John Piper C.H. (British, 1903-1992)Harbour through a window signed and dated 'John Piper 1934' (lower right)gouache and collage38.1 x 50.3 cm. (15 x 19 3/4 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, from whom probably acquired byMrs Amber Blanco White, thence by family descentPrivate Collection, U.K.The present work was executed the year following Piper's election to the Seven and Five Society. By this date, the exhibiting society had developed from its somewhat conservative routes to become the hub of modernism in Britain. Whilst Piper's compositions of this period share a kinship to fellow Seven and Five artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood, and their adoption of British naïve art, his inclusion of collage is drawn primarily from the Cubist works of Braque and Picasso. Piper's selected subjects were often the seaside towns along the south coast, including Rye and Newhaven, the topography of which he would occasionally remould to suit his compositional design. For these collages he included various materials including photographs, engravings, text and, as in the present example, foil and tobacco packaging. However, his dominant material for such works are cake doilies, a rather peculiarly English object. In many works these doilies form equally twee lace curtains, which not only accentuates the quaintness of the seaside, but rather amusingly provide an anglicised framing to the continental treatment that had well and truly permeated the shores of the scene beyond. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Jim Butcher (American, B. 1944) "Santa and Sleigh over Rooftop" Signed and dated (1984) lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally used on the Fleetwood Combination First Day Cover for the U.S. Christmas 1984 stamps issued October 30, 1984. In the early 1800s, America's traditional Christmas time gift-giver was St. Nicholas, a tall, rather stern-looking figure clad in bishop's robes. Brought over to the New World by Dutch settlers, this seasonal character was called Sinterklaas and was aided in his work by a single reindeer. To America's English-speaking children, Sinterklaas became Santa Claus. And as his name changed, Santa's image changed as well. In his Knickerbocker's History of New York, published in 1809, author Washington Irving drew a decidedly different visual picture of Santa Claus. Gone was the stately, patrician look of the original St. Nicholas. In his stead, Irving portrayed a jolly fellow who closely resembled New York's Dutch settlers. Wearing baggy breeches and a broad-billed hat, this pipe-smoking character rode a wagon through the night sky and dropped presents down chimneys as he passed. Clement C. Moore penned his classic Christmas tale in 1822, and in his story Santa's appearance had altered considerably. Clad in a red suit bound with white fur, this chubby Santa slid down chimneys to deliver his toys and drove a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer whose names Moore also immortalized: "Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer! Now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen!" Image Size: 15.25 x 13.25 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B99043)

In the late 1950s, Stirling Moss was involved in designing a race suit for Dunlop and continued over many years to favour these lightweight, light blue suits. He had them tailor-made in Bangkok, a favourite place of Stirling's. He once stated to our vendor that the "Quality was better and more importantly they are cheaper" which was typical of the prudent businessman he was. This is the actual racing suit which Stirling wore at Le Mans in 2011 whilst racing his newly restored Porsche. After qualifying, Stirling arrived in the pits, exited the car and announced his retirement from racing to Radio Le Mans after an incredible 60 years. Our vendor was present with him as he had known Stirling would retire at Le Mans and travelled down with him.A book with images of Stirling wearing this actual race suit whilst racing and retiring that day will accompany the item which is, complete with a woven BRDC badge and sponsors labels.Gifted to our vendor on return to London at Stirling's Mayfair home. Please contact Shan Stokes on 07890 0933372 / shan@silverstoneauctions.com to discuss the lot in more detail. Lot 1158

1957 BSA Gold Star CB 32, 350cc. Registration number 343 UYK (non transferrable). Frame number CB32 508. Engine number BB32 GS 1026 In 1937, a specially prepared Empire Star 500 ridden by the great Wal Handley achieved a 100mph lap of the Brooklands track on its way to a debut race victory and an award of the Gold Star that would give BSA's new super sports model its evocative name. Possibly the most successful production four-stroke single racing motorcycle ever, the post-war Gold Star formed the mainstay of clubman's racing in the 1950s. In fact, it was the model's domination of the Isle of Man Clubman's TT which led to the event being dropped after Gold Star rider Bernard Codd's 1956 Senior/Junior double victory. Post-WW2, the Gold Star did not return to the BSA range until 1949. First displayed at the Earls Court Show in 1948, the B32 350cc Goldie boasted the telescopic front fork first introduced on BSAs larger models for 1946 and came equipped with a new alloy cylinder barrel and cylinder head. For 1950 a 500cc version ? the B34 ? was added to the range, and this larger Goldie was the first to switch to the new die-cast top-end, with separate rocker box, in 1951. The 350 followed suit in 1952 and the pair continued as the "BB'" Gold Stars after the new swinging arm frame was introduced in 1953. UYK was issued with an age related registration in February 2015 supported by a dating certificate from North Leicester Motorcycles. Both the frame and engine numbers coming from that years numbers. In the 1970?s/80?s the bike was raced by Mr Ashley Brooks of Lincolnshire, but no other history is known for the bike. A period one sided 8? front brake is fitted and the forks benefit from a Taylordow Superleggera top yoke and double damping rods. The engine has a new big end, mains, 10:1 compression piston and MK1 Amal Concentric carb, all mated to a believed reconditioned RRT2 close ratio gearbox. Sold with V5C and dating certificate.

Based upon Rob Bottin's iconic 'robo' suit design, Mike Bryan produced the perfect poster to complement his graphics. A truly striking image for Paul Verhoeven's ultra violent sci-fi masterpiece "Robocop". One of the defining movies of the 80's "Robocop" is fondly remembered and spawned a popular TV show, two sequels, comic books and was recently remade as a 'big budget' CGI sci-fi actioner. From original year of release 1987, this excellent folded (as issued) example presents and displays near perfectly and is likely unused. 27" x 41" (69 x 104 cm)Additional Information: NSS #870047Condition: ExcellentUnrestored, folded (as issued) with general light handling wear and likely unusedArtist: Mike Bryan£50 - 100VAT Status: M
