assisance of the Fisk family in cataloguing this lot.

O'CASEY SEAN: (1880-1964) Irish Dramatist. A.L.S., Sean O'Casey, one page, 8vo, Torquay, Devon, 6th December 1955, to Lewis Funke, Drama Editor at The New York Times. O'Casey informs his correspondent, in full, 'Here is the article (no longer present). If you think it no good, or not good enough, don't hesitate to give it the go-by. I've just finished an article & introduction for a book of previous articles & stories, long out of print; with other articles that appeared in magazines, & one written - no two - about Yeats & G.B.S. for British Ministry of Information while the guns were booming. The book, "The Green Crow", is to come out in the spring. Of course, I hope the article may suit you; but if doesn't - well.' Annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand to the upper left corner. VG Lewis B. Funke (1912-1992) American Drama Editor and Critic for The New York Times. W.B. Yeats (1865-1939) Irish Poet & Dramatist, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1923. George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950) Irish Playwright, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1925 O'Casey's work The Green Crow was published by George Braziller, New York in 1956

ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French Novelist, Playwright & Journalist, a prominent figure in the Dreyfus Affair. A.L.S., Emile Zola, two pages (separate leaves), 8vo, Paris, 3rd April 1889, to a colleague ('Mon cher confrére'), in French. Zola apologises for not having replied to his correspondent earlier and adds that, instead of disturbing him, it may be simpler to come and see him, enquiring 'Don't you all gather at the seat of the Society of Men of Letters?' and adding 'If yes, please make me an appointment there, at 4pm, on the day that will suit you best, except Thursday and Saturday'. A few minor spots of foxing and some extremely light age wear, otherwise VG

Lot 114

O'CASEY SEAN: (1880-1964) Irish Dramatist. T.L.S., Sean O'Casey, two pages, 4to, Torquay, Devon, 12th February 1958, to Lewis Funke, Drama Editor at The New York Times. O'Casey announces 'I haven't been able to devote a second to searching out an article that might or mightn't suit you, for two reasons - an ailing eye and the necessity to withdraw my play from the Tostal Council', further adding 'I daresay, you have heard of the blast that came from the Palace of Dublin's R. Catholic Archbishop which thundered out that No Votive Mass would be said if any play by Joyce or O'Casey was performed during the Tostal Festival. Bang!' O'Casey continues to explain 'The Tostal Chairman chose a Director about whom I had some doubts… he was frightened of the play. He couldn't make himself comfortable with the blend of realism and fantasy, though there's less of it than in the BISHOP'S BONFIRE… I got a letter from the Globe Theatre… the Globe told me that they considered the play 'unproducable'; that they wouldn't commit themselves to a production till I signed an authorisation giving their producer (Director) the power to change the play “according to his requirement”. I answered this by a brief note…Then came a letter from the Chairman saying “…I am instructed to ask you to, if you would, change your attitude towards the question of negotiating such alterations.” Negotiations! You'd think it was a summit meeting. So I have withdrawn the play… I have a hunch that the Archbishop's blast shook them a little' O'Casey also writes regarding the problems with the publication of his book, The Green Crow, and a letter sent by the publisher to the Irish Embassy regarding censorship, before finally musing, 'There you are Louis - Tostal Council, Globe Directors, Censorship Board, Archbishop, and Customs Officer, not counting Legion of Mary, C.Y.M.S. Monsignors, and Canons, all in a battle array against a bird, sniping at the Green Crow as it flies past, or perches for a minute on an Irish tree. I am just letting you know the news; not in any spirit of complaining, for I am used to it all by now; and it doesn't take a feather outa me.' A letter of interesting content. Accompanied by the original envelope signed ('O'Casey') by him in the return address to the verso. One minor paperclip rust stain to the upper edge, only slightly affecting a few words of text, otherwise VG Lewis B. JEROME JEROME K.: (1859-1927) English Writer and Humourist, best known for Three Men in a Boat. A.L.S., J K Jerome, one page, 8vo, Alpha Place, London, n.d. (docketed to the verso of the integral leaf 3rd March 1893), to Grey. Jerome enquires if he will find Colles in on Friday and continues to instruct his correspondent 'Please note to address all references re Rubbish….to 7 Alpha Place & not to Idler offices'. With blank integral leaf. VG Jerome had been chosen (instead of Rudyard Kipling) to edit The Idler in 1892. The magazine was an illustrated satirical monthly catering to gentlemen (or those of whom appreciated idleness) however, Jerome had to withdraw from the magazine, and that of To-Day, in 1893 due to financial difficulties and a libel suit. This may explain Jerome's reference to 'rubbish' in the present letter, written in the same year as his withdrawal.

O'CASEY SEAN: (1880-1964) Irish Dramatist. A.L.S., Sean, two pages, 4to, Torquay, Devon, All Hallows Eve, 1960, to Lewis Funke, Drama Editor at The New York Times. O'Casey thanks his correspondent for their kind letter and continues, 'I have just finished correcting galley-proofs of my three latest plays, leaving my eyes a little weary; but I went on to make an effort to write something on the lines suggested by you…' further adding, 'I am very glad you mentioned Phyllis; & more glad to hear she is doing so well at college. I can clearly see her sitting beside you on the couch when you visited us here - a charming young lass indeed. Do give my love (and a kiss) to (“The Green Leaf”, poetical for a pretty young girl) dear Phyllis, and Eileen's love (& another kiss) too' O'Casey further discusseshis work for The New York Times ('I like….to be looking out from a page…') and reviews, stating 'Clara sent me Mr. Taubman's review, which of course, pleased me much, & I thank him. Paul Shyre's clever effort & work, I'm sure, deserved Mr. Taubman's praise - he wouldn't have given it, anyway, if he hadn't thought so.' Together with Eileen O'Casey (1903-1995) Irish Actress, wife of Sean O'Casey. A.L.S., Eileen O'Casey, two pages, 4to, Torquay, Devon, 13th July 1959, to Lewis Funke, Drama Editor at The New York Times. O'Casey apologises for not replying sooner, and continues 'Sean would like to see you, and thinks it would suit him better to see you on the evening of Aug 27th or Aug 28th… Please let me know if this is suitable as hotels are very hard to book this time of year in Torquay.' Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by O'Casey.
