§ Dame Elisabeth Frink (British 1930-1993) Fallen Man, 1960 1/6, signed and numbered, bronze with dark brown patina(16cm high, 60cm long (6.25in high, 23.6in long))Provenance: Private Collection, London.Footnote: Literature: Ratuszniak, A. (ed.), Elisabeth Frink: Catalogue Raisonné of Sculpture 1947-93, Lund Humphries, London, 2013, p.71, cat. no. FCR79 (another cast illustrated). 'The very fact of someone falling in space makes me feel nervous. I very often dream of falling through space myself. It becomes a nightmare and is very frightening. So it is always with me, this particular fear, which I think is a good thing because it starts off sculpture; it gives a sense of urgency which is important to me.’ (Elisabeth Frink quoted by Huw Wheldon, Monitor: An Anthology, Macdonald, London, 1962. p. 28.) Elisabeth Frink’s Fallen Man is part of a highly-important theme in her practice, in which her childhood experience of World War Two, fascination with the nude male figure and existential concerns about mankind are brought together. Frink was nine years old when war was declared. Her father was a cavalry officer in the British Army and served abroad for most of the conflict. Much has been made of Frink’s time in Suffolk near to Bomber Command air-bases during this period. As she explained: ‘there was a whole bunch of very jolly Polish airmen. They’d go off in their flying machines – and sometimes they got killed. We were right next door to an operational aerodrome and sometimes we’d see the planes coming home on fire.’ (as quoted in Edward Lucie-Smith and Elisabeth Frink, Frink: A Portrait, Bloomsbury, London, 1994, p.15). Many works of the early 1960s explored the themes of men in flight, men in space, spinning, falling and fallen men and eventually bird men, through which Frink explored the concept of men at war. Reviewing them later in her career, Frink declared: 'These sculptures were the nearest I got at that time to subjective ideas of the concept of a man involved in some kind of activity other than just being. So my earlier figures were not at all sensuous; they were too much involved with fractured wings or the debris of war and heroics. By this last phrase I mean individual courage.’ (as quoted in Ratuszniak, A. (ed.), op.cit., p. 72). In Fallen Man, the anonymous figure is depicted without stand or plinth. The point of direct contact between the work and the surface on which it is placed is key to conveying its concept. Facial features are suggested in the outsized head, atop the splayed and disfigured body. A sense of trauma, pathos and vulnerability is enhanced by the rough handling of the plaster from which it was cast. Edward Mullins has written about further sources of inspiration for this area of exploration: ‘The original impulse, in fact, was to make sculpture of a figure falling from space. The source here is dual. Since a child she has experienced dreams of herself falling and the sensation remains a powerful one in her imagination. More specifically, during the late 50’s she came across photographs of the French bird-man, Valentin, depicting him before he jumped (eventually he jumped to his death) helmeted and goggled and decked out in his special flying-suit with voluminous wings. This is the principal visual source of the various Bird-Men.’ (Edward Mullions, ‘Introduction’, The Art of Elisabeth Frink, Lund Humphries, London, 1972, unpaginated). Frink’s work defies precise interpretation. She declared: ‘what I’m doing is trying to set up a kind of encounter with the spectator, a dialogue between my sculptures and the public. People have to add part of themselves to make it work; they have to look into it as well as at it.’ (as quoted in Edward Lucie-Smith and Elisabeth Frink, op.cit., p. 64).

