1965 Vanden Plas Princess 4-Litre 'R' SaloonRegistration no. EJW 359CChassis no. V/RS31523Engine no. 40FBAH1674Odometer reading: 15,806MOT: Exempt *Automatic transmission*Previous long-term enthusiast family ownership*An older restoration*Well maintainedOne of Britain's most illustrious coachbuilders, chiefly remembered for its sublime Vintage-era Bentleys, the firm of Vanden Plas was acquired by Austin in 1946 and reinvented as a marque in its own right some years later. From the late 1940s onwards Vanden Plas engaged in bodying top-of-the-line Austins before marque status, albeit courtesy of 'badge engineering', arrived for 1960. When the Austin A99 was upgraded to A110 specification in 1961, the equivalent Vanden Plas Princess followed suit, becoming the Mark II. The final development saw the Princess offered with the six-cylinder Rolls-Royce FB60 engine: a short-stroke 3,909cc variant of that used in the Silver Cloud. Extensive revisions were made to accommodate the Rolls-Royce engine and the new model – known as the Princess 4-Litre R – was most enthusiastically received. Sadly, after the initial enthusiasm wore off, sales slowed to a trickle and only 6,555 cars had been built when the model was withdrawn in 1968. This restored Princess R previously belonged for a long time to a family of classic car enthusiasts, passing through the hands of various family members while being used sparingly as part of their sizeable collection. The car has been maintained by Penguin Motors of Cambridge and comes with numerous bills relating to its restoration and maintenance together with photographs of the former. MoTs on file date back to 1995 and the car also comes with a V5C document. An honest car, very well looked after, this handsome Princess R drives very well (the automatic transmission works smoothly) and is the very exemplar of quality motoring.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 70/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Registration No: CEC 888DChassis No: GAN347147MOT: ExemptCurrent ownership since 2002Offered with a collection of invoices and old MOT'sRestored in the early 2000's with photographs includedRecently fitted with a new front bumper and windscreenFitted with Minilite style alloy wheel and hardtop includedBy the '60s, the MG Car Company had long since been absorbed into the giant British Motor Corporation (BMC). In an effort to fully capitalise on the many respected names in its care, the company embarked upon a programme of 'badge engineering' and the new MG Midget was essentially a MKII Austin-Healey Sprite in a slightly different suit of clothes. In christening its new small sports car 'Midget', BMC revived a name made famous by a range of pre-war MGs. Certainly, the Midgets, old and new, shared the same basic concept - i.e. they were two-seaters clothed in a simple, relatively light body and equipped with front-mounted engines driving the rear wheels. Moreover, they had suspension and brake components etc common to other cars, making them easy to replace or repair and cheap to service. The Midget MK I was introduced in 1961 and ran for a couple of years only with the 948cc engine. In 1962 it was upgraded and the 1098cc engine was fitted and this ran for three years, but surprisingly less examples were made. It was in essence an Austin Healey Sprite with a more attractive grille and side chrome trim; and from 1962 disk brakes were standard.Vendor Condition Ratings:Bodywork: 'Good'Engine: 'Good'Electrical Equipment: 'Good'Paintwork: 'Good'Gearbox: 'Good'Interior Trim: 'Good' Footnote: For more information, please contact:James McWilliamjames.mcwilliam@handh.co.uk07943 584760

1953 Lancia Aurelia B20 GT Series III CoupéRegistration no. 991 HYPChassis no. B20-2730•Iconic Italian Gran Turismo•First owned by Adnan Khashoggi•Present ownership since the 1990s•Extensively restored•Up-rated (140bhp) engine•Recently re-commissionedFootnotes:Introduced in 1907, the Vincenzo Lancia's first car showed an independence of thought and defiance of convention that would remain associated with the marque well into the modern era. Lancia recommenced production after WW2 with the Aprilia and its smaller cousin the Ardea, but waiting in the wings was yet another groundbreaking design: the Aurelia. Lancia's classic Aurelia, the first car ever to employ a V6 engine, was launched at the 1950 Turin Motor Show. Designed in wartime by Francesco de Virgilio, the 1,754cc 60-degree V6 was of all-aluminium construction and used overhead valves operated via short pushrods instead of Lancia's traditional overhead camshafts. An advanced unitary construction design, the Aurelia retained Lancia's 'sliding pillar' independent front suspension, first seen on the Lambda, but used a novel semi-trailing arm layout at the rear, another world first. The transmission too, was unusual, comprising a two-piece prop-shaft and combined gearbox/rear transaxle on which were mounted the inboard brakes, though for once this was not an entirely new departure. The B10 saloon was joined the following year by the Pinin Farina-styled B20 Coupé, a fastback '2+2' on a