A RARE GEORGE I JAPANNED TRIANGULAR GAMES TABLE c.1720 the Chinese black lacquer tilt-top gilt decorated with watery scenes of pagodas, bridges and willow trees, centred with the arms of the Tower family of Weald Hall, inscribed with the motto 'Love and dread', with floral diaper borders and three divided counter wells, on an English ebonised baluster stem and tripod cabriole legs and pad feet, with three paper depository labels for the Tower family 72.5cm high, 111.5cm wide, 97.8cm deep PROVENANCE A Private Collection. LITERATURE Ralph Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, vol.III, p.198, fig.20. CATALOGUE NOTE The Tower Family of Weald Hall is descended from Thomas Tower of Wryesdale who died in 1659. His son Christopher went to London and prospered as a merchant, eventually becoming Deputy Collector of Customs for the Port of London. He died in 1728 leaving two sons, Christopher and Thomas. Christopher Tower (16941771) was a Whig politician and an MP between 17271742, with his family seat at Huntsmoor Park, near Iver in Buckinghamshire. His brother, Thomas (16981778), was a lawyer and an MP who got elected to Parliament for Wareham in 1729 and bought Weald Hall in 1759. There are no written records to say who commissioned this rare triangular card table but it was probably Thomas before he acquired Weald Hall, sometime in the 1720s. The unusual triangular table top was made for the three player trick-taking card game Ombre or 'hombre', which originated in Spain in the 16th century but its popularity swept through Europe at the end of the 17th century and into the 18th century. Ombre was the first card game in which a trump suit was established by bidding rather than by the random process of turning the first card of the stock which gives this game its historical importance in the field of playing cards. Although little played today, Ombre has been described as "the most successful card game ever invented"

The car to have in 1960, quintessentially British and Jean Shrimpton prettyFinished in Old English White with silver wires and a smart red interiorOlder restoration retaining a good shine. Superb panel fit throughout1588cc B-Series producing 80bhp and offering 0-60 in 13 seconds and 96mphRack and pinion steering, Dunlop hydraulic front disc brakesStill retains its initial registration number 2650 RFRecent inspection and freshly issued MOT certificate with no advisoriesYour earliest inspection is encouraged and welcomedWhen the MGA arrived in 1955, it must have come as quite a shock to MG aficionados who had become accustomed to the pre-war look of the company's sports cars. It was a complete departure in styling and its beautiful streamlined body was right up to the minute in terms of appearance. It was powered by a new engine; MG had decided that the old XPAG unit had had its day and so introduced the much more modern B Series engine that had made its debut in the recently announced Magnette saloon. The 'A' was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955. In 1959, MG released the 1600 model featuring a larger 1588cc engine, disc brakes at the front and rigid framed side screens with sliding windows. Rolling off the production line during the first quarter of 1960, this Abingdon-produced 1600 MGA Coupe was originally finished in Chariot Red complemented by the optional painted wire wheels. Clearly used as an everyday car in period, the time would eventually come when a little TLC was required. Completed some years ago, 2650 RF (its original registration number) was treated to a sympathetic restoration and a colour change to Old English White but retaining the red interior albeit retrimmed to suit. A conversion to a single 12v battery rather than two 6v batteries was also implemented. The silver painted wire wheels remain, as does the factory-supplied steering wheel, with the only new addition being an attractive stainless steel boot rack. Now nicely settled in, the Coupe has an air of originality and does not appear to be too factory fresh or overly restored, simply a very pleasant and mellowed MGA. With Coupe values now closely following the Roadster, this smart little MG is worth a look and with the 1600cc engine and front disc brakes fitted as standard, this is one 60s sports car that is very useable in today's traffic. It has recently been inspected and a new MOT Certificate issued without advisories.Seriously pretty and quintessentially British, MGAs offer real driving pleasure on the open road and make great entries into local rallies and club events. You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. Lot 405

Spectacularly well presented and totally evocative of the mid-1930'sBuilt by the Swallow Coachbuilding Company in Foleshill, CoventryThis is an early model of the SS1 dating from 1934Powered by a 2.1-litre, standard straight-six side-valve producing 53bhpDelivered new to Buenos Aries, Argentina, in April 1934. Right-hand drive with a KPH speedoPurchased for the Danish Aalholm Automobile Museum where it resided until 2012Subsequently, it was cosmetically restored by the Key Museum to an incredible levelIt now looks fabulous in its distinctive two-tone black and white paintworkThe interior with its Sunburst Art Deco styling cues is a work of artNow roadworthy and we understand the car starts and runs wellForerunner of the 'Jaguar' marque, 'SS' originally stood for the Swallow Sidecar & Coachbuilding Company, which had been founded in Blackpool, England by William Walmsley in 1922. The company branched out into motor manufacture in 1926, its first major success being an attractive sports saloon on the Austin Seven chassis. The design was the work of Walmsley's business partner, William Lyons, whose future Jaguar creations would confirm his reputation as one of the British motor industry's most gifted stylists. The SS1, launched in 1932, is a close-coupled coupé based on the Standard Ensign 16hp. The chassis and body were designed by Lyons; a long bonnet, tiny passenger compartment and helmet-type front wings imply the ultimate in high performance of the time and this is what ultimately created a blueprint for Jaguars of the future, combining