TWO 17TH CENTURY ROYALIST PORTRAIT MINIATURE JEWELSThe first depicting King Charles I, the Martyr (1600-1649), standing before his crown, wearing the sash and badge of the Order of the Garter over a suit of armour, the second depicting William III (1650-1702) holding an orb with Mary II (1662-1694) before a skull, both painted on vellum in pie-crust mounts, the reverse of the mount holding William and Mary engraved with initials, JM, lengths: 1.9cm - 2.3cm (2)Footnotes:After the death of King Charles I in 1649, commemorative jewellery in the form of rings, lockets and slides, was produced in great numbers. The jewels were worn by Royalists in memory of Charles I. A few had concealing lids, as many supporters of the royalist cause wished to keep their allegiance secret. Some were presented by the exiled Queen Henrietta Maria to Royalist supporters in appreciation of their continuing loyalty and financial backing. The tradition for wearing images of Stuart monarchs remained popular during times of political and religious uncertainty, periods of national mourning and also celebration, such as the Restoration of the Stuart monarchy in 1660 when these jewels could be worn more openly. The miniatures were not painted from life but derived from earlier full-scale oil portraits. The miniature of Charles I in his suit of armour derives from Sir Anthony Van Dyck's circa 1638 portrait in the Hermitage Museum (inventory no. ГЭ-537).Prince William of Orange married Charles I's grand-daughter, Mary Stuart, the Princess Royal, in 1677. The couple were happily married and anointed joint sovereigns in 1689. Devastated by Mary's death, William ruled alone until his own death in 1702 from a riding accident. The skull in this Restoration portrait has been placed behind Mary to represent her early death from smallpox while William can be seen holding an orb in reference to his continuing reign. The image of William in a suit of armour and lace cravat derives from his circa 1685 portrait by Willem Wissing (Royal Collection inventory no. RCIN 405644). While a different colour, the design of Mary's dress, jewelled corsage and ermine cloak relate closely to her circa 1692-94 portrait attributed to Jan van der Vaart, which is held by the National Portrait Gallery (inventory no. NPG 197).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

1932 Velocette 348cc KTT MkIV Racing MotorcycleFrame no. TT4259Engine no. KTT426•One of approximately 148 MkIV KTTs made•Matching frame and engine•Present ownership since 2016By the early 1920s it had become apparent that Veloce needed a model more up-market than its Velocette two-stroke. Other manufacturers were fielding new overhead-valve and overhead-camshaft machines, and Veloce followed suit, the Percy Goodman-designed, overhead-cam Model K appearing in 1924. Of 348cc, the new engine employed a single overhead camshaft driven by a vertical shaft, and was unusual in having a very narrow crankcase, an arrangement determined by the existing transmission and frame design, but which made for a stiff crankshaft assembly. Entered in the 1925 Isle of Man TT, the model K did not fare well, all three entries retiring because of lubrication problems. Its engine redesigned to incorporate dry-sump oiling, the cammy Velo returned the following year to score a memorable victory, Alec Bennett romping home in the Junior race ten minutes ahead of the next rider! Second place in 1927 followed by another win for Bennett in '28 ensured a healthy demand for Velocette's overhead-cam roadsters and prompted the launch of the KTT. One of the most successful over-the-counter racers of all time, the KTT debuted at the 1928 Olympia Show where it was hailed as an 'exact replica' of Bennett's 1928 works bike, though in fact the production MkI KTT incorporated a number of improvements. The KTT would be regularly up-dated with improvements first tried on the works bikes, and the major change for the MkIV was the introduction of a four-speed gearbox with Willis positive-stop foot-change, together with a new cylinder head incorporating hairpin valve springs and a more-compact scavenge pump. Redesigning the latter enabled the spark plug - now a 14mm type - to be relocated for improved combustion. The cycle parts too had come in for revision, the frame's tank rails being lowered to accommodate a larger fuel tank and, later in 1932, a rear sub-frame being added beneath the engine and gearbox. Part way through production the MkIV benefited from another works experiment, the cylinder head material changing to bronze as a result of overheating experienced on Willis' blown racer 'Whiffling Clara' when the standard cast-iron 'head was used. Production of the MkIV ceased in October 1934 on the introduction of the MkV after around 148 machines had been made. According