According to surviving records, Macao was amongst the leading producers of silk works for the Spanish and Portuguese markets. From as early as the seventeenth century, the textiles manufactured for the Western markets were often made to order from patterns supplied by the merchants. In addition, the Sino-Spanish silk trade, prompted by the large number of Chinee embroiders working in Manila from the 17th century, made it possible for Chinese designs to reflect the Spanish taste. The East India and the Dutch East India Company were largely responsible for the great economic success bringing Chinese silks, including silk embroidered coverlets, to accompany 'Chinoserie'-themed furnishings produced for the European market. Compare with a related yellow-ground silk embroidered bedspread, late 18th century, from the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, illustrated by V.Wilson, Chinese textiles, London, 2005, pl.29.A related yellow-ground silk embroidered panel, 18th century, was sold at Sotheby's London, 1 November 2016, lot 70.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