sporting good looks with a better-than-average specification. Indeed, so successful was Lyons' new venture that production of Swallow-bodied cars ceased altogether in 1933, and SS Cars Limited was formed, initially as a subsidiary of the Swallow sidecar-building business. For 1934 the SS1 gained a new wide-track chassis and slightly enlarged Standard engines of 2,143cc and 2,663cc, while the body - now available in four different configurations - underwent yet another restyle. In this, its final form, the SS1 remained in production until 1936, by which time 2,503 examples of this ultimate version had been made. This 2.1-litre model SS1 fixed-head Coupe, Chassis number 247848, is unique as records show that it was delivered new to Buenos Aries, Argentina, in April 1934. This is further confirmed by the car being a right-hand drive example with an original km speedo to suit its South American home. The car was eventually purchased for the Danish Aalholm Automobile Museum Collection where it resided before being sold in 2012. Subsequently, it was cosmetically restored by the Key Museum, giving it the distinctive two-tone paintwork and black leather interior that it proudly displays today. Some years later it was purchased by the current owner who repatriated it to the UK and went on to commission further mechanical restoration to bring the car from a museum piece to a roadworthy example and, as a result, the car starts and runs well, having been driven sparingly and dry stored undercover ever since. The car has a NOVA number, and a UK V5 can be applied for with the new owners' details. It is well known that these cars left the factory without a fixed chassis plate, instead, a simple chassis tag was supplied with its factory handbook. As such, many examples have lost their original chassis tag and in turn also their true identity. Chassis no. 247848 however, whilst its original supplied tag is not present, has been subject to much research and scrutiny by marque experts meaning it is one of the few SS1 Coupes with a confirmed identity. This little SS is an exceptional survivor, all the more surprising considering it has travelled the world. Early cars such as this are rare, highly desirable and do not come to market very often and one in this condition would fit comfortably into any collection of important automobiles. You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. A 'C16' UK Supplied, right-hand drive, 944 Turbo with 21,000 miles from newA superbly preserved 944 Turbo. Comprehensive history, invoices from Autofarm and RPM, plus its original book-pack with stamped service bookletFeatured on a PistonHeads article saying 'This 944 Turbo might well be one of very best. There's just enough patina to confirm the odometer's admission to 21,000 miles, but in every other regard its near immaculate and in what seems to be completely original nick'Sold previously by Autofarm to a prominent and knowledgeable Porsche aficionado217bhp, 2.5-litre engine boosted by forced induction. Clutch and gearbox uprated to suitThe Turbo also featured improved aerodynamics, an integrated front bumper, standard external oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, standard 16-inch wheels, and a slightly stiffer suspension set-upPowerful 911 front and rear brakes with Brembo 4-piston fixed calipers, 12-inch discs and ABSFollowing the international success of their nimble 924, Porsche designed an all-alloy, 2.5-litre inline-four for their new 944 which they planned to introduce in 1982. Their talented engineers were able to produce a very smooth running four-cylinder engine by utilising two counter-rotating balance shafts running at twice engine speed. The result is a large four-cylinder engine that feels as turbine-smooth as a six.Cosmetically, the 944's bodywork was revised with wider wheel arches (like that of the 924 Carrera GT), a fresh interior and upgrades to the brakes and suspension. With greater visual presence and the performance to match, better handling, stopping power and more creature comforts, the 944 was a natural step forward.A 'turbo' version of the 944 was always on the cards, and for the 1985 model year, Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, known internally as the 951. Forced induction boosted the 2.5-litre engine by a healthy 60bhp, up to 217bhp, with the clutch and gearbox uprated to suit. The Turbo also featured several other changes, such as improved aerodynamics, notably an integrated front bumper, standard external oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, standard 16-inch wheels (optional forged Fuchs alloys), and a slightly stiffer suspension set-up. The Turbo's front and rear brakes were borrowed from the Porsche 911, with Brembo 4-piston fixed calipers and 12-inch discs and ABS was also standard. The car presented here is a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo Coupé and is a C16 (UK-supplied) RHD example. It is one of the most original examples of its type we have ever offered, having been in the hands of real marque enthusiasts over the years. The car featured in a PistonHeads article saying "This 944 Turbo might well be one of very best. There's just enough patina to confirm the odometer's admission to 21,000 miles, but in every other regard its near immaculate and in what seems to be completely original nick".The adage of buying the best example you can find of anything, is very evident here - if you want a best-of-breed 944 Turbo, this car is certainly that. Never restored just maintained extremely well and used infrequently, with specialists such as Autofarm and RPM looking after it over the years, there is much to appreciate here. Supported by a comprehensive history file, numerous invoices and its original book-pack with stamped service booklet, the whole package is hard to beat. This car has formed part of a significant collection for the past few years. In preparation for the sale, the engine will be flushed, filled with fresh oil and a new filter fitted, the fuel tank drained, flushed and filled with 20 litres of fuel, fitted with a new battery and issued with a fresh MOT Certificate. A safety check will also be carried