shortened wheelbase which, with its combination of sports car performance and saloon car practicality, can be said to have introduced the Gran Turismo concept to the world. The Aurelia engine had been increased to 1,991cc in 1951 and it was this unit in up-rated form that went into the B20. Lighter and higher geared than the saloon, the B20 was good for a top speed of over 100mph. Stunning the motor racing world, a mildly race-developed B20 driven by chain-smoking, brandy-swigging Giovanni Bracco finished 2nd in the 1951 Mille Miglia, beaten only by Luigi Villoresi's 4.1litre works Ferrari! It is worth noting that the nimble Aurelia was actually faster than the Ferrari over the mountain passes north of Florence. Introduced in 1953, the 3rd and subsequent series B20s were powered by a 2,451cc, 118bhp version of the pushrod V6, while 4th-series onwards cars had De Dion rear suspension instead of the original semi-trailing-arm arrangement. The Lancia factory publication, 'The History of Lancia 1906-1989', states that 1,231 2.0-litre B20 GTs were produced (Series I and II) plus a further 1,880 2½-litre cars (Series III to VI). An engineering tour de force clothed in sublime coachwork by Italy's foremost carrozzeria, the Aurelia B20 represents for many the zenith of Lancia's post-war production. This B20 GT's original owner was Adnan Khashoggi, the Saudi Arabian businessman known for his controversial business deals and lavish lifestyle. The original registration was '7 AMK', which presumably was retained when the car was sold. The original logbook shows the date of first registration as 4th January 1954 and Khashoggi as first owner. The registration later changed to the current '991 HYP'. The vendor purchased the Aurelia in the 1990s from Tim Burrett, who had had it stored in a barn for many years. The vendor stripped the car and the body was restored by marque specialists Tanc Barrett and painted twice, latterly and to a very high standard by Autocraft in Telford. The exterior colour was originally two-tone grey (as it was when the car was acquired by the vendor) and is now Lancia dark blue. The B20's standard front seat is a split bench type. These original seats are freshly trimmed in grey leather with all original runners, etc and come with the car, but there are currently two period style bucket seats fitted, improving the driving position. These bucket seats were available at the time, and it is understood that both the Hawthorn and the Fangio cars had them, as did some of the works competition cars. This car's cylinder block has been changed to later Series IV block, which uses Vandervell bearings rather than the Series I/II/III white metal bearings which are more difficult to renew. The engine's external appearance is the same. The engine has been dynamometer tested to produce over 140bhp and excellent torque at 5,000rpm. This is considerably more than the standard unit's claimed 118bhp, which in most cases was nearer 100 in reality. The engine has been rebuilt with a Nardi-style up-rated camshaft, modified flywheel, and twin-choke Weber carburettors as per the works cars, and has been balanced. The engine spent around 8-10 hours on the test bed at Tim Adams Racing and since then has probably done no more than five hours in the car. The test sheets are available, and with its more powerful engine we are advised that this Aurelia goes very well. The transmission was rebuilt by Tim Burrett with new first/reverse gears and bearings, etc. The transmission likewise has done only five hours since the rebuild and is said to have an excellent gear change and synchromesh. A floor change has been fitted rather than the standard column change. Brakes are Series VI twin-leading-shoe at the front, which was a common modification in the day and a big improvement. The wheels fitted are similar to the original style but the rims are to suit 15' tyres, which gives a much greater tyre choice than standard (the original wheels and aluminium hubcaps are included in the sale). The Aurelia has been standing for a little over two years, but in the last few weeks has been re-commissioned by CMC and we are advised is once again running and stopping well. Overall a sensibly upgraded and smartly presented example worthy of the closest inspection. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 2434

English Provincial School, 1612, Portrait of Mrs Smyth and her young son, Inscribed and dated 1612, Oil on panel, 66 x 53 cm.The portrait almost certainly depicts the wife and son of John Smyth (1567-1641), historian and author of The Berkeley Manuscript. The work was published under the title The Berkeley Manuscripts: The Lives Of The Berkeleys, Lords Of The Honour, Castle And Manor Of Berkeley, In The County Of Gloucester, From 1066 To 1618, With A Description Of The Hundred Of Berkeley And Of Its Inhabitants.Smyth wrote the manuscripts for the Berkeley family who retain their seat at Berkeley Castle to this day, in an unbroken line of more than 850 years. The Manuscript details the lives of people that Smyth himself would have known and is credited with providing an extraordinary