Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1950s - World Series Rivals" Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c World Series Rivals stamp issued May 26, 1999. Baseball has always been America's great national pastime. In 1876, the National League of Professional Baseball Clubs was organized. The rival American League followed suit in 1901. As World War II came to a close, many of the sport's most talented players returned to the game from overseas duty. Subsequently, baseball fever swept the nation during the 1950s. Who could forget such Brooklyn greats as Don Newcombe, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese and Jackie Robinson? The Yanks boasted stars like Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, Billy Martin, Yogi Berra and Phil Rizzuto. In 1951, the first baseball game was nationally televised -- a three-game playoff between the New York Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers for the National League crown. In 1952, the American League's New York Yankees and the National League's Brooklyn Dodgers met for baseball's premier event, the World Series. The Yankees swept the Series four games to three. The two teams met again in the following year's World Series. Again, the Yankees came out on top, winning 4-2 in games. In 1955, the Yankees were singing a different song as the Dodgers swept the Series four games to three. The next year, however, the Yanks were back in top form, winning the 1956 World Series four games to three. Image Size: 15 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 23 x 16 in. Unframed. (B16417 / B16418)
Michael Garland (American, B. 1952) "Christmas/Girl Dreaming of Santa Claus" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Dreaming of Santa stamp issued October 8, 1996. Christmas is the time of year when children are caught up in the magic of Santa Claus. They believe the miraculous story of a generous and jolly fat man in a red suit, who sports a white beard with a twinkle in his eye. If children listen closely, they can hear the faint jingle of Santa's sleigh bells as reindeer pull his sleigh across the skies, bringing wonderful gifts for good little boys and girls all over the world. The traditional myth of Santa Claus originated in the fourth century from Saint Nicholas, who served as bishop in the city of Myra in Asia Minor. Known for his generosity and love of children, he gradually assumed the legendary status of the giver of gifts during the Christmas season. After the Protestant Reformation, the traditional character of Saint Nicholas as the bearer of gifts was replaced by the Christ Child, called Christkindl in parts of Germany and Switzerland. Kris Kringle was derived from this name and was portrayed as an angel-like figure who brings gifts on Christmas. In England, Saint Nicholas appeared as a gentleman wearing a long coat and a beaver hat, and became known as Father Christmas. The American version of Santa Claus was developed when 19th century writers and illustrators portrayed Saint Nicholas as a chubby, jolly man with a sleigh of reindeer. These characters continue to bring joy to the hearts of children all over the world as they symbolize generosity and good will during the Christmas season. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 16.75 x 15 in. Unframed. (B15543)
Surely the ultimate F355, an immaculate, low mileage, manual box Berlinetta with carbon seats.A UK-supplied, right-hand drive, manual gearbox, Berlinetta with gleaming Nero paintworkSuperb black/grey interior with the highly sought after carbon bucket seat optionOnly 17,500 miles at the time of cataloguing supported by a comprehensive service historyFull mechanical overhaul from front to back in 2019 at a cost of £11,000Offered with original Ferrari leather book pack, tools, V5c and an MOT valid until June 2021Of the 408 UK supplied manual F335's, just 11 had been factory finished in blackInheriting the proportions of its predecessor, the F355 was outwardly a much better-resolved proposition, both aesthetically and aerodynamically. However, beneath the fabulous styling and smoother skin, were further major advancements, including power steering, variable damping, and a 100cc engine enlargement. The longitudinally mounted 3496cc V8 generated a market-leading 380 horsepower at a spine-tingling 8,250 rpm and the gearbox now had six speeds with a revised synchromesh making gear changes so much smoother. New electronically adjustable shock absorbers varied their stiffness within milliseconds to suit the road surface and the result of all these developments was evident around Ferrari's 1.86 mile Fiorano test track when the F355 was two seconds a lap faster than the 12-cylinder 512 TR.Sitting on the cusp between analogue and digital, the F355 is considered the forerunner of all modern Ferraris and, as the last of the hand-built cars before the 360 and later descendants moved to mass production, will inevitably slip into the role of 'Classic Ferrari' with ease becoming increasingly sought after as time goes by.On offer here is a truly stunning F355 with striking black paintwork and black/grey interior including the highly sought after carbon bucket seat option. It spent a period of time, correctly stored off the road probably explaining the modest mileage of just 17,500 at the time of consignment. In 2018, it was released from