Signed in turquoise fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. Scarce. VG

HARDY THOMAS: (1840-1928) English Novelist. A.L.S., T. Hardy, one page, 8vo, Max Gate, Dorchester, 22nd July n.y. (1892), to the publisher John Lane. Hardy informs his correspondent that he will be at Max Gate for sometime, `& I daresay shall be able to receive Mr. Strang in the course of a week or two.`, further explaining that he will write again when Lane has let him know the date at which it would suit Strang to come. Written on mourning stationery and with blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Hardy. Very slight, minor age wear to the central fold, otherwise VG Hardy`s father had died two days earlier, on 20th July 1892. The artist William Strang (1859-1921) drew Hardy at Max Gate shortly after this letter was written. Lane published Strang`s work in The Art of Thomas Hardy by Lionel Johnson (1894) and the novelist himself remarked to Lane that, whatever "its fidelity or otherwise as a portrait" it seemed to him "an excellent specimen of Mr. Strang`s work".

A rare large Pilot doll by Norah Wellings, created for the RAF Comforts Fund, c. 1940s, dressed in a one-piece “Sidcot”-pattern flying suit over RAF uniform, having pilot’s “Wings” brevet to left breast, cream felt with detail accessories of zip-fastened flying-boots, gauntlets, and flying-helmet etc., the ensemble complimented by a parachute-pack with harness, to back, with red, white & blue parachute intact, uniform tunic of mid-blue velvet with felt collar and brass buttons to front, with grey cotton shirt and black tie beneath, flying suit with faux-fur collar trim to helmet, pocket has applied blue felt flash, inscribed “Wrekin”, the collar having applied label inscribed “Royal Air Force Comforts Fund - regd. design no. 337533”, the lady-pilot has blond hair under helmet, with impressed & painted facial features on pink felt with blue eyes and red lipstick, shows minor tears and a little moth activity, minor discoloration to face and other surfaces from age and use, 30 ins (77cm). A Special Edition doll created to raise funds for the Royal Air Force Pilots” Charitable Organisation; which provided relief for POWs, or families of pilot’s who gave their lives in service during the Battle of Britain and the Air War 1939-45; with regard also to Women Pilots of the RAAF, and those delivering and ferrying fighters & bombers throughout the Second World War. An inter-war period RAF-issue “Sidcot” one-piece flying suit, c. 1930s, of reinforced double layer khaki cotton-canvas, stores ref 22C/777 (formerly 776) Size 4, zip-front, sleeves and ankles, formerly wired for heating. Together with a contemporary leather flying-helmet and officers” uniform peaked cap by Gieves of London, a pair of WWII period flying-boots and a portable gramophone, used “at readiness” during the war, inscribed “18317 F/O Sleigh C.E. RAF - SEAAF” in white paint (5)
