Historical Footnote Viscount Thurles is one of the lesser titles of the Earls and Dukes of Ormond and therefore extended by courtesy to their senior male descendants. The most famous bearer of the title was Thomas Butler (1596-1619), son and heir of "Walter of the Beads", 11th Earl of Ormond. He lived at Thurles Castle and married, against his father's wishes, Elizabeth Poyntz, daughter of Sir John Poyntz of Iron Acton in Gloucestershire. Like his father he was a pious Catholic and refused to conform to Anglicanism. In 1619, with his father imprisoned in London, he was summoned to appear before the King, but was drowned when his ship was wrecked off the coast of Anglesey. His son and heir, being a minor, was brought up as a Protestant and eventually succeeded the 11th Earl and became The Great Duke of Ormond.
