BERNARD MYERS (BRITISH 1925-2007) Bernard Myers (Lots 98-123) IntroductionTrained as a gunner in the RAF during the Second World War, Bernard Myers studied at St Martin’s School of Art (1947-49) and Camberwell (1949-51) before studying painting at the Royal College of Art in 1951. Fellow students included John Bratby and Jack Smith, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. After graduating ARCA in 1954, Myers taught, variously at Camberwell, Hammersmith and Ealing art schools, and was senior lecturer in drawing at the Architectural Association School. At the AAS he was talent-spotted to return to the RCA, where he spent the following two decades, punctuated in 1968 and 1971 by stints as Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of technology, New Delhi. His final teaching post was as Chair of Design Technology at Brunel University (1979-85). At the RCA students such as James Dyson treasured Myers’ good advice, remembering him as ‘cheerful, irrepressible [and] rather dapper… with a tweed suit and bowtie…’ But as well as being upbeat Myers was also appreciated for his considerable range of mind and intellect. On being made a fellow of the RCA, in his welcome speech the Dean noted that Myers ‘…must without doubt be the most versatile graduate ever to emerge from the Painting School. Since joining the College in 1961 he has been, by virtue of an encyclopaedic knowledge which comfortably bestrides the boundaries between the humane and the technological, and of his superlative gifts as a teacher, in demand by virtually every School and Department within the College…’ The plus side for Myers was that teaching left him free to practise his own art exactly as he wished. As he noted: ‘Some artists find that teaching interferes with their work. I find it clarifies my work.’ Indeed, he had an unstoppable compulsion to paint, incessantly exploring a wide range of subject matter, in particular the landscapes he encountered on his varied travels, the still-lifes he returned to again and again in his studio, the nudes he painted in weekly life-classes, and his not infrequent forays into abstraction, precipitated in part by his fascination with space. He married Pamela Fildes, granddaughter of the painter Sir Luke Fildes in the early 1950s (lot 98); they lived first in Windsor and then in Kensington before moving in 1974 into one of the studios overlooking the Thames at St Peter’s Wharf, purpose built by Julian Trevelyan, next to Hammersmith Terrace (lots 121-123). He had several one-man shows in the West End, the first at the New Art Centre in 1969; his last with Austin Desmond Fine Art in 1991. He wrote two books on Goya, others on the history of sculpture and How to Look at Art, and co-edited The Macmillan Encyclopedia of Art’ (1979). He also penned articles for the magazines in The Artist (May 1988) on his highly original approach to pastel (lots 110, 111, 113-117), and in Artists and Illustrators (1995) on his Venice views (lots 118 & 119).BERNARD MYERS (BRITISH 1925-2007)MISS PAMELA FILDESsigned, titled and dated on reverse Bernard Myers / Miss Pamela Fildes / 1955-6oil on canvas122 x 91.5cm; 48 x 36in(unframed)Pamela Fildes was the granddaughter of the painter Sir Luke Fildes RA (1843-1927). Pair: Lieutenant R. B. Norton, 35th Bengal Native Infantry, who was wounded at the Tazeane Pass in September 1842 Defence of Jellalabad 1842, Flying Victory (R. B. Norton, 35th Regt. B.L.J.) contemporarily re-engraved naming in upright capitals; Cabul 1842 (R. B. Norton 35th Regt. B.L.J.) contemporarily re-engraved naming in upright capitals, both medals fitted with replacement small rings and silver bar suspension, contact marks, otherwise toned, very fine (2) £600-£800 --- Robert Bruce Norton is confirmed on the list of officers presented with medals for Jellalabad (as Lieutenant in 35th Bengal N.I.) and is also named in a list of officers who were wounded in the action of 13 September 1842, in the Tazeane Pass, two days before Pollock entered Cabul. He was court martialed on 16 July 1849 at Barrackpore for having absented himself from his quarters without leave, amongst other charges, during which time he took himself to Calcutta and did not reappear until the following day. Found guilty, he was sentenced to be ‘publicly and severely reprimanded’. The full detail of this case was reported in Allen’s Indian Mail and can be accessed online. It is possible that Norton forfeited his medals as a result of this court martial and subsequently acquired replacements which he had re-engraved to suit. Norton’s death was reported in the Gentleman’s Magazine for October 1852: ‘15 August 1852 - At St John’s-hill, Wandsworth, aged 30, Robert Bruce Norton, Lieutenant 35th Bengal Light Infantry, third surviving son of the late Sir John Davis Norton, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court at Madras.’ A ‘Typescript journal and letters of Capt (sic) Robert Bruce Norton, 35th Bengal Native Light Infantry at Jellalabad, 8 Oct 1841 to April 1842’, are held by the National Army Museum (Accession No 1968-07-224).