out along with an inspection report included in the history file. You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. A 'C16' UK-supplied Series 2 Cabriolet with 19,283 miles from new.One of the last examples produced in the final year of productionGleaming Crystal Silver Metallic paintwork, unmarked midnight blue interior and hoodOnly 19,283 miles from new and three previous ownersComplete with its original leather wallet containing service manuals and records, and previous MOTsIn 1989 the second series of the 944 was introduced, powered by a 210 bhp normally aspirated, double-overhead-cam 16-valve 3.0-litre version of the 944S engine, which was the largest four-cylinder engine in production at the time. The 944S2 also benefited from a revised transmission and the gearing was tweaked to better suit the torque and peak power characteristics of the 3.0 L M44/41 powerplant. The S2 had the same rounded nose and a rear valance found on the 944 Turbo model and this was the first example of the use of an integrated front bumper, where the bumper and bonnet profiles would merge smoothly with the valance, a design feature that has only now seen widespread adoption on production cars from the early nineties. In 1989, Porsche released the 944 S2 Cabriolet that featured cabriolet body built by the ASC-American Sunroof Company at Weinsberg in Germany, creating a very good looking car with excellent dynamic qualities that was rewarding to drive and well received by the motoring press. This 19,300 mile, 944 S2 Cabriolet has enjoyed the sunshine with three previous owners who were obviously fastidious and caring, as is evident from the car's proud stance and impressive appearance. We are informed it has always been garaged and maintained to the highest standards. The car's history file contains some relevant records and invoices in its leather wallet, including the service manuals and records, and previous MOTs. A fresh MOT will be issued before the sale. Built in the last year of 944 production, there can't be many 944 Cabriolets with mileage as low as this. The car positively shouts "Buy me" with its gleaming Crystal Silver Metallic paintwork, unmarked midnight blue interior and hood, and its smartly polished alloys. Inevitably, as the prices of good 911s creep ever higher, 944s, 928s, and 968s will surely follow, so now may be as good a time as any to join the party. Powered by a 210 bhp normally aspirated, DOHC 16-valve 3.0-litre, four-cylinder.You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July. Lot 579

A great practical classic with occasional four seats and the joy that is a big HealeyOriginally left-hand drive and destined for Miami, FloridaRepatriated to the UK in 2012. Fully restored and converted to right-hand driveClassically finished in gleaming British Racing Green, Black tonneauSilver wire wheels, fresh chrome and a chrome luggage rackSmart black leather interior, Wood rim steering wheel. OverdriveHeritage Certificate, US paperwork, details and photos of the restorationIntroduced in 1956 to replace the Austin-Healey 100 (later known as the 100-4), the 100-6 was a two-seat roadster produced by the British Motor Corporation, initially at Longbridge and later at Abingdon, and remained in production until 1959 when it was replaced by the 3000. Over the years, all three models have become known collectively as "The Big Healeys". A couple of inches longer than its predecessor, the Healey 100, the new model was fitted with a more powerful straight-six engine (BMC-C series previously fitted to the Austin Westminster) producing 102bhp which in 1957 was improved to 117bhp. Externally, the car differed by being slightly more streamlined, having a smaller, wider grille, an air scoop on the bonnet and a fixed windscreen. The car was marketed as being more luxurious than its predecessor, however, the luxury was obviously comparative as the 1957 brochure claims "To suit individual needs, there are numerous items of equipment such as a heater, overdrive and wire wheels which can be fitted at extra cost". Another "Wow" factor from the brochure is the availability of "Aluminium framed side-screens which have one fixed and one sliding panel for ventilation or hand signalling" The 100/6's performance was quite exciting for the period, roaring up to 60mph in just over 10 seconds and going on to 104 miles an hour at a time when a Ford Popular would struggle to reach 70mph. This latest Healey was available in two model designations, the 2+2 BN4 from 1956 onwards and 2 seat BN6 in 1958/9 and was listed in 1958 at £1,307 including purchase tax.Amongst Big Healey aficionados, the 100/6 is the one to have in terms of purity. The earlier 100/4s, whilst gorgeous to look at were a bit "agricultural" and are now becoming very expensive whilst the later 3000s were being adorned with more and more creature comforts with the consequential increase in weight. As long as the 100/6 was properly set up with attention to camber and castor and all the other factors in suspension geometry, they handled superbly and were a dream to drive. With the top down, the burble from the exhaust note was a delight in a 1950s, six-cylinder, down a country lane in a black and white movie, sort of way and on the overrun had more 'snap, crackle and pop' than a box of Rice Crispies. Offered here from the Antony Hamilton Collection is an Austin Healey 100-Six 2+2 (BN4) finished in British Racing Green with a black leather interior. The Heritage Certificate confirms that it was destined for the North American market originally finished in Ivory White and delivered to a dealer in Miami, Florida. The specification included wire wheels, overdrive and a heater. It was repatriated to the UK in 2012 when it was fully restored and professionally converted to right-hand drive. The history file contains various receipts and sales invoices from a dealer in Birmingham, Alabama from 1995. There is also a photographic record of the restoration showing the original state and the finished article. This is a great practical classic with occasional four seats and the joy that is a big Healey. You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July.