storage and subjected to a complete mechanical overhaul from front to back at a cost just shy of £11,000 carried out by Ferrari specialists, AML Performance Ltd. in Macclesfield. This included; cambelt, pulleys and tensioner, clutch and clutch bearings, front and rear brakes, period-correct front and rear tyres, water pump and ancillary belts and hoses.Prior to the extensive recommissioning service, it had obviously been well looked after as is evident from the comprehensive service record including many belt changes by Ferrari main dealers, Maranello in Egham and Lancaster in Colchester. The car's most recent service was in May 2019 by Stratstone Ferrari in Wilmslow at a cost of £2,000 detailed on a copy invoice in the owner's file. In total, around £18,000 has been invested in the last nine months to return this wonderful Ferrari to the condition in which you see it today.Every iteration of the F355 is desirable, however, if you really enjoy extending your Ferrari, the Berlinetta with a manual gearbox and carbon buckets is undoubtedly the way to go. This is a really lovely example offered with its original Ferrari book pack, tools, V5c, an MOT until June 2022 and appears very sensibly guided.*Forming part of A Sale of Ferraris in association with Ferrari Owners' Club of Great Britain, the buyer of this lot will be entitled to one years free membership with Ferrari Owners Club of Great Britain* SpecificationMake: FERRARIModel: F355Year: 1996Chassis Number: ZFFPR41C000103186Registration Number: N711 WPFTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 17500 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Grey

Playing cards.- Della Bella (Stefano) Jeux Historiques des Rois de France, Reines renommees, Geographie et Metamorphose, complete series of 4 sets of educational playing cards in 1 vol., 12pp. preliminaries comprising printed title, playing instructions and privilege (dated 1644), 4 complete sets of engraved playing cards comprising title and 52 plates, except for Rois de France which has title and 39 plates (as issued), a few plates loose and a couple misbound, but generally clean and with full margins, minor light foxing and finger-soiling, title of Queens with slight water-stain to corner, contemporary calf, worn, upper joint repaired, 12mo, Paris, Chez Nicolas le Clerc et Florent le Comte, 1698.⁂ Very rare to find complete and in such good condition. The complete series of four educational playing card sets commissioned by Cardinal Mazarin for the instruction of Louis XIV, who ascended to the throne in 1643 under the regency of his mother. They were prepared by Jean Desmarests, a member of the French Academy, and first printed in 1644 under the Paris imprint of Henri Le Gras and Florentin Lambert. After Lambert's death the plates were sold to Florent le Comte who added suit-marks of spades, clubs, hearts, and diamonds, and reprinted them in book form in 1698. It is curious that in this copy the imprint "F. Le Conte" [sic] occurs on the engraved title leaf for the Mythology series but the three other series of playing cards still retain the original "Henri le Gras" imprint [from 1644). The Kings begin with Pharamond and Clodion and end with young Louis (King of Hearts); in some instances, as many as five kings of France are featured on one card, each numbered and listing the length of his reign. The Queens begin with Martesie, queen of the Amazons, and end with Anne of Austria, the mother of King Louis - a single adjective is given at the upper right corner describing each one: pious, cruel, unfortunate, saintly, wise, brave, etc. Geography has a title card showing a twin-hemisphere map and the cards themselves comprise emblems of individual countries (divided into four sections, each a different continent): the Americas are represented by Peru, Mexico, Canada [Nouvelle France], Virginia, Florida, Yucatan, Nicaragua, Quivira [in Wichita, Kansas], Chile, Brazil, Popaian [Columbia], and Castile d'or [i.e. Panama]. Mythology ("jeu des fables") represent the Greek myths, including the stories of the nine Muses, Mercury, Neptune, Pygmalion, Hercules, Jason, Apollo, Narcissus, and Medusa."They are all extremely interesting and of much rarity, and from an artistic standpoint are of value as the work of the famous Florentine engraver Stefano della Bella" (Hargrave, History of Playing Cards, pp. 58-59).
East India Company.- Read (Alexander, officer in the East India Company, c. 1753, d. 1804) Report 1st. of the Colar [Kolar, Mysore] District [to Charles Earl Cornwallis], manuscript fair copy, c. 140. (incomplete at end), numerous tears, browned, edges chipped, unbound, large 4to, Bangalore, 1791.⁂ A series of manuscript reports by Alexander Read, the first to Charles Cornwallis. Read was appointed superintendent of the Baramahal, and had worked in the intelligence and supply unit during the Third Mysore War, arriving in India in 1772 after receiving a commission as an officer cadet in 1770. He was the oldest but illegitimate son of a customs sloop officer from Dundee. Returning to Britain in 1800, only his failing health had persuaded him to leave India, where he spent all of his adult life. However, arriving in London after thirty years in India and finding that the climate did not suit him, he left for Malta, where he died in 1804. He never married but had one son and three daughters by two different women.