to Velocette authority Ivan Rhodes, 'KTT426' was invoiced on 8th July 1932 to Motorcycles Ltd London and sold to a Mr Cackman (or Lackman) of London E7 (letter non file). The current vendor purchased the KTT from Steve Griffith's Racing & Investment Motorcycles in June 2016 (receipt on file). A very valuable spare large-capacity fuel tank is included in the sale. 1928 Velocette 349cc Model KRegistration no. YX 7016Frame no. 2181Engine no. KCR2093Velocette's two-strokes had proved very popular, but by the early 1920s it had become apparent that a more upmarket model was required. Of 348cc, the new engine employed a single overhead camshaft driven by vertical shaft, and was unusual in having a very narrow crankcase, an arrangement determined by the existing transmission and frame design, which made for a stiff crankshaft assembly. This Model K Velocette comes with its original sales invoice issued on 18th August 1928 by Velocette's London agents L Stevens Ltd of Goldhawk Road, Shepherd's Bush to first owner Mr G J Stanford. Including electric lighting, the purchase price was £75 17s 1d when the UK average annual wage was around £100. Documentation on file includes two old-style buff logbooks and numerous receipts for parts relating to the Velo's full rebuild by the current owner, who purchased it in 2018. 1934 Velocette 348cc KSSRegistration no. OXS 764Frame no. KTL 4956Engine no. KSS 5297Velocette's innovative two-strokes had proved reliable, economical and very popular but by the early 1920s it had become apparent that a more upmarket model was required. Other manufacturers were fielding new overhead-valve and overhead-camshaft machines, and Veloce Ltd followed suit, the Percy Goodman-designed, overhead-cam Model K first appearing in 1924. Of 348cc, the new engine employed a single overhead camshaft driven by vertical shaft, and was unusual in having a very narrow crankcase, an arrangement determined by the existing transmission and frame design, which made for a stiff crankshaft assembly. By the end of the 1920s Veloce's range of K-series roadsters boasted a host of variations on the theme that included Normal, Sports, Super Sports, Touring, Economy and twin-port models. Introduced in 1925, the KSS was the Super Sports version while the KTS tourer employed the same overhead camshaft engine in virtually identical cycle parts, differences being confined mainly to mudguard style and wheel sizes. This original KSS was despatched on 27th July 1934 to E A Mason of Lund, East Yorkshire (see VMCC dating document confirming matching numbers). The current owner purchased the Velo from a friend a few years ago as a non-runner that had never been registered. Since then the vendor has refurbished the engine, gearbox, and all cycle parts, etc and has obtained an age-related registration from the DVLA. First shown on the 1933 concept BMW R7 designed by Alfred Böning, with an Art Deco aesthetic that also carried over to the R12, the forks revolutionised motorcycling. So much did they improve comfort and handling almost all other motorcycles manufactures followed suit, happy to pay BMW royalties for their patented innovation. This also allowed the R12 to have interchangeable wheels, especially useful if a sidecar was attached. With a single carburettor fitted (as per this example) the 745cc motor produced 18 horsepower at a mere 3,400rpm, driving through a four-speed gearbox. This particular R12 was purchased at our spring 2017 sale and since then the current owner has spent some £20,000 (receipts on file) to create perhaps the finest example in the UK.Much of the original work was undertaken by Nick Cronin of award winning Robin James Engineering, who substantially overhauled the rolling chassis, including rebuilt wheels and revamped brakes, as well as a complete rewire with refurbishment of the magneto-dynamo undertaken by a specialist in Germany. The engine and gearbox also benefitted from significant work.Subsequent fettling was commissioned or by taken on by Peter Ardron, well known and highly respected within the BMW airhead community. Working alongside fellow specialists in Germany, the current owner was determined to allow Peter free rein to produce a machine as perfect as an 80 year old motorcycle can be. This including having previous attempts to repair the frame rectified by a German restorer with the appropriate jig. The result is a fine collectors' standard motorcycle, but one which might also be called the ultimate riding machine. This R12 was manufactured in October 1941 and was previously registered in the Netherlands. First registered in the UK on 9th November 2015, it is offered with a fully documented and priced renovation since 2017, a BMW dating letter, previous Dutch registration documents, and a current V5C Registration Certificate.