insight to the lives and times of the 1500s and 1600s.Smyth also completed two other important works: The Lives of the Berkeleys and Men and Armour for Gloucestershire in 1608.The child in this portrait is John Smyth the Younger (1611-92), who followed his father as steward of the Gloucestershire lands of Lord Berkeley and continued his practice of writing and archiving papers. The inscription above the childs head in the portrait notes that he is pictured in his first year, which tallies with the 1612 date inscribed opposite. For the practical purpose of toilet training, from the mid 16th to late 19th century, it was the custom of well-to-do families to dress all young children in gowns like this until the age of six or seven when they were breeched or first put in trousers.Smyth the Youngers writing shed light on how families were reluctant to take sides in the Civil War.J.H. Cooke, referred to on the auction catalogue cutting pasted to the verso, was James Herbert Cooke, Land Steward to the Right Honourable Lord Fitzhardinge, the illegitimate grandson of the 5th Earl of Berkeley. Cooke was also the Local Secretary of the Bristol and Gloucestershire Archaeological Society, founded in 1876, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. In 1873 he published the book A Sketch of the History of Berkeley, and was author of other books too.He is credited with writing a number of articles for the society, including On the Great Berkeley Law-Suit of the 15th and 16th Centuries, A Chapter of Gloucestershie History (1878-79), and Wanswell Court, and its Occupants for Seven Centuries (1881). The articles appear in Volumes 3 and 6, respectively of the societys Transactions and both draw on the Smyth papers.Provenance: A label on the reverse suggests the picture belonged to a J. H. Cooke Esq, and was included in his collection sale held on March 24th 1886, lot no 120.Condition Report: General wear to the picture, consistent with age, with small surface scratches across much of the board. Chipping and cracks to back of the board and edges. Approximately 1cm deep indentation along all edges of the board, indicating previous framing. Long, thin vertical crack from top to bottom of the left-hand side of the board, with accompanying vertical section of canvas lining to reverse of the picture, indicating repair work.

A.L.S., Margeret Bourke-White, three pages, 4to, Darien, 24th October 1954, to Edna Robb Webster. Bourke-White informs her correspondent that she is sending her two photographs under separate cover, explaining 'In one I am sitting in the Kennebec River in Maine taking pictures in a bathing suit; in the other I am in tropical helmet and rain cape riding on a mule thru the mountains of Honduras (working with priests on the Jesuit story - riding to very remote villiages (sic) thru the jungle', further apologising that there has been so much red tape regarding the Life pictures, 'All I can say about that is that it used to be much worse. There was a time when almost nothing that was taken for Life could be reproduced outside, but they've loosened up on that policy a great deal. Since I couldn't tell them for what magazine the pix were intended (note blank spaces in stamps on the backs) - just let me know soon as you can' and continuing 'I fully understand the reasons given in your letter. Only please stay away from the Ladies Home Journal, and from the McCalls-Good Housekeeping group, as my book publishers may do something in these directions - later - when my own book is finished…..I'm glad to have you do it, on the basis of your excellent article, and am only sorry there has been such delay at this end. Good luck on it.' In concluding Bourke-White adds that she will not be in California until next spring, 'it is for a good reason. The aero-color shots of Food & Harvest regions went so well that Life has already put the story to bed & no room for more. It was laid out just this week - and will be the lead story in the magazine - 10 pages in color - I'm very proud & dazzled by it as you can imagine for it's unusual to give such space to a piece like this. It will be called The Look of the Land, and will be in the special food issue of Jan. 1. '55'. A letter of good content for its references to Bourke-White's photography, and in particular with Life. A SILVER-GILT AND PLIQUE-À-JOUR ENAMEL IMPERIAL PRESENTATION TANKARDPavel Ovchinnikov with Imperial Warrant, Moscow, circa 1889the body enriched with scrolling floral cloisonné enamel motifs within twisted wirework panels, flaring to octagonal arched segments delineated by beadwork and spiral columns, raised upon conforming base with interlacing strapwork, the underside inscribed 'Souvenir DE S.A.I. Le Grand Duc Georges Alexandrovitch de Russie to Col. W.F.Cody, Paris 1889', the base revealing plique-à-jour Imperial Eagle within foliate ground, bracket handle with scaling joined to trefoil thumbpiece at hinge, the lid with smaller plique-à-jour panel within border of butterflies and birds within floral ground, 88 standard height: 16cm (6in).Footnotes:ProvenancePresented by Grand Duke Georgii Aleksandrovich (1871-99) to William Cody ['Buffalo Bill'] (1846-1917), according to inscription on base.Architectural in form and featuring brightly coloured filigree enamel panels, granulation and interlacing strapwork, the current tankard is an adaptation of the Turkish seventeenth century prototype featured in the Drevnosti Gosudarstva Rossiiskogo (Antiquities of the Russian State), compiled by Fedor Solntsev in 1850s and instantly adopted by Russian silversmiths as their favourite source of the artistic inspiration. The firm of Pavel Ovchinnikov made several identical tankards, a few of which were acquired by the Imperial Cabinet and members of the Romanov family to be used as diplomatic gifts and presentation pieces. In 1897, during the official visit of the French President Félix Faure to Saint Petersburg, one of the officers of the French squadron received a very similar tankard as an official gift. (Fig 1). In 1889 an identical tankard was presented to an anonymous official by G. Netchaev-Maltsov (Sotheby's, Geneva, 13-15 November 1995, lot 446).The Hillwood Museum and Gardens in Washington, DC has in its collection another example identical to the current tankard but without an inscription identifying the occasion for which the gift may have been presented. In addition to their traditional shape and décor, each tankard was decorated with plique-à-jour panels depicting the Russian Imperial Eagles amidst floral fields. The presence of the Imperial symbols further underscored the importance of such gifts as an official expression of friendship and appreciation. Among this group of presentation tankards, the current example stands out as the most historically significant. According to the inscription, Grand Duke Georgii Aleksandrovich presented it to William Cody, one of the most famous and popular Americans of the late 19th century.William Cody (1846-1917), who earned his nickname 'Buffalo Bill' by hunting 4,280 buffalo in eighteen months, was a soldier during the Civil War, a scout, a Pony Express rider, an invaluable tracker and experienced gunman, who at the end of his life had come to symbolize the American frontier and the nation's spirit of adventure. Cody's frontier experience and positive public image was particularly helpful during official visits of foreign dignitaries to the Western territories. During the highly publicised visit of Grand Duke Aleksei Aleksandrovich to the USA in 1871-1872, Cody was instrumental in organising a hunting adventure on a scale that surpassed anything that the Russian Grand Duke, an experienced hunter and sportsman himself, had experienced before. When the Grand Duke Aleksei, the third son of Tsar Alexander II, arrived at the hunting camp in Nevada, 'Buffalo Bill' was waiting mounted on a splendid horse. Over six feet tall, Cody cut an impressive figure in his spangled buckskin suit, a coat trimmed with fur, and a black slouch hat. Cody's leadership and assistance during the hunt was later kindly acknowledged by the Grand Duke who presented Buffalo Bill with gifts that are now part of the collection at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyoming, USA. It was probably with the encouragement and at the recommendation of his royal uncle that twenty years later, while vacationing in Paris, Grand Duke Georgii met William Cody.In the summer of 1889, William Cody was on his second tour of Europe with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, a highly successful circus-like attraction that included horseback parades, re-enactments of famous Civil War battles, Indian attacks on wagon trains, and stage coach races. The show was enormously popular and propelled Cody to worldwide fame. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria, Russian Grand Duke Michael, and the King of Denmark were among the guests who attended the show during the tour of England two year earlier. In 1889 the Wild West show became the main attraction of the Paris Exposition Universelle and a 'must see' venue for many foreign visitors flocking to the French capitol that summer. Grand Duke Georgii Aleksandrovich (1871-99), the son of Emperor Alexander III and the brother of the Russian Emperor Nicholas II, arrived in Paris on August 26 for a few days of sightseeing. Very bright and capable, he was seen by many of his contemporaries as 'intellectual and magnanimous, with an engaging personality', and 'the one who could have become a strong and popular tsar' (1). Sadly, in the early 1890s Grand Duke Georgii was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent most of his time travelling in pursuit of the proper medical treatments, eventually settling in the small town of Abas-Tuman in the Caucasus. Two days after his arrival in Paris the Grand Duke noted in his dairy: 'We had visited the Exposition today. Afterwards we went to see Buffalo Bill [show]. It was most interesting' (2). The scale of the performance and larger than life personality of its founder must have left an unforgettable impression on the eighteen year old Grand Duke, who arranged to have this very special gift delivered to William Cody on his behalf.1.
