Barrie writes to his correspondent regarding a fancy dress and informs Calthrop that a lady has written to him 'wanting to add a touch' by 'carrying a banner with the four lines I told you of on it and wearing a domino - for the early part of the evening'. Barrie further states that he has 'some twenty quotations & cryptic utterances' to put on the dress which vary in length between 10 and 30 words and adds that the longer ones should be conspicuous on the bodies, suggesting one on the front and one on the back, and that all should be easily readable. The novelist further adds a small illustration in his hand of several sheets of parchment intended to have writing on them which he provides as a suggestion to Calthrop before concluding 'It is so good of you'. With blank integral leaf. Together with Hilda Trevelyan (1880-1959) English Actress associated with the plays of J. M. Barrie and famous for creating the role of Wendy in Peter Pan.  LIVINGSTONE DAVID: (1813-1873) Scottish Missionary & Explorer of Africa. A fine A.L.S., David Livingstone, four pages, 8vo, Hamilton, 25th December 1857, to [Thomas Horsfall] 'My Dear Sir'. Livingstone informs his correspondent 'It having been decided that Mr. M. Laird should build a steam launch no farther action on my part is necessary except in the way of thanking you for the trouble you took in the affair' and continues to refer to Lady Chetwynd's £10 which Livingstone thinks 'might be laid out in the purchase of surgical instruments which would answer the end intended by her Ladyship'. He continues 'What is called a “surgical dressing case” and dentist case might be had for the money and if any were over other surgical instruments might be added. I have the impression that the instruments required by an assistant surgeon of the navy or army cost about that sum & would suit my practice well' and asks for his gratitude to be expressed to Lady Chetwynd. In concluding Livingstone writes 'If as is probable we shall sail from Liverpool I shall need a little accommodation for my luggage. Is there any room to be got to which I could send it from time to time. I am here for a week & will return to London after New Years day'. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG   Thomas Berry Horsfall (1805-1878) British Politician, Member of Parliament for Derby 1852 and for Liverpool 1853-65. Lord Mayor of Liverpool 1847-48.    Macgregor Laird (1808-1861) Scottish Merchant, a pioneer of British trade on the River Niger. In 1854, with the support of the British Government, Laird had begun annual trading trips to Africa with steamboats specially built for navigation of the Niger and other rivers.   Livingstone's letter is written shortly ahead of his Second Zambesi expedition which lasted from March 1858 until 1868. In collaboration with the Royal Geographical Society, Livingstone commanded the expedition to explore Southeast Africa for mineral deposits and other natural resources. It led to the establishment of the Central Africa Mission.

Total Extravagance!: A Fine and Elaborately Gilded and Silvered, Carved and Pierced Ivory Fan. circa 1780's, the monture has a wealth of features, many picked out in gold, many more subtle. The guards are elaborately carved and gilded, the monture serving as a playground for numerous gilded cherubs who climb up and down and perch on the delicately pierced gorge sticks, themselves a marvel of intricate carving and piercing in numerous fine designs. The double silk leaf is no less of a designer's triumph, with a trompe l'oeil border encircling three vignettes, containing sequins of different forms in gold, lime green and cerise. The central scene is finely and colourfully painted with a wealthy couple with their young son inside a park, the couple seated on a bench, the child chasing a white dove. The lady is sumptuously dressed in lilac, her wide skirts probably supported with paniered petticoats, her tiny waist drawn in with corsets, a large hat with several drooping plumes, her sleeves and fischu, edged with lace. The gentleman is equally richly attired, with a blue jacket and double breasted striped waistcoat, and yellow breeches, his wig with trailing pigtail, his arms around his lady as she leans towards two white doves which she retains on a leash. The child is dressed in a red suit with short jacket and matching breeches, a large straw hat with plumes balancing on his curls. The side vignettes feature a basket overflowing with recently gathered flowers, and a musical score and stringed instrument. The reserves are painted with flowers and gold highlights and feature more sequin decoration. The verso is painted with deep autumn coloured leaves and three sprays of pink roses and green leaves, coinciding with the reverse of the three vignettes on the recto. Guard length 28cm. Together with an attractive fan box made from two tones of wood, the lighter tone used for entwined initials and flowersRestoration to many folds on the verso. Possible repair to one guard.

