Believed Rickman / Triumph 490cc Daytona ProjectRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. R001350Engine no. T100R H55952This incomplete machine was purchased as a basic project, the vendor being informed by the seller that he believed the frame to be a Rickman. The owner found that the engine mountings were to suit a unit Triumph motor, and he subsequently purchased a Daytona engine to go into it. Alloy oil and petrol tanks are fitted. He lifted the cylinder head and saw nothing amiss, so went no further into the motor, which needed timing gears and a clutch, both of which he found. The rear wheel is a Rickman type, and the front a Ducati type, with a newly-cast brakeplate. The vendor intended to use the machine for sprints and hillclimbs, but is now retired from competition, rendering it surplus to requirements. Prospective buyers should satisfy themselves as to the suitability and compatibility of its component parts. It will require further work or restoration, and safety checks prior to any use. There is no documentation with this lot, which includes some spares.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 387

Property of a deceased's estate 1955 BSA 499cc Gold StarRegistration no. VKO 806Frame no. CB32 1971Engine no. DB.34 GS505The Gold Star did not return to BSA's post-WW2 range until 1949. First displayed at the Earls Court Show in 1948, the B32 Goldie boasted the telescopic front fork first introduced for 1946 and came equipped with a new alloy cylinder barrel and 'head. For 1950 a 500cc version – the B34 – was added to the range and this larger Goldie was the first to switch to the new die-cast top-end, with separate rocker box, in 1951. The 350 followed suit in 1952 and the pair continued as the 'BB' Gold Stars after the new swinging-arm frame was introduced in 1953, changing to 'CB' designation for 1954. This change marked the introduction of the classic 'big fin' engine, but the designation lasted only until the arrival of the 'DB' series in the autumn of 1955. The 'DB' incorporated a much-improved lubrication system and, in the case of the 350 only, a stronger cylinder assembly; as such it would represent the 'Junior' Goldie in its final form.Registered to the late owner on 16th February 1992, this nicely presented example would respond well to detailing and re-commissioning after a period of inactivity (the engine turns over with good compression). The machine is offered with old/current V5C documents; SORN paperwork; some marque-related literature; and a quantity of MoTs (most recent expired in 2012).Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness, and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot No: 50 - Ref No: 040 Space Otter By Sally Ley I am 25 years old and have a Masters in Forensic Psychology. I believe that education has been a major driving force in my life as I think it is extremely important to understand the world and have a natural curiosity and a love for learning. I chose to depict the otter as an astronaut to pay homage to the 50th anniversary of the moon landings which inspired many generations to be curious of space exploration, the world around us and the capabilities of humans. The spacesuit on the otter is reminiscent of Tim Peake's suit when he launched into space in December 2015. Tim Peake has done a great deal to inspire the British public and reinvigorate our curiosity around STEM subjects and space travel. The small otter represents the younger generation being inspired by Tim Peake and space exploration.

Lot No: 52 - Ref No: 042 Women in Water By Megan Hall Flotsam Prints ''Women in Water is inspired by my wild swimming adventures across Dartmoor National Park. I've been swimming outdoors throughout all seasons since November 2018 and have met many incredible and inspiring women along the way. This design is an homage to them all. All bar one of the women's swimsuits are connected to nature in some way whether they are depicting the moon and stars, sunshine and rain or florals and leaves. The odd one out is a polka dot bikini which is a nod to vintage bathing suit designs. My hope is Women in Water will inspire more people to take a dip outside this summer and reconnect with nature in a way they may not have since childhood.''

Although Sykes enjoyed a distinguished career in the early days of British military aviation, his character did not appeal to either Lord Kitchener or Winston Churchill and he was temporarily demoted, in 1914 and 1919, on the orders of both men. Sykes married Isabel Law (1895-1969), elder daughter of the prime minister Andrew Bonar Law (1858-1923), in 1920. By 1911 it was clear that the development of aircraft had reached the point where they were of military significance. France, then the world’s leader in aviation, had over 200 aircraft in military service. In contrast, Britain’s total military aircraft strength was 19, of which, in the words of the then Under-Secretary of State for War, “one is broken beyond repair and one is quite out of date.” So, on behalf of the Air Battalion, Royal Engineers, the War Office convened to conduct a review of military flying in December 1911 and announced that a military aircraft trial would take place during 1912. The aim was to determine what aircraft would best suit the needs of the Army, and a prize of £4,000 was on offer to the manufacturer of the winning machine. By the time the trials were held, at Larkhill on Salisbury Plain in August 1912, the Air Battalion had become the military wing of the newly-established Royal Flying Corps (RFC). The trials were to be very exacting to the point of being unrealistic, considering the rudimentary character of early aeroplanes. Testing the aircraft’s performance in a number of competences, the War Office reserved the right to then purchase any machine for £1,000. The tests would include an aircraft’s ability to carry a load of 350lbs for 4½ hours, attain a speed of 55mph, take off from long grass, clover or harrowed land in 100 yards without damage and climb to 1,000 feet at a rate of at least 200 feet per minute, and finally land on rough ground, including ploughed land and stopping within 75 yards. A total of 32 aircraft were entered, although only 24 participated in the competition. Flying began on 2 August 1912 and continued for three weeks. The surprise winner was Samuel Cody’s biplane, popularly known as the ‘flying cathedral’ due to its size. It was an outdated design even in 1912, but managed to meet all the test criteria largely due to its very powerful 20hp Austro-Daimler 6-cylinder engine. The RFC felt compelled to purchase the machine, and took delivery of its first aircraft in November 1912; a second aircraft was delivered in February 1913. In April of that year, after some modifications, the first aircraft broke up at 500 feet and crashed to the ground at Farnborough, killing its pilot. The second aircraft was at this time undergoing repair following an accident in March; it was withdrawn from service and presented to the Science Museum in November 1913, having only flown for 2½ hours. The most successful aircraft to fly at the competition was the Royal Aircraft Factory’s BE 2, designed by Geoffrey de Havilland. Although it participated in all the trials it was unable to compete because of a conflict of interest, as the Superintendent of the Royal Aircraft Factory, Meryyn O’Gorman, was one of the judges. The BE 2 however was eventually ordered in large numbers by the RFC and saw operational service during the early part of the First World War, as well as continuing to be used as a training aircraft throughout the conflict. Sold with further detail and a newspaper cutting celebrating the centenary of the event, featuring an image of Samuel Cody
