An important collection of note and sketch books belonging to the archaeologist and author Hodder Michael Westropp (b.1820 County Cork, Ireland, - 1884). Educated at Trinity College, Dublin. Hodder M Westropp wrote what is probably the first handbook of archaeology ever produced, added to Petrie's work on Irish Round Towers and defined the term Mesolithic*. Fourteen note/sketch books, these mostly black morocco bound, filled with pencil notes and sketches in Hodder Westropp's hand, largely of an academic nature covering archaeology, gems, comparative religion etc..., it seems probable that the notes and sketches included material used in his many publications and lectures.**, together with a hand-written volume "Gems and Precious Stones in the Collection of Hodder M Westropp", a 62 page gilt tooled black morocco bound notebook inscribed to single side only, and a scrap album containing printed lecture promotional papers et al. (qty) *Nicholson, Paul Thomas, 1983, Hodder Westropp, a nineteenth century archaeologist, Antiquity 58, pp. 205-210. ** Publications include: Westropp (Hodder Michael), Handbook of archaeology, Egyptian-Greek-Etruscan-Roman, Bell and Daldy, 1867: A Manual of Precious Stones and Antique Gems, Sampson Low et al, 1874: On the Fanaux de Cimitieres in France, and the Round Towers in Ireland, Hodges, Smith & Co, 1865: Primitive Symbolism, as Illustrated in Phallic Worship or the Reproductive Principle, G.Redway, 1885. Viewing by appointment recommended. Further images added.
A very scarce Anglo-Egyptian War souvenir handkerchief, dating from circa 1882. Monochrome printed onto cotton, showing a map of Egypt, specifically Alexandria when under British bombardment from the Royal Navy. Several British warships are illustrated off the coast, such as H.M.S. Alexandra, H.M.S. Sultan, and H.M.S.Inflexible. In the right hand margin of the handkerchief there appears to be a small pencil sketch of a hot air balloon drawn directly onto the fabric. Approximately 55.5cm x 55.5cm. Condition: generally very good. It’s possible that the item may have been a ‘second’ on account of the fact that the printing is slightly disrupted by a fault to the weave of the cotton across the word ‘Alexandria’. The cotton has yellowed a little with age, but it is free from large holes or other kinds of damage. It appears to have been tacked on to a wall in the past, as evidenced by several small pinholes along the top edge.
