Sir Michael Caine's Rolex. An 18K gold quartz calendar bracelet watchModel: Oysterquartz Day-DateReference: 19018/19000Date: Circa 1979Movement: 11-jewel Cal.5055 quartz, adjusted to temperature, No.0018239Dial: Sunburst champagne, applied gilt baton hour markers, black outer minute track with Roman numeral and luminous dot five minute markers, magnified date aperture at 3, day at 12, gilt tapering faceted baton hands with luminous inserts, centre secondsCase: Brushed and polished tonneau form, screw down back and crown, fluted bezel, No.5874610Strap/Bracelet: Brushed and polished 18K gold linkBuckle/Clasp: Signed folding clasp stamped VCA 7H164-2Signed: Case, dial & movementSize: 36mmFootnotes:With a watch almost always prominently upon his wrist, Sir Michael Caine has become quite the watch style icon. It is no surprise therefore that within Sir Michael's collection there have been several Rolex with each of them contributing to some of the most iconic images put forward of this phenomenal actor. As his career ascended with successes such as the hit movies Get Carter (1971) and Sleuth (1972), Sir Michael can frequently be pictured wearing one of his gold Rolex. The current lot represents his third notable foray into the world of Rolex with his purchase of an 18K gold Oysterquartz Datejust. Ever the trailblazer rather than crowd follower, Sir Michael was an early convert to the Oysterquartz acquiring his model not long after they first launched in the late 1970s. Sir Michael has confirmed that he wore this watch during numerous roles but, perhaps, most famously as Lawrence Jamieson in the 1988 movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The gold bracelet can be seen nestled within Sir Michaels crisp white suit as he toasts with Steve Martin upon the promotional posters for the film. As with all of his watches, Sir Michael did not distinguish what was exclusive for the movie set versus his private life. Captured in 1982 is a fantastic image by the celebrated American photographer Steve Schapiro (via Getty Images Ⓒ) where Sir Michael can be seen sat at his home in LA. With cigar in one hand, wine in the other, iconic glasses on - there is no other way to describe this portrait of Sir Michael than cool. Visible upon his wrist and balancing the gold hues given off by his glass of wine is his Rolex Oysterquartz, distinct from other Rolex Day-Dates by the crisp faceted edges that make this design so recognisable. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

James McDivittFirst frame from a photographic sequence documenting the first American spacewalk: Ed White floats in zero gravity over HawaiiGemini 4, 3 June 1965Vintage chromogenic print on fibre-based paper, 25.5 x 20.4 cm (10 x 8 in), NUMBERED NASA S-65-6922 [NASA photo no S-65-30431], with A KODAK PAPER watermarks on the verso (NASA/North American)Provenance: from Tim Furniss collectionFootnotes:This photograph is the first still photograph of a human in space (until this point all released images of astronauts were taken by television or monitoring cameras) and taken by another human. Ed White floated out of the spacecraft wearing a specially designed suit and gold-plated helmet to protect him against unfiltered rays of the sun, as well as emergency oxygen tank. A 25-foot long umbilical line and a tether line connect him to the spacecraft. He used a Hand-Held Manoeuvring Unit (HHMU) to manoeuvre around the spacecraft at more than 100 miles (160 kilometres) above the Pacific Ocean, while James McDivitt took photographs. Aside from being a milestone experiment, this was a thoroughly enjoyable experience for White and he returned to the spacecraft reluctantly commenting: 'It's the saddest moment in my life'. 1550-1650 AD. An Elizabethan or slightly later cylindrical copper-alloy keyless letter-combination padlock composed of: four discs originally rotatable by hand using a pin-tumbler mechanism together with one fixed disc, mounted on an axle with trapezoidal cross-section and two circular arms, joined by a bow shackle above; four of the inner discs each bearing six unevenly spaced letters, numbers or symbols in punched letter type, the outer two arms of the lock bearing five; from top to bottom and left to right, the discs read: 'Left frame: RS3+O / disc 1: FC+3FO / disc 2: KVSBFX / disc 3: GDISME / disc 4: YDLNQM / disc 5: [blank] / right frame: ASI+F'; the lock is currently in the closed position and reads 'OXEN' directly beneath the shackle, indicating that a second word is required to release it, possibly a five letter word with the first letter being one on the left hand fixed frame. Cf. The Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id. PUBLIC-3BA66D, for similar; cf. British Museum, M&ME 1992,0410.1, which opens to 'MARCI' and was possibly produced in the Netherlands. Portable Antiquities Scheme, record id.SF-8892, for this padlock; cf. Gaimster, D. FSA The Archaeology of personal security: Metal-Detector Finds of Early Modern Letter-Combination Padlocks, in The Antiquaries Journal, 85, 2005, pp.374-81. 35.4 grams, 32mm high (1 1/4"). Found whilst searching with a metal detector near Eyke, Suffolk, UK, by Roger Fletcher on Friday 1st March 2002. Accompanied by a copy of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) report number SF-8892 (electronic and original paper version"). Accompanied by a copy of the white paper By David Gaimster, FSA, where this object has been drawn and published. The password to open the lock is probably ROBIN. The BM's entry records that 'Jon Millington comments on 19 September 2008 that Buteo's Logistica, Lyon 1559, in BL, depicts an identical lock.' The seriffed Roman capitals punched into the lock on offer here are comparable to those used in the printed books of the early-mid 17th century AD. The discovery of multiple similar examples could suggest a common manufacturer. Alternatively, the producer may have sold blanks to traders who then personalised the locks to suit a buyer. The production of such locks reflects the growing need for the protection of personal goods in this period. Early modern Europe became increasingly lawless, with forcible entry constituting around a quarter of recorded crime in late medieval Britain, while the proliferation of lockable chests and other containers reflects attempts to protect personal portable possessions from theft, with a growth in the sophistication of key and lock manufacture from the 16th century onwards. Fine condition.
