One of just 369 right-hand drive Silver Seraphs produced and a member of the Edwards Collection since 2005.This Collection is offered by the family of the late J. Anthony Edwards whose passion for Rolls-Royce and Bentley motorcars spanned decades. With business success in his thirties, Tony as he was universally known, bought a Bentley S1 that started his enthusiasm that led to owning virtually every subsequent model of Rolls and Bentley since. Tony even passed his advanced driving test in a 1996 Bentley Brooklands at the age of 75! At the age of 80 his passion was still undiminished when he exchanged a Phantom Coupé for a new Wraith. The cars that Tony loved to drive remained in the collection, some retained by the family, and these four cars are a testament to his diligent maintenance, each on the button, for the next custodian to enjoy as he did. When the Silver Seraph was launched in 1998, the most significant break with tradition was, of course, the adoption of BMW engines, the Seraph's power unit being the 5.3-litre, 60-degree V12 of the range-topping 750i, its engine management system appropriately reconfigured for the heavier Rolls-Royce. The ZF 5-speed automatic gearbox is likewise sourced from the 750i, and once again its electronics, which control shift points, are re-programmed to suit the different application. Whilst many flag-waving traditionalists were outraged, the buyers did not complain for the new Rolls-Royce offered the same level of build quality but with new, and reliable electronics and progressive power delivery from the silky smooth V12 engine. Bearing a strong resemblance to Bentley’s Arnage, which were mass produced by comparison, the Silver Seraph ceased production in 2002 with just 369 cars built in right-hand drive.Supplied new to the UK on 21st May 2001, the silver paintwork compliments the cream leather and rich Burr Walnut veneers nicely. With some 20,000 miles on the car it was bought by Tony on 24th March 2003 and he enjoyed driving it, as evidenced by the current mileage of 48,425 miles. Presented to auction with service records, V5C and an advisory free MOT valid until 18th October 2023. We conclude that the Silver Seraph remains popular in the collector car market as do all limited production motorcars and it retains the historic link with the Silver Shadow that saved Rolls-Royce back in the 1960s, as a Rolls that is owner-driver focused whilst boasting rear passenger comforts unparalleled by its contemporaries.SpecificationMake: ROLLS ROYCEModel: SILVER SERAPHYear: 2001Chassis Number: SCALA62E41CH06324Registration Number: Y504 GFMTransmission: AutomaticEngine Number: 61132466799963 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 48422 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Cream LeatherClick here for more details and images

Lot 742

Car 459 of a limited edition of 1,000 marking the end of production of VW South Africa's version of the iconic Golf Mk1 in 2009, UK registered and just 16,598km.When Volkswagen released the original Golf in 1974, the car was an overnight success. Easy, economical to drive and inexpensive to maintain. Volkswagen South Africa started the assembly of the Golf Mk1 under licence in 1978, however, when the second generation Golf arrived in 1984, Volkswagen South Africa found themselves unable to supply the demand for a small, affordable entry-level car, as the Mk2 was bigger and somewhat more expensive than its predecessor. The most viable option for VW SA was to continue producing a variant of the Mk1, designed to fill the gap in the market for a reliable, solid, safe car for the local population. Using the same body shell as the Mk1, the 'Citi Golf' was launched in 1984 as a mildly facelifted,1.6-litre, five-door, alongside companion saloon and two-door utility models. The Citi Golf's 25 year lifespan saw hundreds of modifications, both cosmetic, to satisfy consumer demand, and mechanical to comply with safety and emission standards. Cost savings from using the Mk1 shell allowed the Citi to be better appointed than its rivals, with accessories made available over the years from the Volkswagen Group parts department. To commemorate the end of production of the Citi in 2009, the Citi Mk1 was launched. This edition was limited to just 1,000 cars, with special features that included lowered suspension, 15” alloy wheels, tinted windows, a leather sports steering wheel with airbag, and chrome foil side-stripes. The lovely example on offer here is Number 459 of those 1,000 cars and is finished in Black Magic Pearl, one of two colours available, and optioned with half-leather seats trimmed with black cloth. It was imported into the UK and registered with the DVLA on the 1st October 2019 as 'YL09 OZK, however, our vendor thought that particular registration did not quite suit the little Citi, so it now wears the current private registration, RRZ 9617, which will remain with the car.Presented to auction in exceptional condition with just 16,598 kilometres or 10,313 miles at the time of cataloguing, the service book states that the most recent service was carried out less than 435 km ago 22nd September 2021 and the car has just been issued with an advisory free MOT. An official book commemorating the Citi, unused mats still in their Volkswagen packaging, VWSA brochures, main dealer service receipts, VW heritage letter, original radio and bill of sale accompany the car.Whilst the car’s condition and rarity warrants a place in a collection, it is also eminently suitable as a daily driver for the enthusiast that loves the retro looks of a classic car but appreciates the modern enhancements fitted by the manufacturer from new. It sits within its own niche in the market and elements of the car’s features may seem incongruous at first glance but make perfect sense in context, however, you'll probably never see another and despite its humble origins, its sheer rarity means it would be welcome anywhere.SpecificationMake: VWModel: GOLFYear: 2009Chassis Number: AAVZZZ17Z9U015442Registration Number: RRZ 9617Transmission: ManualEngine Number: AFX088681 Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 10313 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Leather/ClothClick here for more details and images

