Potter (Beatrix) The Tailor of Gloucester, first edition, first issue, [one of 500 copies], signed presentation inscription from the author "with kind regards to Mrs [?]Hemming, Oct 19th, 1937" to front free endpaper, colour frontispiece and 15 colour plates, light browning to free endpapers, original pick boards with lettering and pictorial design in black, spine a little faded, a few minor marks, but a remarkably sharp, near-fine example overall, [Linder 420; Quinby 3], 16mo, [Privately printed for the Author by Strangeways & Sons], December, 1902. ⁂ Beatrix Potter's favourite of her own works, scarce signed and in such excellent condition. The Tailor of Gloucester was based upon a tale Potter heard whilst visiting her cousin Caroline Hutton in Gloucestershire in or around 1897: the tailor John Pritchard was commissioned to make a suit for the new mayor, he opened up his shop on Monday to find the suit completed except for one buttonhole and with a note attached reading "No more twist". It transpired that his assistants had finished the suit in the night, however Pritchard encouraged the story that it was the work of fairies. Potter took time to develop the story whilst also working on Squirrel Nutkin, presenting it as a picture letter to Freda Moore in 1901. Potter had the work privately printed, in a similar format and in the same month as the second issue of Peter Rabbit (see lot XXX) as Warne were still in the process of publishing Peter Rabbit and she felt it unlikely they would publish another tale so soon.

France & Italy.- Ward (Rev. Edward) Ward's Diary or Journal of a Tour in France & Italy, A.D. 1826, & of a Residence in those three Countries, A.D. 1827, [&] Translations of Amatory Poems, Songs, &, &, in Le Printemps et l'Amour, ou Le Baiser Charmant, Chansonnier. A.D. 1827, 3 vol., autograph manuscripts, together 492pp. (journal 308pp. & poems 184pp.), original straight-grained roan-backed boards, paper covered boards rubbed with small loss, edges rubbed, 8vo, 1826-27. ⁂ Edward Ward's journal gives a different picture from most English travellers of the time. Energetic, yet affected by nerves at times, he copes with bad inns, strange travellers met on the road, a pick-up by an Englishwoman in Paris who promises much but fails to deliver, dreary fellow tourists, illness and being swindled by coachmen. Ward visits innumerable museums and galleries, attends the theatre and opera whenever possible, and makes something of an entrée into Italian high society. Finally, in Italy he meets an unnamed woman and returns in 1827 to marry her in Leghorn. Ward travels from Shrewsbury to London, Thames frozen at Gravesend ("beautiful"), to Calais and visits Paris (buys himself a suit of Paris black), Orléans, Tours ("a stupid place"), Bordeaux, Toulouse, Montpellier, Marseilles, by boat to Leghorn, Florence, La Spezia ("by the gulph of that name Mr. Shelley was drowned, & his body burnt upon the shore, as affectionately & pathetically described by Lord Byron."

Anyhow you can alter it to suit yourself"; ALs to Maurice Webb, 2pp. & envelope, RMMV Winchester Castle, 3rd June 1935, giving his views of Roy Campbell, (1901-57) South African poet and satirist, "That poet of yours is a curiosity of literature because he is an extraordinarily precise reproduction of Byron... . I shall call him Childe Campbell. He makes every landscape tragic, and sees in it a framework for his own dark destiny," reporting on the return journey, "The ship rolled frightfully for the first two days; but we did not miss a meal; and we have just returned from the equatorial heat and resumed our nightclothes," and giving best wishes to Webb's children; and 4 other related pieces, including a typed lay out for the radio interview, photograph of Shaw being interviewed by Webb, a typed account of Bernard Shaw by Webb after his death in 1950 and a newspaper cutting of Shaw's visit by Webb, first autographs by Shaw in pencil, folds, v.s., v.d. (14 pieces). ⁂ "The best lay-out for a discursive chat over the wireless." - GBS. One of the agreed questions: "When we first met, you were Chairman of the publication committee of the Fabian Society. Those were great days for political and social pamphlets. How do you regard the result of that pamphleteering?" - Webb. "Answer that the complete insensibility of the governing classes to the activities of the intelligentsia & the waste of political talent through the Oxford & Cambridge system, Example of recent London broadcasts." - GBS. Included is an appreciation of GBS written by Webb after his death in 1950 in which he records the Shaw's reaction to the death of T.E. Lawrence, "My wife and I were with Mr. & Mrs. Shaw when word was brought of the death of Lawrence of Arabia. Both were clearly affected. G.B.S. said that the way death had come, as a result of a spectacular motor accident, was fitting to the personality of Lawrence. He turned aside from our conversation he must prepare a public statement on the news." - Maurice Webb. Maurice Webb (1890-1966), publisher.

Postumus Ӕ Double Sestertius. Lugdunum, AD 261. IMP C M CASS LAT POSTVMVS P F AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right / LAETITIA AVG, galley right with four rowers. RIC 143; Bastien 87. 15.92g, 32mm, 6h. Virtually Mint State – apart from a light patina, this remarkable specimen is otherwise exactly as it was when it left the die. One of the very finest known sestertii of Postumus in existence. Ex Roma Numismatics VII, 22 March 2014, lot 1223. Postumus appears to have been an imperial legate of Lower Germany when he defeated a Juthungian army which was returning from Italy, laden with goods and captives (even though they had been turned back by Gallienus at Mediolanum). Postumus had already distributed the captured wealth to the legions he commanded when he received the command of Gallienus’ son and Caesar, Saloninus, to hand over the recovered spoils. Renouncing Gallienus and Saloninus, the troops hailed Postumus as emperor, and proceeded to attack Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium and kill Saloninus. Postumus immediately secured the loyalty of Gaul, Upper and Lower Germania, and Raetia. The following year Britannia, Gallia Narbonensis and Hispania followed suit. Though Postumus relied on the army which kept him in power for a decade, the safety of the provinces was not solely an army matter, for the coasts required protection also, and so it is reasonable that his navy deserved mention on the coinage. The issues which couple the reverse legends FELICITAS and LAETITIA with scenes of a galley probably show that the emperor by no means neglected his navy, and perhaps that it achieved success. The type of galley depicted on the reverse of the present coin could be a navis lusoria, which was a small military vessel of the late Roman Empire that served as a troop transport. It was smaller and narrower than similar earlier vessels, and ideally suited to the rivers close to the Limes Germanicus; the presence of this type of vessel in the Classis Germanica is shown through the discovery of the Mainz Roman ships in 1981-2, thus proving that they operated on the Rhine and Danube.
