A pair of green trousers said to belong to Sir Jeffery Hudson (1619 to circa 1682), dwarf to the court of Henrietta Maria and Charles I, the hems of the green diamond diapered material braided and with three buttons to each leg, 31cm (12.25 in) from the waistband to the hemline, the ink attribution on a card from the Earl of Abercorn Sir Jeffrey Hudson was the court dwarf to Queen Henrietta Maria and Charles I. He was renowned at court for his fine, perfect proportions and tiny size - his height was recorded as 45cm. He came to the Queen’s notice served up in a pie wearing a miniature suit of armour. As a Roman Catholic, he fought with the Royalists during the English Civil War. He was subsequently captured by Barbary pirates and was kept as a slave for the next 25 years. He eventually returned to England, but anti-Catholic sentiment was strong and he never recovered his fame or, indeed, his court pension. He died in 1680 and was buried in a pauper’s grave.