A very good example of the desirable Series 1 that's covered just 41,123 miles from new.The much-revered Escort RS Turbo S1 was supplied in the distinctive Diamond White' body colour only. The engine utilised was a 1600 CVH unit modified to suit the higher loads and the application of a turbocharger, whilst also benefitted from computerised fuel injection and engine management incorporating boost control, producing a healthy 132bhp. It was the first front-wheel drive road car in the world to use a compact viscous-coupling design LSD instead of a normal mechanical LSD, which greatly improved cornering and drivability.Aesthetically, the RS Turbo was given a distinctive sporty appearance with a body-coloured front grill, bumpers and aerodynamic aids. The interior was trimmed in a combination of Monza and Cashmere fabrics and Recaro LS bucket seats were fitted as standard. Production was limited to only 5,000 examples and many were modified in period for racing and/or crashed. On offer here is a UK-supplied, right-hand drive example that indicated just 41,123 miles on the odometer at the time of cataloguing. ‘C558 JEP’ is a very well-known car amongst the RS Turbo scene and is accompanied by a really interesting history. There is simply way too much information to list here so we encourage interested parties to come and see this cracking S1 in the metal and spend time going through the file to fully understand its genuine story. Our vendor, who is lucky enough to own a significant collection of special Performance Fords, sought-out this particular car for his collection and is proud to have owned it. Coming to auction in fabulous condition, this special car is offered with a competitive estimate considering the low mileage and momentum behind recent sales of the RS Turbo S1.SpecificationMake: FORDModel: RSYear: 1986Chassis Number: WF0BXXGCABFE15970Registration Number: C558 JEPTransmission: ManualDrive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images