Edward Clifford (British 1844-1907)A group portrait of The Broadlands Conference Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour with scratching out Signed and dated 1887 (lower right) 169 x 263cm (66½ x 103½ in.)Provenance:The Church Army, by 1887The Keswick Convention, by 1964Private Collection. Literature:Mrs R Cholmeley, Edward Clifford, London: The Church Army Book Room, 1907, p 42 and pp 86-94, reproduced opposite p 87.Edward Clifford, Father Damien and Others, London: The Church Army Book Room, 1904(?), p 34.This impressive group portrait, painted on a monumental scale, celebrates the Broadlands Conferences of the Higher Life which took place between 1874 and 1888 at Broadlands in Hampshire the country estate of the William and Georgina Cowper-Temple. In the picture he is seen in a tweed suit seated at the table with his wife in the upper right corner. William had an illustrious political career as a member of Parliament for over forty-five years, Private Secretary to his uncle Lord Melbourne and groom-in-waiting to Queen Victoria. With his second wife he shared an interest in Evangelical Christianity and embarked on a search for religious enlightenment. Georgina had a particular interest in mysticism and mixed with leading spiritualist figures from Britain, American and Europe, attending several séances. The annual conferences they founded brought together their religious interests and the beautiful surroundings at Broadlands aimed to create a "foretaste of heaven" with many of the services taking place under the Beech trees or in the orangery.Their interests were precipitated by the Holiness movement in America and the 1870s saw the emergence of the Higher Life movement in England which was named after William Boardman's book The Higher Christian Life (published in 1858) the main aim of the movement was to help in advancing the Christian's progressive sanctification, and enable one to live a more holy, less sinful, life. Though principally Evangelical, the movement was seen as non-denominational. Together with William Boardman, two other key figures helping to spread the holiness message in England were Robert Pearsall Smith and his wife, Hannah (the central standing figure in the composition), both of whom were acquainted with the Mount-Temples and were involved in the conferences at Broadlands.Edward Clifford was well placed to paint the picture. He had a strong faith, was honorary Secretary of the Evangelical Church Army (the first owners of the picture) and attended the conferences. He was a gifted artist and alongside Robert Bateman, Walter Crane and others, was part of a group of followers of, the Pre-Raphaelite painter, Edward Coley Burne-Jones and exhibited at the Dudley Gallery in the late 1860s and 1870s. Clifford's works often took passages from the Bible as its subject and according to Angela Thirkell, Burne-Jones's granddaughter `He had a peculiar gift for copying his paintings so that my grandfather himself could hardly tell the difference.' He also produced fine pencil portraits, a talent he used to much effect in the present work. Clifford has helpfully named many of the sitters and they reflect the social and geographical diversity of those that attended the various Broadlands conferences. The most notable includes several members of the Wilberforce and Gurney families including Canon Basil Wilberforce, the Church of England Bishop, and Emilia Gurney, the feminist reformer, suffragist, and abolitionist. Amanda Berry Smith is also included, and she spoke at the conference in 1879. She was born into slavery in Maryland and joined the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Rev. H.B. Macartney vividly recorded his attendance at one of the conferences in his book England, Home and Beauty, 1878, p.73-90. A reprinted copy is included with this lot. The figures are identified, left to right:1 - The Hon Ion Keith Falconer (1856-1887), 2- The Reverend Barton Brown, 3 - Mrs Sumner, 4 - Boyd Carpenter, Bishop of Ripon (1841-1918), 5 - The Rev Evan Hopkins (1837-1918), 6- Mrs Wilberforce (Caroline Charlotte Jane Langford,1840-1909), 7- Rev Charles Armstrong Fox, (1836-1900), 8- Rev R Corbett, 9- Edward Clifford (1844-1907) Artist and Hon Secretary of the Church Army, 10 - Vernon Bayley (Perhaps the gardener at Broadlands), 11 - Stanley P Smith, 12 - Lt Herbert Wilberforce, (see 6 and 32 for his mother and father), 13- Mrs Charles, 14 - Sir Stevenson Arthur Blackwood (1823-1893), 15 - The Rev William Hay Macdowall Hunter Aitken (1841-1927), 16 - Lady Ashburton 1844-1930 (The Hon. Betty Joel (1894-1985), a Token Works walnut side cabinet, 1935,with two drawers above a pair of cupboard doors with adjustable shelves within, tiered rounded shelves to one end, token works label to rear 81.5 x 137 x 42cmFootnote: Despite the unfortunate brevity of her career - active only between 1927 and 1938 - the enormous design legacy left by British furniture, textile and interior designer, Betty Joel, is testament to both her talent and her fearlessness. Born Mary Stewart Lockhart in Hong Kong in 1896 to art collector and British colonial officer, Sir James Haldane Stewart Lockhart, and his wife, Edith, Joel spent her childhood and early twenties in China. Betty, as she was known from a young age, met her future husband, David Joel, in Ceylon and shortly after World War I, the pair left the East to settle in Portsmouth. In 1921, despairing at having to adapt old furniture to suit the requirements of her modern home, Betty decided, despite her lack of any formal training, to establish her own design business with her husband. Trading under 'Betty Joel Ltd.', Betty’s early designs were informed by the expertise of local artisans and typically used teak or oak in their manufacture. The popularity of these early designs, which were known as “token furniture” and were retailed through the Joel’s shops in London, secured Betty’s reputation as a serious designer and earned a number of prestigious commissions from clients, including Sir Winston Churchill and Lord and Lady Mountbatten. In 1939, however, David and Betty divorced, and whilst the business would continue to operate under 'David Joel Ltd.', Betty retired and would not work again. Creating her own brand of Modernism, tempered by the restrained aesthetics of the East, Betty’s designs can be characterised by their curvilinear forms, traditional construction methods, and exotic wood veneers.