Lot 68

Hommage to Cupid: A Mid to Late 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture carved and pierced, silvered and gilded. The gorge sticks feature gilded figures, the remaining sticks being very finely carved and pierced with roundels and lengths of chain. The double silk leaf is almost completely consumed by three painted cartouches, with simple flowers and musical instruments in the reserves. Centrally, the altar of love, being visited by two young couples and another lady who is kneeling to adorn the stone with looped garlands of flowers. To the left, a finely dressed couple supply more garlands, to the right are the young hopefuls, the lady dressed in green clutching the hand of her beau, he in a burnt orange suit and cream embroidered waistcoat, reaching towards Cupid who appears to be proffering a garland of his own. The cartouche is elaborately bordered in rows and chains of gold sequins, as are the two further vignettes to each side. To the left, a young lady in lilac appears to be gathering flowers, whilst the young man in blue with a vibrant yellow waistcoat is holding a flower garland in his hand. Centrally, to the top of the leaf, is a dark blue painted oval within which are entwined initials in gold. To which couple might they belong? The verso is plain. Guard length 28cmSome rubbing to the folds, some light staining to the verso. Slight discoloration to the ivory.

Rare Balloon Observers Escape Trousers, a highly unusual piece of aviation equipment being what is in effect a pair of field grey heavily corded ¾ length shorts to which is affixed a canvas and rope harness with lovely old German script label attached by string, which reads ‘fliegerhose’. Unfortunately Michael Baldwin passed away before he could complete his own description for Feldzug 18 of the exact designation of this rare piece of equipment, however we can only assume they are a form of an escape equipment for a fixed balloon whereby a rope would be secured inside the basket and to the large metallic clip on the harness where if the balloon was hit the observer was able to jump before the balloon completely deflated. One other theory is they could have been worn by aviators with an early rudimentary parachute affixed to the harness, the trousers are constructed in the identical cloth as a full size WW1 German flying suit shown in “German” Arms by  Krause. Featured on pages 126,127,128 and 129 of Feldzug 18.

Born George Sinclair Gould on the 15th April 1915, to his mother Guinevere Sinclair. His maternal grandfather being Sir Edward Sinclair, Provost of Trinity College. A Gaiety Girl appearing in 'The Girl on the Film' , when the son of the then worlds richest man Jay Gould USA fell for her. 5'.6" tall with a tremendous figure and attractive looks, he rushed backstage to meet her. Armed with flowers and a desire for her that was unstoppable, the romance began. Soon she was living in his townhouse on 74th Street, or at a 'Tudor Mansion' at Rye on the New York Coast. Another well known meeting place was on his moored yacht. It was not long before his then wife Edith, was told of the affair. Having lost her figure due to a strong liking for candy, she set about to lose some weight and win him back. A year after George was born, a sister Jane was born to himself and Guinevere. this to mutterings 'Another of Georges Bastards has been born'. Edith's attempts to lose weight knew no bounds, including Steam Baths, Golf every day on their private 9 hole course, also massages. One Sunday in November 1921, whilst playing golf with her husband she collapsed whilst teeing off on the 5th green. She made no sound as she fell and despite attempts to revive her including carrying her to the Casino for help. After some 20 minutes she was pronounced dead . Doctors pronounced her dead of a heart attack, beneath her clothing she was encased in a rubber suit. Described as being wrapped like a mummy. George now turned to Guinevere more than ever, they married in May of 1922 at Lakewood. Gossip followed them so they moved to first England, later to Scotland. They leased Castle Grant from the Earl of Seafield, fishing, shooting and playing golf. Within the year the holiday in France ended in tragedy, when George contracted and died of Pneumonia. His estate was originally set at $30 million dollars. He left his wishes for it to be split equally between his ten children. After a while his estate was set at $15 million dollars. It was further reduced to $5 million dollars. Soon the siblings were fighting for what was left. Law suits stating George and his two sisters were born out of wedlock, took their toll on the will of their Grandfather Jay Gould. Once considered the worlds richest man, law suits took their toll. Actions ran over four years, costing the then record $2.7 million dollars. After the settlement where they had reduced shares, Guinevere married the Viscount Dunsford, heir to the 1st Earl of Midleton, after his divorce from his wife Peggy. They moved to England and brought Eastwell Park in Kent, filling it with antiques and paintings. It was then decided George and his sisters, should take the name Brodrick (Midleton). George was entered into Eton where after arriving he excelled at most sports, filling the Mr Butterwicks House dining room sideboard with trophies. Described by Peter Carrington later Foreign Secretary, as an 'extraordinarily nice person, our No1 hero.' He later attended Trinity College Cambridge, arriving in a chauffeur driven new Bentley 4.2.litre sports. He payed an young gentleman to attend all the lectures, then provide him with comprehensive notes prior to his finals. He sailed through them! After graduating he joined the Irish Guards, serving in Egypt from late 1937. It was here he was commended for 'Gallant and distinguished conduct in operations against armed insurgents.