Lot 723

Bought from Spike Milligan by Peter Sellers in 1968 and cherished until his death in 1980. Restored as a personal project by RS Williams for £45,000 in 2015.The Austin Motor Car Company launched the Twelve in 1921 and it proved to be hugely popular thanks to superior build quality across a range of models and an engine quoted as capable of delivering some 40mph, tested, perhaps, on a steep gradient. Produced in 1930 this Austin Heavy Twelve Open Road Tourer Deluxe was bought by comedian Spike Milligan in the 1950s and affectionately nicknamed “Old Min”, inspired by the elderly spinster Minnie Bannister, a character from 'The Goon Show'. The car seemed to suit Spike’s appearance and personality but the car was to be coveted by another member of the Goons, the suave playboy of the group, Peter Sellers. The George Best of comedy and rarely seen without an attractive woman on his arm, Sellers famously owned some special Ferraris, naturally the latest Rolls-Royce and many Aston Martins, but “Old Min” had him under her spell.By this time Sellers had met the world-renowned Aston Martin specialist Richard Williams, who took on the role of the actor's 'fleet manager'. Having enjoyed the Austin for 11 years, Sellers gave 'Old Min' back to Milligan only to retrieve the car almost immediately as he felt his friend was failing to care for it properly. The car's history following Sellers' death in 1980 is not clear, but Richard Williams later became acquainted with one of the subsequent owners and was able to purchase 'Old Min' in March 2010.In 2012, Richard commenced a total restoration to Sellers' famously exacting standards, a long and painstaking process that would take the next three years to complete. The original hood was retained; the upholstery sympathetically refurbished; and the engine rebuilt by Vintage-era Austin specialist, Bob James. Richard spent over £45,000 on the restoration and his detailed summary of the costs may be found in the extensive history file together with old photographs, various invoices, magazine articles, and an original handbook inscribed 'Property of Spike Milligan – please return'. Used sparingly since the restoration the car was bought from the Richard Williams estate in May 2021 by our enthusiast vendor for family jaunts and is now offered to the next custodian.Shortly after the restoration’s completion, "Old Min" was road-tested by Andrew Roberts for an article in Classic & Sports Car magazine (March 2016 edition, copy on file) in which he succinctly sums up its unique charm. "This test possibly means more to me than almost any other I've done for C&SC," he declared. "In my day job as a film historian, I genuinely regard Peter Sellers, at the height of his powers, to have been the finest actor in post-war British cinema, and so the experience of riding in Old Min was on a par with another motoring scribe driving the former property of Graham Hill or Jim Clark."Photographs credited to Simon Clay.Period photographs part of the Lot.SpecificationMake: AUSTINModel: OLD MIN - HEAVY 12/4 CLIFTON OPEN ROAD TOURER DELUXYear: 1930Chassis Number: 68282Registration Number: GO 3252Transmission: ManualEngine Number: 68937L Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 10000 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Dark RedClick here for more details and images

Lot 630

A mid-mounted V6, an outrageous colour, quirky styling and made in small numbers, this fabulously French pocket rocket is a gorgeous creation that thankfully slipped through the net of sensibility.Once dubbed 'the World's smallest supercar' by Evo Magazine, the Renaultsport Clio V6 255 remains a motoring oddity if there ever was one. Renault took a big, Laguna derived 3-litre V6 engine producing 255bhp and 221lb/ft torque, dropped it in the middle of the short Clio chassis, hooked up a rear-wheel drive system and mated it to a 6-speed manual transmission. If that wasn’t enough, it looks like they then injected styling steroids into the bodywork to give it that wide, aggressive stance and put it out to the world in 2001, with the Phase 2 being revealed as an even sharper variant in 2003.Early models had a reputation for spikiness on the limit, but the car became more refined with time and later V6s managed to be both usable and better to drive than earlier models. Both guises (230 Phase 1 and 255 Phase 2) stand out on the road with levels of charm achieved by few other cars - and rising prices suggest the market didn’t take long to catch on to their value as drivers' cars. At the time of its release, the Phase 2 was the most powerful hot hatch ever made.Only 1,309 Clio V6 255 Phase 2s were built for the global market with only 21 of them being specified in Acid Yellow, with eight of those 21 making their way to the UK. It is an undeniably early 2000s look with the bold colour scheme, but with such a bonkers car it seems to suit it and make sense.A Phase 2 Clio V6 is a rare car at the best of times, but to be one of just eight cars ever to come to the UK in this colour combination stands it above the rest, especially considering its covered just 13,250 miles at time of consignment in the hands of its four previous keepers. For a car that’s moved so little, the history file is meticulous including lots of invoices for work and maintenance undertaken, most recently in March 2021 when it received a new cambelt, pulley kit and water pump, fitted by East Bilney Garage at a cost of £1,348. There is also the Renault embossed leather folder and service book accompanying the various invoices. Presenting in very good condition, representative of the low mileage, the paintwork presents well, as does the interior showing it has been looked after and cherished from day one.Once described by Evo Magazine as one of the greatest cars Renault have ever offered, the Clio V6 is very quickly (and deservedly) achieving cult status and must be worthy of a slot in any serious collection. With its stunning colours, low mileage, and quintessentially French design, and signed by the Clio V6's designer, perfectly encapsulating the essence of modern mid-engined motoring 21 years ago, will no doubt make this a classic in the future.SpecificationMake: RENAULTModel: CLIO V6 255 PHASE 2Year: 2004Chassis Number: VF1C61U0631733896Registration Number: V6 YEHTransmission: ManualEngine Number: F167937Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 13250 MilesMake: RHDClick here for more details and images