Previously Sylvia Mann (collection no.3209/80). Exhibited in All Cards on the Table at Leinfelden 5 October 1990-29 September 1991 (#206).Mann, All Cards on the Table, p.206 & #73 (this pack); Mann & Wayland, The Dragons of Portugal, pp.36-38 (it seems this pack is that described on p.38, and illustrated in plate XVI, as then belonging to E. Newman). See also Cary collection, NEI-1 for a more sophisticated version. According to Mann there is a similar deck in the Museum of Archaeology and Paleontology of the University of Pennsylvania. This extremely rare deck was 'hand-painted in garish colours and presented with almost unbelievable simplicity' (Mann, p.206). Sylvia Mann (see #73) believes that the accompanying manuscript note was written by a Dutch merchant or sailor. It describes the names of some of the cards, which he says were used for the game of omberen. The suits are: Kopadá, Sepada, Bulaeng (Macassar for 'gold'), and Kajoe (Kayu in Malay is 'wood'), and are indicated not only by suit marks but also somewhat by the colouring of the clothing on the court cards. The early playing cards of Sulawesi (formally Celebes), and more generally Indonesia, were heavily influenced by its trading links with Portugal.

* Transformation playing cards. Beatrice, or the Fracas, London: Rudolph Ackermann, January 1819, the complete uncut pack of 52 playing cards, comprising 13 stipple engraved plates on thin card as issued, each depicting four playing cards with classical figures and scenic backgrounds, forming the complete deck of 52 cards (French suits), full-length court cards with contemporary hand-colouring, red suits with stencilled suit signs (a couple lightly smudged, as published), pip cards transformed, light dust- or finger-soiling to some margins, queen of clubs with single spot to lower edge, knave of clubs with very faint background mark, two plates of pip cards with previously repaired closed tears (one with brown mark to 8 of diamonds and single spot to 8 of hearts), plain versos, each card approximately 90 x 63 mm, each plate approximately 19.8 x 14.4 cm, contained together in original portfolio, with stiff front and back covers, worn, one remaining side flap (partly detached), without ribbons, front cover with one of the plates reproduced as a paper label (rubbed and browned), with title at head 'Pictorial Cards', and imprint at foot dated Jany 1 1819, printed price to lower right overwritten in early ink manuscript '10/6', faint ink manuscript centrally, the portfolio 21 x 15 cm QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Collection of Dudley Ollis.Berry, Playing-Cards of the World [255]; Field 22: `One of the most artistic and imaginative transformation packs`; Ortiz-Patiño 72. Scarce in this format. The cards were not issued in playable form but were commonly cut up for use, and therefore rarely survive intact in their original uncut plates. When the plates were originally printed for use in Ackermann’s Repository of Arts, Literature, Fashion etc. they each had the plate and volume number to the upper right corner and the imprint at the foot. Field suggests that this portfolio issue was printed in 1817 before the cards appeared in the magazine, his argument being that the numbers and imprint could not be easily removed from an engraved plate. Also, some of the sheets in his (presumably undated) portfolio copy are watermarked 1817 which supports this (we cannot find any watermarks in this copy). However, we believe it is more likely that these have simply had the numbers and imprint removed for portfolio presentation. The cards appeared in Ackermann’s magazine throughout 1818, with the final sheet being issued in the January 1819 edition, which corresponds with the imprint on this portfolio.

Koudelka, Josef. Cerny trojuhelnik - Podkrusnohori - The Black Triangle - Le triangle noir. Fotografie 1990-1994. 78 nicht pag. S. als Leporello. 23,5 x 30,5 cm. OKart. (etwas lichtrandig) mit ausgeschnittenem Dreieck in der Mitte. Praha, Vesmir, 1994. Erste Ausgabe. "This book is a photographic report in black and white on the Podkrusnohori, the western tip of the infamous Black Triangle, the foothills of the Ore Mountains. Jutting out into Poland, it is one of Europe's worst devastated territories, but it is also a region that shaped the origin and future development of the Czech state. Coal mining, the first record of which dates back to 1403, has been the region's enormous wealth as well as its curse. The industrial revolution facilitated an unprecedented upsurge of the living standards but at the cost of irreversible changes in nature. 'Man is not an omniscient master of the planet who can get away with doing whatever he likes and whatever may suit him at the moment'. That introductory quotation of Václav Havel is illustrated by Josef Koudelka's photographs of the land dominated by head frames, waste heaps, factory stacks and dried-up lakes." - Sehr gutes Exemplar.