FORSTER (E.M) – GEORGE PLATT LYNESGroup of three portrait photographs of E.M. Forster, shown standing full-length or seated on a wooden bench, formally dressed in a pin-stripe suit and tie, two dated on reverse by Forster ('1947' and '1947 with Bob' [the last two words deleted]), another with inscription in black ink ('Taken on the first trip/ much love/ Lincoln [Kirstein] & Fidelma [Cadmus]/ 1971. January'), gelatin silver prints, photographer's '145 East 52 Street New York' stamp on reverse, 230 x 190mm., [1949]Footnotes:'LIKE AN ACTOR WAITING IN THE WINGS': PORTRAITS OF FORSTER BY THE RENOWNED NEW YORK PHOTOGRAPHER GEORGE PLATT LYNES. Forster (and indeed Lincoln Kirstein) has erroneously dated these photographs to his first trip to New York and Washington from April to July 1947. However, other photographs from the same sitting depict him with Bob Buckingham, who accompanied him on a brief trip to New York in May 1949, and was not with him on the earlier occasion. They were taken on the afternoon of 1 June 1949 in the austere setting of George Platt Lynes' studio and have been seen an important moment in the recording of gay relationships (see Wendy Moffat, 'Queer Patrimony: George Platt Lynes's Portraits of E.M. Forster', The Yale University Library Gazette, Vol.82, no.3/4, April 2008, pp.123-140). 'In these dramatic beautifully lit photographs' she writes, 'Lynes manages to make both his subjects their most glamorous selves, and their essential selves... Though notoriously shy, Forster was made comfortable both by Lynes' self-effacing working method, and by Lynes' bona fides as a lover and close friend of several of Forster's closest American friends... Lynes' physical beauty and his extraordinary charm disarmed many of his photographic subjects... His studio embodied a stylized artificiality... famous for his theatrical lighting arrangements and innovative fashion photography' (Moffat, p.129-134). In our photograph, Forster stands at the edge of the composition, the only photograph from the session in which Forster looks directly at the camera. Moffat believes that it was taken surreptitiously, and that Forster did not see a print of it – something which may be borne out by the fact it was presented to Furbank after Forster's death by the impresario and philanthropist Lincoln Kirstein and is not annotated by Forster: '...alone, resolute... It captures his owlishness and his vulnerability... The Lynes portrait of Forster – shown to the fewest people – goes the furthest in capturing Forster's queerness' (Moffat, p.136). Towards the end of his life, Lynes sold it with a batch of his most explicit homoerotic nudes to the sexologist Alfred Kinsey for research purposes. The present trio of photographs derive from the collection of Forster's biographer, P.N. Furbank, the standing photograph published in Wendy Moffat, E.M. Forster: A New Life, London, 2010. Provenance: P.N. ('Nick') Furbank (1920-2014); his friend and executor Dr W.R. Owens, the present owner (see adjacent lots). For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

His height was recorded as 45cms (19.5in) and came first to the Queen’s notice when he was served up in a pie wearing a miniature suit of armour. Known as the 'Queen’s dwarf' and 'Lord Minimus', he was considered one of the wonders of the age. He was painted by Van Dyck standing with the Queen, her pet capuchin monkey, 'Pug', on his arm.Condition ReportTrousers with wear and discolouration. Braid to the hem has come unstitched. The waistband tie has come apart at back. Case in generally good condition but with large water stain to the front. Paper label inside rubbednotes from the vendor:They were sold in the Eila Grahame auction, at Cheffins, a few years ago, where Jan fell in love with them! apart from the old card, attached to the trousers, which is perfectly genuine, there was no further information about where Eila had bought them from, they too were certainly one of the pieces Eila had kept at home, I never remember seeing them in her shop, she bought so much, and handled so much through her gallery in London, often she forgot about the paperwork! However, a charming royal memento, beautifully made, and showing signs that ’they’ were worn and used, rather than being just a ‘template’ / facsimile These too were bought for stock, but somehow ended up staying with Jan in her office!
